A strained relationship at times too but donald trump ending up talking to reporters describing her as a great friend so despite some of the hostilities particular on the part of the u. S. President in advance of these meetings all smiles in front of the cameras so far well all sounds sort of fun kimberly but there is a meeting that everyones going to be watching this afternoon i believe and set to be with them russian president pierson. Yeah youre absolutely right that meeting with the u. S. President donald trump and the russian president Vladimir Putin is really looming over todays events that should be happening in roughly 3 hours time if they would stay on schedule a lot of interest because this is the 1st time that the russian president the u. S. President will be sitting down since the release of the special counsel Robert Mullers investigation into whether or not there was russian interference in the u. S. Election the conclusion absolutely on the heels of multiple intelligence agencies in the United States saying the very same thing there were reporters asked donald trump before he left for osaka if he would be confronting the russian president about this issue he would only say i may and with regard to what they would be discussing its really none of our business while Many Americans think it is their business and they are concerned about the upcoming president ial election and 2020 there are many concerns that donald trump has in the past particularly when they met the 2 leaders in helsinki that he was not aggressive enough in pushing for u. S. Interests we also know these 2 leaders disagree when it comes to a number of issues theyll be discussing iran tensions with venezuela all donald trump would say in advance of this meeting as he talked to reporters is that he expects to have a very good conversation with the russian president of course the American People of the world will really be the judge of that committee how keeping an eye on things for us and i saw thank you for that update kimberly well now lets speak to Mason Ritchie here is a professor of International Relations at one Cook University of foreign studies he joins us now from seoul but weve already heard from president obama little this morning as he headed into his meetings with japan and india he says this talk about including trade but hes also been attacking various members of the g. 20 before even getting on the plane what to hoping to actually get out of the summit. I think that. Trump is going to be interested in playing up the Positive Side of the relationships that the us has with allies and Strategic Partners with japan or whether it be nato or whether that be india. And i think in some ways hes perhaps playing Good Cop Bad Cop with himself hes played bad cop a little bit with japan and india on Security Issues and on trade issues and now hes a little bit theyre playing up the Positive Side of the relationship talking about how close the u. S. Relationship is with with india and japan so i think in some ways hes trying to you know in his own way advance u. S. Interests by pushing allies on the things where he thinks the allies and Strategic Partners arent being very helpful and and trying to reward them in person in the right direction when things are he thinks that they can be helpful to us mason speaking of u. S. Interests President Trump well meet with chinese president xi jinping tomorrow but i understand the chinese have already put together a list of demands and trading lifting the ban on quite a way before a trade deal would be possible. Yeah so chinas going to have a set of things that theyre going to ask for and the u. S. Is going to of course have a set of things that theyre going to ask for and right now i dont think that theres a lot of overlap on some of the core things there are things on the margins where i think that they can they can do something whether that be on the trade deficit whether that be on some of the Technology Transfer related issues but you know trumps you know pushed pretty hard on what way and it really is an issue that the United States thinks is critical Going Forward for u. S. National security interests and i think right now the u. S. Is not willing to budge will not china doesnt seem to be willing to budge on that either it seems to be weathering a lot of. The pressure from the u. S. In terms of tariffs and i think that right now theres not a lot of room for agree in the immediate future so i think the real effort here is going to be to try to solve a few things on the side where they can build up a little bit of trust and momentum and then come back on the working level and try to solve some of these bigger problems although im not optimistic and mason as weve just had from kennedy today all eyes are likely to be on the meeting between trump and pearson in about 3 hours or so how is that dynamic changed since the last 20. Well the you know one of the major things of course is the report has come out and you know obviously the putin trump relationship has always had that in the background in some ways i think that has. Been taken off the table and. I think will probably feel little bit freer to act with putin as you would not have earlier when the motor report had not been released so i think thats when things are their personal data and dynamic i think will change a little bit because of that and obviously you have the situation in venezuela which you know was not taking place in the same degree during the previous g. 20 so you know clearly thats going to be something where the u. S. Feels like russia hasnt been very helpful and then in the background of the there are some arms deals going on with russia selling 480 across the systems to turkey and to india and i think that the United States is not very happy about that so i think that theyll be some discussions about that as well mason rich a professor of International Relations at hand Cook University foreign studies in cell thanks for joining us on aljazeera now hundreds of iraqis have thrown to the Bahraini Embassy in central baghdad and anger over the u. S. Sponsored nama conference on peace in the middle east bahrain has recalled that some bastard to rock off to demonstrate has broken and took down the flag replacing it with one of their own and police used live rounds to break up the hour long standoff but no one was injured a 50000000000. 