Kingdom needs and of discussion from there on Everything Else was taken to get he explained to mr bachchan that this was a deal with saudi arabia and therefore things were done differently. They wanted 43000000000. 00 worth of weaponry that was 6000000000. 00 pounds in commission. The false majority of most people understand this bribes. Well continue to Work Together against the terrorists who threaten the way of life pacifist. One day i started crying and it was a man to look at it coming im actually he said ive been working for a travel company and we had a kind of slush fund we used to distribute to saudis and other arabs when they came to britain for be all to help the path of alms deals along. I did tell the sexual trysts or is that when the saudi military officers would come along he would present them with canteens of cut 3 that was something that they liked another thing they liked was girls so he would take about the town and get the girls. To be honest it seemed like quite small beer payments made some of them from rather on as nomic activities and chips to be talked about cooldowns that sort of thing theres only 2 things that count in business my friend money and sex the rest you can write as much as you like is absolute garbage you can measure weapon beautiful the president s secretary. Because theyre more distracted looking at their secretaries the what the hell you are talking about. And that is sometimes old as you need. To use an Escort Agency called launches because of the specialties of the chief of staff of the army life long but some of them. We had their secretary of the embassy come and review the photos she said i want to swim with this when i win this one i win this one i had the girls i ride one day before and i said girls i know you will be paid handsomely for this but do me a favor if you get any people thought that is relevant please bring your cross because i could use it in for huge interest the information i will get another 2000 euro bonus so with 60 grand i signed the contract worth 3000000 so it wasnt ideal. M m i phone rang again. It was another whistle and he said you have no idea what it is that youre getting into here. And he said this slush fund is much much bigger than you realize our job was to look after the really high level people those who used to come to england who were being bribed essentially be a people of the level of the head of the Saudi Air Force who was a royal prince. We would fly the 2 of us angelica and they would buy cars and dress just it wasnt shopping like you would i would think in the end when they gather together all the shopping we would charter an entire jumbo jet to fly it all back to saudi arabia it was in the attempt to try and trace through the Bank Accounts who the ultimate beneficiaries are that the case became really very serious as the trail appeared to lead towards senior members of Society Royal family. The most outrageous example was that maybe 80 i dont order to go the way with prince bandar at one point i made him a present of a huge commercial airline had all of his various which he promptly have painted in the gray and silver colors of the Dallas Cowboys and rivers favorites a very good team i used to fly around in that quite cheerfully. Was the case centered on establishing the ultimate beneficiary of exceptionally large amounts of money paid by big sherry space for Consultancy Services and. Theres evidence that mark fashion of this is that your son got 12000000 in cash for his work as a fixer. This is part of the dont. Go this route dont worry its a really beautiful weapon its also made if you want to sell on the market and youre looking probably about 3500 euros and why you keep it in the house because it was all her. And you can do that legally. You know but no more words you cant i saw this in the house. It is oh sure the shot of the neighbor. I dont know the unions money i dont mind paying bribes to politicians its part of the deal the thing about politicians is that theyre very much like prostitutes but only more expensive. Polities is it dated by the whims of the arms industry politicians are nothing more than sales reps by their friends to have as much power as a middle ranking executive and want to martin a dent of the day they do with that old. When executive goes to bribe a foreign official he says to himself look ive taken a lot of risk to take this 5000000. 00 that im paying to the Prime Minister of x. Y. Z. Who makes an arrangement with Prime Minister of x. Y. Z. Ill hand over the 5000000 could you take half of that 5000000 and you send it to the following bank account in churchill and well share in this for. The 1st time an executive does that and he collects 2500000. 00 he says wow this is a Good Business to be and within moments of that realization he is now no longer in the business of selling airplanes hes in the business of selling bribes and he is now scouring the world for somebody to find to bribe. Its. Head to feel. They can. To shoot. I. Was i had to do. What it. Is out. It seems. Like. Each child would call. Each kid. More. With. Them in the phone rang again. This was somebody who said you have no idea what youre getting into he said this whole be a thing is much much bigger that goes right to the very top what he had was something that you never see as a journalist swiss bank records of International Corporate payments going all over the world he showed me how be a set of a whole system with lloyds bank under which they channeled secret payments into a British Virgin islands offshore Company Called red diamond and from red diamond the money went into this guy Swiss Bank Account and he then used it to distribute to the local politicians taking a big chunk of himself of course you know i can assure you we dont we and i believe most companies all to the business of late payments but also as you suggest a lot of subsequent they do employees of government it is just part of the way business is done. We were actually able to publish what was the most dangerous story that prince bandar could be given not just the plane but over the years a total of 1000000000 pounds we did not invent. Corruption i mean i mean he would have been and they had hanky panky and they had to go down to edit so i mean this is this is. I show you prince of state run and a friend. What is greed. Of course none of us are greedy its only the other fellow whose greed. The world runs on individuals pursuing their circulators. All those people who believe that greed violence etc these primal socalled primal instincts other religions things and Everything Else is a social construction theyve lost their mind and for the last 50 years at least policy has been made based on the assumption of greed and its rule in the world. Every. Path towards believe there is no nature of society so you have to nurture individual is i dont accept that at all i think there are very many good Public Policy initiatives for creating societies. And the beirut there saying a lot to you. Is a comment isnt a k 47 kalashnikov. A society that decides that the bulk of its budget is going to go to arms manufacturing building of a military eccentric the have made a moral decision that militarism is more important then the creation of wellbeing for the population. This is not the world i want to live in i want to live in the real world and the real world is peopled by real emotions including love and generosity. My god if you want is freedom the freedom of human beings of individuals to pursue their own set yes i think what they term freedom means is economic license and economic license and those who control property and those who control capital has in fact been a threat not only to equality but a threat to the freedom of peoples all over the world and not only in europe and in the United States but nafta in asia and in latin america i want you to name me any society in which you have any large measure of that freedom where capitalism and Free Enterprise has not been the predominant mechanism of the Free Enterprise system has spread through the force of arms and those on through wielded by governments that was Government Intervention under the name of the Free Enterprise system but a Government Intervention which destroyed the freedoms of many people not least of which of the people of chile. From the 1950 s. All the way through the 1970 s. The cia and the us military were engaged in covert actions throughout central mad america throughout africa really throughout the world where they were assassinating populist leaders they were backing up right Wing Military juntas funding and arming death squads like the contras in nicaragua or battalion 316. 00 and under us and i and there were these spate of assassinations across the globe. In countries like mine people have been killed to be quiet to know that any day any time youre going to be killed you dont know how but its coming. We were fighting in the league and still we are fighting you know body guards minds that dont want to work going inclusiveness they just take a. Action is not only about taking from india but taking from the people. Even to dreams take on the next. The last half of what is called the cold war i dont know it to be a very hard war for many parts of the wood. From the standpoint of want it badly and would cause the victims or what i would think of really as of people trying to make their own futures. There was an attempt in the global south to create an alternative imagination for people. But in the early 1970 s. This attempt was destroyed and it was stopped through a real genuine attempt by the global lot to take over the institutions of the world including the world bank the i. M. F. Souls not simply that the bible of the south was incapable of carrying forward their dreams. It was a very strong word these dreams were assassinated. Its not just the one off killings the coir the cool there. Its the entire dream that had to be killed. To be sure to do us the real book. But arent going to or much else. Going to them live by us him but are any mere mere holy orders true or a loser will be because the indian. Looks e. U. And so does he not one does gotta put some on the most have anybody says. When i said kind of guy is here. The whole you know men team you julio to what are the salmon. You know be your command be. Nice and fit you have them and leave. Egypt then go to micio. The joint hearings of the House Select Committee to investigate covert arms transaction with iran. And the select committee on secret military assistance to iran in the nicaraguan opposition will come to order. Of 2 years of overgrazing the damage caused to the precious grasslands of chile is being revised with one of the worlds biggest ever conservation projects. Theyre pretty emblematic of the patagonians that if theyre plentiful and theyre calm like this one is then you know that the system is coming back and that they feel no threats and thats why youre on fire we wilding patagonia on aljazeera. Those are the top stories stay with us shad the world continues next and im going to have the aljazeera news hour for you in just under half an hour i hope that. The joint hearings of the House Elect Committee to investigate covert arms transaction with iran. And the select committee on secret military assistance to iran and the nicaraguan opposition we all come to Order Congress began to address what they perceive to be an insanely out of control series of covert actions with little to no congressional oversight we have been supplying lethal weapons to terrorist nation involving the Us Government in military activities in direct contravention of the law and lying to the congress now i believe that democracy cannot survive that kind of abuse. And people like dick cheney and Donald Rumsfeld who are relatively new to government at the time did not like when congress had we need to step in and confront the National Security state and whats become a very out of control kill program cheney then went on during the reagan years in the eightys to serve in congress and when the iran contra scandal broke out into the open cheney did not Like Congress being involved with anything that the executive branch was doing. And you had to see understand all that emanated from the highest echelons of power and the Reagan Administration was acting as though it had nothing to do with it ive told you all that i know and you know the truth of the matter is for quite some long time all that you knew was what i told you so you can make. It to. Our witnesses morning is mr Robert Mcfarlane the former National Security adviser to the president. Mr mcfarlane will you welcome you to the committee and we look forward to your testimony. Mr mcfarlane. Did you have any discussion about the possibility. Of in effect farming out the whole contra support operations in nicaragua to another country which will call country run yes thats correct and did you in fact succeed in obtaining money from another country. Which well call country toe. Thats correct. I had a practice meeting periodic lee who was the official from the country true about the systems we could provide some cases arms sales. And he intended to provide a contribution of a 1000000. 00 per months to the contras through the end of the year. You have no problems working with the cia we have no problem working with the United States government and unless the cia does not work for the government then i think we have a bigger problem there are many cases where some americans are question that you know well thank heaven was not in connection with saudi arabia. I think that there was a substantial shadow government trying to run fine if they actually managed a. These events have been characterized by some pretty strong statements weve heard talk of a grave constitutional crisis and even been treated to talk about a coup in the white house not only does cheney sort of defend iran contra but he argues that iran contra is actually a model for how the u. S. Should be conducting its National Security policy he is a radical subscriber to this notion of the unitary executive effectively what youre doing is saying on certain parts of american policy we dont have a democracy we have a dictatorship as a matter of fact i was. Very definitely involved in the decisions about support to the Freedom Fighters my idea to begin with. In my opinion there is no justification for further restrictions on the power and flexibility a future president. Of the National Security lead today is mostly composed of people who hit the revolving door multiple times during their lot of nomination of richard b. Cheney to be secretary of the friends is going to. Make a name for themselves in the private industry and then they come into the get. This revolving door keeps the National Security leak very small and very wealthy. And increasing its wealth as it goes up the journey to the extent that then when you get to the top as cheney did then you can become a member of the plutocracy that runs the country to this is an impressive crowd the haves. And the have more. Money commissioned a study by halliburton to find out how much more of the Defense Department could be privatized. To serve our troops palaver and was he laid to get this 1000000. 