00 economic plan was unveiled by white house advisor Jared Kushner in bahrain this week john ging has more from the iraqi capital. Hundreds of angry demonstrators were outside the Bahamian Embassy in baghdad they were there to protest the u. S. Sponsored manami conference in bahrain it was reported also that demonstrators breached the Embassy Compound that they were able to get up on the roof to take down the beheading any flag and also it was reported that they burned israeli flags and u. S. Flags while they were holding that demonstration and it was reported as well that the security guards on the scene guarding the embassy retreated when they saw that wall of angry protesters appear this is all happening at a time when many at the partys Political Parties and politicians have been highly critical of that mama conference when many politicians here have said that this conference is something that is gone beyond saying that its not going to help the palestinians these are off the politicians who said this is actually going to be a hindrance to palestinians being able to establish a palestinian state Going Forward so not really a surprise that this would happen at a time of such heated rhetoric the big question now will there be more protests in the days to come. Well with counting more ahead on this news hour including here there is a Motor Vehicle its completely destroyed by the fighting fire inside the libyan city of katia one back from the forces of warlord Khalifa Haftar by government troops. Report from ethiopia where hundreds of people have been arrested and the wake of a failed verbally and. And how india ended the hopes of the west indies a cricket wild cut pieces will have the force. Now its day 2 and round 2 of the democratic president ial debates and 10 more contenders for the partys nomination currently crossing swords on u. S. Television today is failing to its current from the front runner former Vice President joe biden along with senators Bernie Sanders and come of the harris candidates are expected to address the host of issues from health care and immigration to Foreign Policy 10 of the democratic hopefuls including Elizabeth Warren to part of the festive base on wednesday and our correspondent joins us live now from miami where the debates are currently being house and where an hour into the debate now so whos making impressions so far. From my Vantage Point the california senator Kemal Harrison is doing a pretty stunned job shes just taken on Vice President former Vice President joe biden over his discussions with segregation is something he got in trouble with over the last 2 weeks and it was a very emotional moment Vice President joe biden was almost taken aback by the attack from her and she of course has a lot of experience as a prosecutor shes using that to good effect tonight and of course joe biden is the current front runner in all of this he did have a target on his back coming into this debate tonight but many people watching for Bernie Sanders and joe biden. Clashing they havent done that so far and they are the 2 front runners so senator cmon harris is really standing out of the moment i think joe biden expected that he would be attacked by the candidates given his lead that hes kept so well but she is someone whos at the moment polling in Single Digits may get a big boost from this of course the debates on over yet the other candidates on stage than on so well known on doing as well as the more better known candidates and thats been clear from when these debates started that if you come in here with name recognition if people know who you are you do better but from a sense of cmon horaces as a school at some point tonight shes made some memorable moments that will be important for her campaign Going Forward of course all the candidates the qualifications for them to go forward in these debates will get tougher people will drop out many democratic voters of told me they want this field to go down from 20 something to a more serious field of candidates joe biden has done a fairly decent job no gaffes from him hes known from doing that from time to time he probably expected to come under attack but this was fairly brutal for him so far. And i want to ask you about just under 40 minutes to go and weve already heard that he found his call president trying a phony and a fraud and joe biden said trumps put the country in a horrible situation is there more trump bashing to come. I mean its been its been fairly light so far i think theyre more focusing on their own stories in their own policies i think theres no disagreement among any of these candidates that trump is but its who is best suited to and who is best prepared to take him on that is in voters minds and they got to our correspondent in miami keeping an eye on that debate for thank you for that update. Now back to backs of a side bomb attacks in the chain is in capital of killed a Police Officer and wounded several other people the interior minister is calling for calm and says the attack as i yet to be identified in the reports. A reminder of the news this hour a new release testimony by the former u. S. Secretary of state shows he was kept in the dark over some key areas of Foreign PolicyRex Tillerson accused white house adviser of operating independently and outside of the state department. Donald trump has been meeting with g 20 host chins are all day ahead of the formal start of the summit in japan but just before departing for a stock outright raised questions about the u. S. Japan security alliance. Suggesting its one sided. And another 10 Democratic Candidates are crossing swords on u. S. Television right now as they compete for the partys president ial nomination senate has come a harris Bernie Saunders and former Vice President joe biden are among those taking part in the debate. Well lets take you live now to our sokka and japan where the g. 20 summit of World Leaders is getting underway at the moment greeting the host of a one by one as they line up for the the traditional family 1st growth well lets bring in our diplomatic editor now james bass whos at the summit venue in osaka japan says when so much tension between the u. S. And various of its allies in the lead up to the summit not to mention the ongoing trade war with china and rising tensions