00 contract and of course returned a verdict that oh mr secretary lots more of it can be privatized. Dick cheney leaves the Defense Department and goes and heads halliburton himself and he spends the entire 1990 s. Building up the war empire well if were going to talk about star wars we might as well invite darth vader i. Am. Happy to accept. When he comes back into power as Vice President and then they start hiring halliburton to you know in advance even if u. S. Troops going into iraq how a burden personnel and equipment was being deployed to the gulf its hard to look at this and not say these guys had a very Long Term Plan for how they were going to increase the powerful infrastructure of private companies. What weve essentially done is to create a network of corporations that have the fire power of small nation states that could you know overthrow some small governments around the world. In essence we in the United States have privatized the ultimate Public Function war. When you know right now you know bombs have got the time with the like food. You know munitions its got. So bad that its. Just. You can see. In iraq the f. 16 s and f. 18 s were firing 6000000 dollars within seconds coming back we are me in going up again. Theres no hope of any more because theres always a small cobble of people for more of the really really Good Business. It doesnt matter that were losing the war in afghanistan albertan could care less its good for them good for profit. Margins here and there and i will say. I dont want this year were going to the. Bad lot i was hoping for you again good luck and i dont know your last year alone. It is the bit. Where weve undergone a corporate coup detat in slow motion. 35000 lobbyists in washington they write the legislation they write the bills. All it takes is one phone call from somebody on the hill to someone in the pentagon saying hey turn on the dogs the hills out to get our program the guys in the senate are on board we need you to turn on the gucci shoes guys to straighten this thing out the guys been the lobbyist. And what this does is just lock the system up thats the whole name of the game its its called political engineering and im like Political Science political engineering is real. One of the most important things dunder stand it essentially creates what we call a self like an ice cream cone. And its like perpetual motion machine for getting ever increasing Defense Budgets the way we do it is by downplaying the future consequences to start a new weapon we over promises performance under promise its cost we then systematically spread dollars jobs and profits to as many congressional districts as quickly as possible so that everybody has skin in the game. The people who are invested in this state or people like the largest defense contractor in the world Lockheed Martin they will die before they see it going to. Going to change the world. Were probably already working. What did martin basically just similar as your last 2 posts with them tickles you knowing all branches of the government and the whole them. And this is the group that made them if you look like a bunch of schoolboys. Fiscal year 9992. 3 trillion missing fiscal year 2001 point one trillion missing the pentagon has claimed year after year that the reason it cant account for the money is because its computers dont communicate with each other one trillion 1. 00 bills stacked high would reach nearly 68000 miles into space one 3rd of the way to the moon. I got a phone call from the f. B. I. Saying that i was a target of a death threat. And thats what happens when you go against the big boys who has the contracts today to make those systems communicate with each other and how much have the taxpayers paid for them there are times that corporations do things they should not do in which case they tend to be suspended for some period there are times then that corporations can get out of the penalty box it is you know any was never in the penalty box if you could proceed to my 2nd question please the 2nd question. I forgot what the 2nd question was. Individuals operating in the shadows and never having their names called are able to leverage the power of the military and the Foreign Policy apparatus for their own personal pick uni ery in. Whats now whos the enemy how do we justify. What better our new other me. He can bring to the minus 11 yellow mutinies thats our unity back home by the i dont assist those for me. That i have on but i dont know but he deck years he married a man to be dorian out of the many guys who are no medals for the new or let the analysis which you see mean this is tony then says and similarly im going to see mean you know better you dont know either outfit on the deal or. I have a nary doubt. But i see we have a knack even they let our money earned to that extent i am in a fabulous adam out of this delusion i must see what i want in a service and i need an assist those for me. Is a see in most fundamental demand your home on a c. C. Your. Get to the we and i nak maintenance young to get a 2nd a bit earlier life. I think of the most basic level when we realize how weve entered into a permanent state of war like what often proponents of. Counter terrorism on a global scale think of as a long war but a War Without EndSomething Like that. And i think that what weve accepted is a political regime that is sustained by fear is a very old very old political tactic i mean machiavelli asin the prince is it better for the prince to be feared or loved and his conclusion is because the locus of fear the the source of fear resides in him in the prince it can be constant for his rule whereas the locus of love resides in the people its in their power and so for them could be constant long lasting means so much already opens a question that he probably doesnt provide us the answer with what would it mean to have our social arrangement like the basis of our social choices. Be founded on love. I dont think one has to justify the cost and nature of the National Security state one just has to keep the people fearful of knopf to support it but what i want to bring to your attention today is the potentially much more sinister nexus between iraq and the o. Kind of terrorist network. Every word in that speech was gone over by the director of Central Intelligence and his Deputy Director after so it was nothing that i made up it was nothing that i stuck in there and in fact some people tried to stick extra things in there that the Intelligence Community wouldnt verify with multisourcing and i said no powell grabbed me physically which was unlike him and drug me into a space at the cia at langley and said throw all the material in my presentation about terrorism out cut it out out this amount this is just within an hour george tenet the director of Central Intelligence made a spectacular bombshell presentation we have just learned from a high level al qaida operative under interrogation about significant contacts between baghdad smoot of our ought and al qaeda. This was devastating. Heres the director of Central Intelligence telling the secretary of state that he has interrogated evidence well the secretary turned to me and said put it back you. Continues to have a deep interest in acquiring weapons of mass destruction as with the story of the kawi in his network i can trace the story of a senior terrorist operative telling how iraq provided training in these weapons to al qaeda later i learned that that was shake out libby that had to happen just instantly