with iran as we watch everyone walk in now talk us through what you think of the body language weve been seeing from from leaders this morning. Well this is something theyre very used to coming to a summit like this its mainly very warm smiles you seeing the canadian Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau now each of them meeting shinzo are bad day but behind the scenes there is the tension you talk about none of it really has come in to the open so far as you heard from kim believe the tension comes i think from some of the things that President Trump said on twitter in recent days Prime Minister many of the u. K. Now greeting the japanese Prime Minister lets take a closer look at some of these pictures what youre seeing right now is each of them coming past the host shaking his hand and then well see all of them on the stage together the family photo that is something they always do it these these events its 2 memorial eyes the event show everyone together show the unity of the g. 20 interesting that its not just the g. 20 you have here the g. 20 consists of 19 countries and the European Union so you have the president of the European Commission and the European Council which have 2 european leaders here but they also invite a number of other leaders guests include the netherlands and singapore this year and youll find other leaders who are part of the g. 20 here in a different capacity for example president sisi of egypt is here hes not here because egypt c been invited hes here because currently they are the rotating heads of the arab league so thats why some of these leaders are here with so many leaders in the same place at the same time yes the focus is on politics and economics and particularly the Economic Situation around the world and clearly trade will be top of the agenda in the key dynamic there i think is between the u. S. And china in the possibility of that trade war but remember theres also been tension with other leaders as well the president tried. Tweeting earlier on about indias trade with united with the with the us but there are other issues that will be dealt with in the sidelines of all of this and one of the biggest ones is iran in the last half an hour or so i was with the u. N. Secretary general on toyota terrorist who was giving a News Conference and he said that he was raising the issue of Global Warming but he was also raising the issue of rising political warming and then he went and focused in detail on the situation between the u. S. And iran he said the tension must be reduced its something hes going to be bringing up in some of his meetings here in a soccer as we have now the 2nd of the european leaders donald. President of the European Council to retain the japanese Prime Minister he said that its something that they will be discussing and of course the e. U. Pretty important in regard to iran because he was a key player in that Iran Nuclear Deal signed almost exactly 4 years ago in d. N. R. Were going to see all of these leaders together at the end of this and change them its been a really busy morning for that as well our friends as you know are buying and he is in staking hands now that hes already had a number of different meetings this morning including a trilateral where the president trans and indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi and that was all smiles and nationally but but also some tough issues that they that they potentially discussed behind closed doors. You have potentially tough issues and remember as we see egypts president sisi now that. The there was some criticism from President Trump about the defense treaty between japan and the u. S. Its existed since the 2nd world war since San Francisco that was signed in 1951 so President Trump saying that there was not a reciprocal basis on that treaty and in fact the u. S. Did more than ship for japan the japan did for the United States but on the whole the relations between japan and the u. S. Are warm remember the Prime Minister of a was in the u. S. Straight off to Donald Trumps election he was one of the very 1st people to visit in the transition that many observers believe he played the trumpet administration very very well this is a time of pride for the japanese Prime Minister he is close very close to becoming the longest serving japanese Prime Minister in history and here are years on the world stage greeting the World Leaders one by one and then well see a family photo of all of them now what so watch for when we see that family photo one thing of course is the fact of anglo merkel the german chancellor walks up to be the japanese Prime Minister one of the things to watch for is the fact that saudi arabia is not represented by its king but by mohammed bin solemn on the crown prince now lost 20 relying to one is are is some of the leaders shunned him and refused to shake his hand because of the the killing of Jamal Khashoggi will that happen again remember agnes come up that u. N. Report came out with an absolutely damning report on. Talking of the u. N. Were seeing the secretary general there right now antonio terrorists about the killing will some of the leaders again shun mohammed been some man will see that when i think we see all the leaders. Together one by one theyre coming out another as its pretty evident now as you see this succession of leaders as i explained earlier on there are many more than 20 here 19 countries in the g 20 plus the e. U. But others get invited here and some of these are not like antonio terrace the u. N. Secretary general are not leaders of countries they are leaders of International Organizations that are also here when you get all these leaders here clearly they deal with the agenda Prime Minister modi of india but they also deal with a lot of bilateral. Issues between the various countries and a lot of the real business doesnt get done in the big sessions when theyre all together it gets done or thats when they have one on one meetings maybe not even formal meetings when they just bump into each other and have a few words thats where some of the real business at a summit like like this gets done indeed and jamison you were talking about all the handshaking alyea and i wonder is there a price a call as to the order in which were seeing all of the as various leaders come out and gretchens our. I can tell you