happened it happened months before theyd been water boarded in egypt 20 did this no u. S. Personnel were present and he had recanted within a couple of weeks and we never were told about that every statement i make today is backed up by sources solid sources these are not assertions were giving you are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence we were indisputable we were allowed to. At this hour american and Coalition Forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm iraq to free and some people and to defend the world from grave danger as karl rove famously said to this reporter you know you guys are reality based communities we make reality by the time you figured out you know whats wrong with our reality weve moved on the creation of another reality did you sell or cause to come into the possession of Saddam Hussein weapons of mass destruction did the United States sell to him absolutely not. Iran iraq was on such a scale and i was on the iranian side and i went down to the balcony i was actually given a gasket and so let me take the train back right away up to town and the carriages with crimes with iranian soldiers had been gassed someone just cause aggression and one man who was reading. It was so he put a handkerchief blood on his lips. Gradually cargoes became permeated with a sort of 36 miles and i realized it was the smell of the gas they were coughing up from the lungs i was going round the car has opened the windows on the night air is trying to clean the train out of the smell of obviously chemical. After 2003 i was being attacked on radio shows especially from america you know complaining about the American Invasion you proceed on and i said excuse me i was on the train of iranians gassed by the iraqis and the chemical components came from the United States at the very time that you all rumsfeld was meeting saddam you were meeting with Saddam Hussein i think we have some video of that. Of that meeting tell me what was going on during this is why did you get this video from the Iraqi Television is on the Iraqi Television when did they give it to you recently are we back then we dug this out of the c. N. N. Library i see isnt that interesting. There i am. Our war on terror. Begins with al qaida. But it does not in. This very phrase war on terror is irrational its like saying. A war on more. When the Serious Fraud office launched its investigation into the crimes that we were covering it turned out that many of these arms deals have been forced through by tony blair personally piece of dirty case you dont. And once you start a war. You open a kind of pandoras box you dont control it it controls you. Was being set up my goodness it was. My children. Today there are good terrorists and bad the bad terrorists those in yemen who the United States deems to be a threat the good terrorists those who are in syria the job here is weve been there before. I mean if you consider the of not to stunt story theyve learned nothing. Today if i say that the saudis are giving money to groups that are insane here that are not only illusory models so the. People who say you are a conspiracy theorist. American song review put 1000000000. 00 each to give them training equipment we out of that was so clear to all those people to go we had. Peace thats what we want freedom and peace not. The doctrine that has endured from bush to obama is that the world is a battlefield and that the United States has the right to go into any country around the world to conduct what they call kinetic operations lethal operations regardless of what International Law says if youre a small state like we were for 150 years in in essence these are these spain france england russia youve got to be exquisitely good at diplomacy you got to be able to talk yourself out of lots of things and make deals and compromises and so forth but if youre the worlds head human you dont deal with anybody you smack him you your military and you smack him. They wanted 43000000 pounds worth of weaponry that was 6000000000 pounds in commission. There is no hope of any more because theres always a small cobbles people for war really really Good Business. In essence we in the United States have privatized the ultimate Public Function more shadow on aljazeera. President donald trump has imposed what hes described as hard hitting new sanctions on iran as tensions continue to simmer in the gulf the white house says it will lock up billions of dollars worth of iranian assets in a rare move the sanctions go right to the top targeting the Supreme LeaderAyatollah Ali Khamenei and irans foreign minister will be added to the list later this week russia has promised to counter u. S. Sanctions with an oil for goods the 0 which it wants others to join meanwhile the u. S. Secretary of state might pump ala has been in saudi arabia and the United Arab Emirates trying to assemble a Global Coalition against iran mike hanna reports though from washington. As promised another round of sanctions against iran these in addition to a number already put in place and directed at the countrys most Senior LeadersPresident Trump did not elaborate on the precise nature of the sanctions apart from saying that they would bar the leaders from access to Financial Instruments i want to thank our military and i want to thank all of the people that have been working with me over the last number of months on this theres a lot of restraint has been shown by us a lot of restraint. And that doesnt mean were going to show in the future no complete details provided by the treasury secretary either but speech did confirm that some of the sanctions are a direct response to last weeks attack on a u. S. Drone iran contended the drone had penetrated its space an accusation denied by the u. S. Im not going to identify which ones or which ive said that some of this was in the works some of this is a result of recent activities deep concern once again expressed by the u. N. Secretary general he has urged all sides to show nerves of steel and he is continuing to maintain that and he wants to make sure that they. Take steps to avoid any further sorts of of provocation one way or the other the u. S. Is ramping up its diplomatic actions against iran the secretary of state shuttling through several gulf states including saudi arabia to shore up a wide anti Iran Alliance but at the same time a carrot of sorts being extended with the stick the white house releasing a statement saying the president has been clear that hes open to the possibility of future talks with iran. Mike hanna aljazeera Washington Well we have correspondents covering the story in tehran that the United Nations but lets start with john hendren who is in washington for us john good to see you just tell us a little bit more about these sanctions and what the u. S. Hopes to achieve with them. Or are these sanctions were targeted at invid individuals all the way up as you mentioned to the Supreme Leader of iran and they include 8 military leaders including one of them who was believed to be in charge of the unit that shot down that u. S. Drone and theyre supposed to be boring these people from using the International Financial system making life a little more difficult on them and that follows previous sanctions that were designed to block iran from benefiting from its oil industry from profiting on that the u. S. Believes that there are a number of different measures that suggest that sanctions are beginning cumulatively to bite on that nation but we should also keep in mind the u. S. And iran have not had normal relations in 40 years