that probably noughts in terms of which order theyre coming in because it is a bit of a nightmare getting this many leaders and their private jets into the same city at the same time on time someone is nearly always late im told by some of those for the u. N. General assembly which is one of the few events like this where you have so many leaders more leaders in this in one place at one time in new york but those that work in protocol of the u. N. General assembly its like Traffic Control trying to get all these leaders in place at the right time and again james that its a difficult job and clearly you dont want to upset anyone i can imagine and and immediately after this family photographs i believe theres a theres a working lunch and then and then a Plenary Session how are we expecting any major announcements to come out today or is it is it really just a chance for them all to approach each other and start having those conversations. Well look i think at the end of this they try and come up with a communique that is difficult because one of the key things the g 20 was built on is free trade and you are at a time of some new protectionism in the world particularly by President Trump so the communique breaking in the ground on that is difficult certainly there are the e. U. Are saying we must not go backwards on Climate Change from the last g 20 which didnt take place but took place less than a year ago. So that it that is one of the key issues the japanese i think of being very careful not to set the bar too high for their communique one of the issues they are hoping on the environment you know Climate Change is so controversial particularly with President Trump theyre hoping theres one thing they can get through on the environment and thats the issue of plastics and the reduce reducing the use of plastic in the world single use plastic and and the damage it does to the oceans of the world thats certainly something the u. N. Secretary general is pushing i can tell you from where im normally based in the u. N. Headquarters there in the last month theyve banned all plastic bottles you work at a plastic bottle inside the u. N. The u. N. Is hoping that is going to be the situation every single place around the world and james in one is there is we we did see president trying to strike a trade truce with china and on the on the said you are for tomorrow is a is a meeting for president xi jinping and and on trying ben and theyre clearly now in the midst of a trade war are we expecting any kind of truce to be struck again especially now that were hearing that the chinese do you have a whole series of conditions and demands that theyre putting on the table and to try before they even really wanting to have a conversation about ending this trade war. Yeah i mean i think thats a very big question there certainly the chinese are talking things up and saying that theyre close to a deal and some on the u. S. Side is saying that we saw Christine Lagarde a moment ago the head of the i. M. F. And clearly the big worry for everyone is that these trade wars in particular that one thats at the center of the Global Economy between the u. S. And china could impact the Global EconomyPresident Trump is constantly touting the success of the stock market but there are many economists who believe that youve got to be very careful talk of the man and he appears President Donald Trump whos already met shinzo are coming up for the handshake they know each other extremely well President Trump was in japan in the last month for a visit meeting the new emperor as well warm greetings there despite those comments from President Trump a few days ago about the defense treaty between the u. S. Military so they said you know he had no unified around the gulf this time again if he does. Well i would never say never with. The president the United States doesnt always stick to plans and just the last big summit i covered in asia of course was the one with the North Koreans and that wrapped up early when President Trump decided to end things and go home so no no golf scheduled to our knowledge here at this stage he has very very busy with meetings the 2 big meetings are the one that takes place in not far from now in fact in a couple of hours time with president putin will be their 6th meeting together face to face to face meetings that theyve had meetings that have had a great deal of scrutiny because the not really had invited many other advisors to those meetings in fact some of the meetings have just been with interpreters and the 1st of those meetings President Trump even took away his own interpreters notes president xi now and that of course is the other big meeting that is the meeting President Trump and president xi is already had his meeting with shinzo are very theyre shaking hands again now the meeting between the u. S. And china is the big event on saturday what are they going to do about that trade war between the 2 countries is there a deal to avert it theyll talk to weve mentioned iran but theyll be talking to about north korea christe president xi in the last few days was in pyongyang what message did he get there what message will he potentially pass from pyongyang to President Trump whos diplomacy on north korea has gone from the very last what low water mark of threatening to annihilate the country at the u. N. General assembly to the high watermark about a year ago in singapore and then of course that 2nd summit in hanoi that really was not a Great Success lets talk about 3rd summit President Trump on his way from here to seoul after this summit to meet president moon of south korea. To discuss the situation or the group and james i think were going to. Continue were going to leave it there just for just for now james but were going to come back to you very shortly when theyre all lined up on the stage to talk through the dynamics there that was our diplomatic go to james bays thanks for that james now the u. S. House of representatives has passed a bill providing 4600000000. 00 in emergency funds for the migrant crisis on the southern border the democrat controlled house and the republican led senate each approved different versions of the bill this week house leaders reluctantly agreed on the Senate Version to get the funding approved before congress breaks for the july 4th holiday the bill now goes