and that tells you a Little Something about the stubbornness of the persian nation that President Trump says we do not seek conflict with iran or any other country goes on to say that we can only tell you we can never let iran have a Nuclear Weapon hes looking for some kind of over arching deal here but so far the iranians are not responding so thats what the u. S. Is trying to do on an economic level diplomatically of course theyre trying to assemble what theyre calling a Global Coalition against iran might pump ale was in saudi arabia the United Arab Emirates how likely is this Global Coalition you know how likely is it to come into existence. Will make the argument to asian nations that 60 percent of the oil that goes through the strait of hormuz where this drone was shot down goes to asia and that therefore this is a global problem not just a problem with the u. S. And thats going to be part of their effort to expand that coalition of countries in the middle east to include asian nations as well and really ratchet up the pressure on iran john hendren with the latest from washington d. C. John thank you well how is all of this going down in iran itself they are so divided joins us live now from tehran at dorset good to see you so what reaction there to these new sanctions. Well were getting some reaction late this evening and mainly the reaction were getting so far is about the. News that by the end of this week the foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif will be under u. S. Sanctions this was comes as somewhat of a shock here because this person is not only a well known figure inside and outside iran he is a career diplomat he lived in the United States he works for the u. N. The delegation of the u. N. Hes very well known internationally been sort of the face of the Islamic Republic on the International Level and for the United States to sanction this person is very very surprising and telling really of where things stand at the moment gerards or if himself the foreign minister has not commented specifically about this yet but all the local media are pointing to this specific decision by u. S. President donald trump of course we know that the Foreign Ministry spokesperson has said that there was really nothing left for the u. S. To sanction they have over the past 40 years continuously pressured iran and sanctions of various different parts of this country so that is what the general mood is here like the in once meant that the foreign minister will be sanctioned is very much a surprise here so door so i guess hugely symbolic that the u. S. Is going you know very much for the top leadership all the irat and so the symbolism is there but ultimately how big an impact do you think these sanctions are likely to actually have. Well theyre not going to affect anybody thats under sanctions as of this evening with the Supreme Leader himself he is it 80 year old man who has not traveled outside the country for over 30 years the last time he left iran was before he was Supreme Leader when he was the president in 1989 we went on a state visit to china and he hasnt left since for various reasons of being the security and for him to be sanctioned as more of a symbol a gesture from a message from the u. S. Government of what theyre trying to say according to analysts here many believe that this is the u. S. President s last and final resort theres really nothing else for them to do but to resort to this in terms of the revolutionary guard commanders of the of sanctions all of those hard level commanders really will not be affected on any level many here see this as very much a final step for the u. S. In trying to pressure iran back to the newco sheeting table something the iranians have said that will never happen their security with the latest from tehran door so thank you and the u. N. Security council has just finished discussing the situation with iran alan fischer is live from the United Nations in new york kinder stand that meetings just finished alan what came out of it. Just in the last few minutes the meeting was due to discuss the attacks in me and earlier this month in the gulf that targeted a number of oil tankers and the americans say that they presented evidence to the u. N. Security council that clearly suggested iran was behind these attacks they say the design of the limpet mines that were used clearly indicates really an experiment hes and they say the even caught and the rain in navy vessel going back to one of the vessels to take one of the mines of didnt explode said the should expertise by placing these mines in places where the ships would be disabled and not completely destroyed no the iranians of course deny those allegations but its interesting that at this meeting the americans also discussed the downing of the draw in very recently as well and that certainly upset the really ends because they said look here is the situation where the u. N. Security council is being briefed only by one party because iran was not allowed into the meeting it is not currently a member of the u. N. Security council all the ambassador showed up outside the door anyway he knew he wasnt going to get in and he condemned the u. S. For their actions over the last few weeks and also for imposing new sanctions the question should be addressed to the United States who has initiated an economic war against iran who has initiated an economic. Terrorism i guess even young people at the same time the United States has has brought a large number of feeds into our region. What our model is in our region saw in order to it the escalated the u. S. Should take steps in order to to put aside their armada from our region and pull and also move a very economic. Warfare against saving and people. The really ambassador was asked about the possibility of talks between iran and the u. S. He said hes asked the secretary general to arrange a discussion about security in the region but the idea of speaking to the americans doesnt seem to be close to being on the table at the moment saying that they simply couldnt negotiate with a country that was insistent in placing sanctions on the iranian people though the refrain we hear from diplomats here at the United Nations over the last few days and again today has been there needs to be deescalation there needs to be talks the what that everyone has is that the next incident between iran and the u. S. Will lead to an escalation and things will be much worse than they are no helen fisher at the u. N. Allan thank you well for more lets speak to early rising hes director of the iran project at the International Crisis group and joins us live now from washington d. C. Welcome to aljazeera thank you for joining us i guess donald trump always made it clear he wanted a tougher nuclear deal hence you know these sanctions that a lot of the diplomacy listening to the Iranian Ambassador speaking there at the u. N. It doesnt seem that theyre any closer to talking so do you think that the american actions will in the end prove counterproductive. Absolutely i mean this was entirely predictable the maximum pressure is going to push the iranian economy into the ground but is not going to result in any of the strategic objectives that the trumpet ministration had in mind it hasnt altered irans behavior in the region it hasnt rendered them more amenable to negotiating with the trumpet ministration and it has not created the kind of uprising on iranian streets that some in the front of ministration were hoping would result in regime change and thats perhaps being a little bit confusing to understand of the americans are trying to do also the stepping back from what we thought could have been an immediate escalation just a few days ago i mean what do you make of the National Security apparatus within the trumpet ministration right now because of it of course theyve been without a defense Permanent Defense secretary since december dont trump has always said he didnt want to get embroiled in a new war in the middle east so so why these actions now. Look there seems to be a Clear Division fissure within the trumpet ministration in the sense that the president is primarily interested in reaching a better and broader deal with iran but no one in his National Security team shares that objective and in fact thats why the trumpet ministrations iran policy i think is on a collision course with itself in the sense that the president wants to avoid a war but his policy is leading us towards the war every escalation is bringing us closer to a brink of an escalation that could result in a catastrophic military clash and i dont think the president would be able to achieve a negotiated solution with this cast of characters that have currently surrounded them well the u. S. Is certainly trying to get its allies rallying around the saudi arabia the United Arab Emirates on the other side russia is saying it will try to counter u. S. Sanctions of course we have the europeans at least playing lip service to the fact that they would like the nuclear deal to continue to many what options do you think are open to a ran. Look they run ins have a lot of experience living under sanctions and theyre quite resilient however this time u. S. Sanctions have proven to be much more effective that they dissipated and the situation might be sustainable in the short run but it is not in the medium to long term and thats why they have put aside their maximum patience policy that they implemented during the 1st year of the trumpet ministrations maximum pressure strategy and now are starting to push back theyre starting to roll back some of their commitments under the nuclear deal theyre starting to push back in the region and again the problem by the iranian policy of imposing a cost on on the u. S. Administration is that it actually increases tensions and the risk of an inadvertent conflict in the region. Levis. Project that rector for the International Crisis group sir thank you for sharing your views with us thank you. Still to come here on the news hour from london as airstrikes continue to rain down on syrias last rebel held province we speak to the brothers of a 3 year old boy who survived an attack last week as he feels a few appear mourns police assured that the army general accused of leading the failed coup that killed 5 senior officials last. In scored the International Olympic committee announces the hosts of for the 2026 of winter games. Protests have been taking place across the palestinian territories as anger grows at this weeks economic conference in bahrain and the socalled deal of the sentry it is part of protesters in the occupied west bank burned images of the king of bahrain and one angry gaza resident address this former p. L. O. Leader Yasser Arafats brandished a gun that several burning images of u. S. President donald trump a series of more formal protests are also being held to coincide with the bahrain summit. They began it with the protest Marathon Race across the gaza strip israels Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu says that he will give the peace plan fair consideration the palestinian leaders are boycotting the meeting. I dont think it will be any results from the minimal workshop because it was built on wrong foundations what is built on falsehood is false the minimal workshop came to solve the problem but what problem the economic problem but there is a political problem it can all make problem with for example when they say they want to give the palestinians an amount of money for the palestinians they should have been into t. A statehood so you need to 1st recognize the state after that you can say the state needs this and that. To abraham was one of the protests in occupied west bank. Well its going to have always there is action to the minimum summit that this expected to be held tomorrow they say that the road to solving the palestinian israeli conflict is not through economic means and they said that palestine is not for sale. In a recent poll 80 percent of palestinians say that they dont believe the u. S. Plan would lead them to statehood or that the u. S. Is serious about its efforts to listen in president Mahmoud Abbas said that while the economy is important and foreign aid is important that most important story here is political the Palestinian Authority has stopped engaging with the u. S. Ever since the Us Administration has moved its embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem announcing jerusalem as israels capital. This is one of the many protests and p. L. O. Factions have ruled in the west bank that are expected to announce that when they were just the 2nd kind of the. Need abraham there was senior white house adviser jared kush there spearheaded the socalled the deal of the sentry just before flying to her and he spoke to aljazeera and said that hes confident the conference will be a success so i think its already been a success in the sense that we have every country coming from the region we have a lot of countries coming from throughout the world despite people who tried to get them not to come theyre all coming and thats a very big 1st step the 2nd step is that weve been able to get some of the top investors and people from throughout the world to come who are showing interest in helping the Palestinian People in the region right now with a lot of Investment Funds that wont invest in the middle east because its not stable they dont have peace they dont have security and so we want to show people that there is a Great Potential a great future for this region if its possible i think the israeli population and the palestinian population and the broader middle east right now cares a lot about have security the more you have security the more you could have for your flow of goods for flow of people i know thats a very big issue for the palestinians they want to be able to move through the borders i think the cost of goods are too high because it takes a long time to go. Through the borders but theres a direct correlation between the ramping up of terror and the threat to israel and the slowing down of the borders and so you know if we can create an environment where theres actual peace and again peace comes from compromise and well figure out what the right elements of that are the right time then that is the necessary precondition to be able to implement a lot of the Economic Reforms that were going to talk about at this conference and with regard to the Palestinian People when the president moved the embassy to jerusalem he said that this should not impact final status negotiations issues weve been working very carefully on a very deep proposal for what we think it helped bring this conflict which has been stuck forward and were hopeful that well be able to put that out soon and hopefully parties will be responsible theyll gauge on it and theyll try to move forward in syria nearly 500 civilians have been killed in the russian backed government offensive in the province the campaign to capture the last opposition held region began 9 weeks ago in northwestern syria on the ground Syrian Forces are now facing accusations of conducting a scorched earth policy of destroying crops zaha the reports now from beirut it will be a long recovery but khaled family is thankful he survived this 3 year old was injured in an airstrike last week. Beirut. Is here piers im our region has the clear and 3 days of mourning after the killing of 5 senior officials in an attempted coup on saturday evening flags have been lowered to half mast all government buildings a full military funeral will be held on wednesday for the Regional Governor and his advisors who are among those killed. Given the situation theres nothing to worry about at the moment we have set up a committee to look up to this issue and by her daughter the military funeral will go ahead as scheduled we are deeply saddened by the loss of our leaders we are in mourning but our people and our government should return to work after these days of mourning and to the families of the victims we send our deepest condolences for the Prime Minister i. B. M. It has made widespread political reforms since taking office last year but he struggled to end tensions within ethiopia some of the problems can be traced back to ethnic federalism which isnt trying in the constitution the amar region with the attempted coup happened is one of 9 selfgoverning areas there are more than 80 different ethnic groups in the country the larger ones of battle for influence including the oromo the to graham are and somali communities recent violence over land has displaced nearly 3000000 people since i came to power hundreds have been killed in the southern cities of a wasa ansaldo they are doing is following events from the capital addis ababa. The man responsible for the coup attempt in northern ethiopia over the weekend. Is dead we just spoke to the Prime Ministers press secretary she said that the government was trying to capture him and in that process he was shot and killed on monday the coup attempt happened on saturday she said that the Prime Minister is very much still in control of the government she said that there is a unity both within the government and within the military we know that the division between ethnic lines was a concern and something that b. The intelligence chief of the military said was the purpose of this coup but the press secretary has confirmed that that is not the case that the government and the military are united we asked her also about Prime Minister of meds interests and ongoing negotiations with trying to find a solution in neighboring sudan she said despite the domestic turbulence of the week and that the International Negotiations to find a solution for sudans government are ongoing Prime Minister of a is committed committed to National Security as much as hes also committed to region and peace and stability so the whole efforts around trying to bring peace and stability in sudan is also an extension of those efforts that are also within the country we cannot talk about ethiopia without talking about the neighbors and the regional context as when we also asked her about the internet when it would come back on its been shut down since saturday the government shut it down in the wake of the week and attacks she said that its a part of the investigation and that the internet needs to stay down until the investigation is complete because its very much an active situation still so she did not give a timeline as to when that would be restored but did acknowledge that the government had shut it down for security reasons she really wanted to drive home the point of unity that the Prime Minister is in control of the government and that safety and Security Forces are united even though ethiopia went through a very divisive weekend. Imagine a day when anyone with a basic knowledge of software could create a convincing yet completely fake video of another individual and imagine if that video showed for example a ward leader committing a crime or saying something that they didnt say well that day is already here and Artificial Intelligence researchers say the technology to detect such videos is still being worked on rob reynolds reports how lin is a master of technological shapeshifting he just transformed me into a north Korean Leader kim jong un. With the click of one button we can turn you into any person readily Available Technology can be used to create what are called deep thinks me and bernie and schumer this looks like democratic president ial candidate senator Elizabeth Warren making a speech but its not its an actress on a Popular American comedy show whos been transformed using deep Fake Technology only an expert can tell the difference how lynn says the implications for politics are disturbing you can actually create very realistic videos of someone saying things that that person never said and in times where you have elections this becomes very very dangerous recently a video of Democratic Congressional leader nancy pelosi doctored to make her look drunk was shared more than 2000000 times on facebook even though it was quickly identified as fake the problem is people see this and they believe it and even if 2 days later its debunked the damage is already done theyve shared it or they have this in the back of their mind groups with nefarious motives could create International Chaos with deep fake videos it could be you know this person has been assassinated they could change what political leaders can put anything in their mouth so thats i think the scary part of it and people would you know share a thing and say look i saw the video the person really said it only took a couple of clicks on the keyboard to change my image into that of lattimer putin as the Technology Advances rapidly experts say lawmakers had better start thinking seriously about regulating it. Recently a Congressional Committee held a hearing on deep thinks experts testified that at the very least platforms like facebook should be required to attach warning labels if you can put that warning on there same way as we do with cigarettes right you know we know that there are all but if people want to use them they can but they have the warnings there and you know what the warnings are the technology will soon reach a point worth even experts will be unable to spot doctored videos did fakes raise questions about belief truth and reality with Democratic Values and global stability at stake rob reynolds aljazeera los angeles and for more we can speak to a 1000000 edwards shes an internet law analyst and joins us now live via skype from edinburgh madame thank you so much for joining us here on aljazeera i guess when it comes to trying to stop the fakes theres 2 way of looking at 2 ways of looking at it one is prevention and detection starting with prevention is there anything that can be done to either stop or change the technology or make it more obvious. Yeah theres a number of techniques that are being used in trials and quite a lot of start ups that are playing around with them and one of the main techniques is wall to mail is adding a certain amount of material to a photo or a video so that it might be detected you could watermark to authentic videos so its almost a kite mark only you could add it to in the n. T. Content pratt so it could be filtered down to some point in its life cycle. But this is not by any means a panacea its very easy to move simple will tomorrow its just like removing met today to save from you know a photo you to use in your phone cam very easily down. To have more complex world months that be harder to remove you would need some kind of cryptographic prominence or something the back kind you might need to set up an entire Public Private key infrastructure it could all get there early intense fairly messy these are the kind of safeguards that right now we only really use for really vital things like payments Payment Systems banking and because it really does have the potential to totally change the level of public debate to a year change lives of politicians to change the outcome of elections and really what i mean were talking about an hour basically but generally speaking its not something that most people are aware of. Now i guess if theyre wary of it or too old theyre probably aware of it in the context Soprano Group in hate to say thats where the phrase deep originated and it was very much things like taking actresses like al gadol who played wonder woman and putting her head on to school and videos that sort of thing which it was no it seems relatively trivial look upset and. You know were now entering this 2nd stage which is what the congressional hearing was hearing about in which people are worried essentially that its the need needs thats your will to go saying. I think myself right now will individuals can probably tell at the video not always a really really big problem as it was say it is to get machines to recognize it so that platforms can fail to this step families so at least they have the option of 03 and indeed perhaps then governments might require them to. But were really a long way from that Fascinating Technology little ian edwards internet law analyst madam thank you for sharing your views with us thank you and now the u. S. Business updates brought to you by Qatar Airways going places together. Plastic pollution is one of the worlds most serious Environmental Issues its estimated 8000000 tonnes of plastic enter the oceans every year but in the philippines theyre putting it to good use as jamila a window gun now explains. For the last 2 years these students have been collecting rubbish every day its helped clean up the campus and helped build some of its facilities for every 2 kilos of Plastic Waste they collect the School Receives a brick made of plastic and cement and this school contains been built with them this school to watch tower was built with the same bricks 2 this is a solution for the environmental problem because we are they were getting wastes away from the landfill so we are in effect an alternative to downsize to the landfill some of the bricks are designed to allow rainwater to see through and that helps stop the streets flooding for some activists this may not be the most ecological way to eliminate the problems of plastic but this is seen as an immediate solution to the growing problems of landfills across the Country Waste can now be used to manufacture building materials. Make a lot of restraint has been shown by us a lot of restraint and that doesnt mean were going to show it in the future president signs an order imposing new sanctions on iran and its Supreme Leader. Hello im barbara sara this is al jazeera live from london also coming up as palestinians protest against the socalled deal of the century Jared Kirschner tells aljazeera hes confident that his conference in bahrain will be a success days after an airstrike devastated their home in syrias province we speak to 2 boys who nearly lost their 3 year old brother and we visit a school in the philippines where theyre turning their Plastic Waste into bricks for new facilities. U. S. President donald trump has imposed what hes described as hard hitting new sanctions on iran as tensions continue to simmer in the gulf the white. House says it will lock up billions of dollars worth of iranian assets in a rare move the sanctions go right to the top targeting the Supreme Leader ayatollah ali herman a and irans foreign minister will be added to that list later this week russia has promised to counter u. S. Sanctions with an oil for goods the 0 which it wants others to join meanwhile u. S. Secretary of state might pump aoe has been in saudi arabia and abu dhabi trying to assemble a Global Coalition against iran by khanna reports now from washington. As promised another round of sanctions against iran these in addition to a number already put in place and directed at the countrys most Senior LeadersPresident Trump did not elaborate on the precise nature of the sanctions apart from saying that they would bar the leaders from access to Financial Instruments i want to thank our military i want to thank all of the people that have been working with me over the last number of months on this theres a lot of restraint has been shown by us a lot of restraint. And that doesnt mean were going to show in the future no complete details provided by the treasury secretary either but steve did confirm that some of the sanctions are a direct response to last weeks attack on a u. S. Is ramping up its diplomatic actions against iran the secretary of state shuttling through several gulf states including saudi arabia to shore up a wide anti Iran Alliance but at the same time a carrot of sorts being extended with the stick the white house releasing a statement saying the president has been clear that hes open to the possibility of future talks with iran mike hanna aljazeera washington to get more now from john hendren whos been following developments in washington john now what more do we know about the sanctions. For those sanctions dont just target the Supreme Leader but they go broader than that they target his office they target 8 military commanders including the commander believed responsible for shooting down that american drone these are financial sanctions that are intended to bar these people from being able to use the International Banking systems are making life a little more difficult on some senior officials there and that comes on the tail of sanctions that were designed to stop iran from profiting off of its Lucrative Oil reserves so more financial sanctions but President Trump says he wants to keep this in the realm of diplomacy talking to reporters he said we do not see conflict with iran or any other country i can tell you we cannot ever let iran have Nuclear Weapons so the Pressure Campaign goes on yes so economic Pressure Campaign and also the u. The announcement that by the end of this week could be reined in foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif will be sanctioned by the Us Government comes as a surprise here in iran this person moments of us or reef is a career diplomat who has lived in the United States he was at the United Nations for many many years and his he is known as the face of the Islamic Republic on the International Stage that shovelled all around the world and met with many many diplomats he is very well known on that level so this decision is very much a surprise the foreign minister himself has not yet commented on this decision but many analysts say here this is one of the most surprising decisions by the trumpet ministration in the meantime the decision to sanction the iranian Supreme Leader will likely not have much effect the Ayatollah Khomeini has not left iran in over 30 years since he was president in 1909 the last time he left around was on a state visit to china in april of 1989 the commanders that have been sanctioned as well will not really be much affected by this decision many here believe this announcement shows how desperate the United States is in trying to get iran to the negotiating table but many believe this is actually going to have the opposite effect and create further divisions and tensions between the United States and iran but the Iranian Ambassador to the u. N. Said the u. S. Must stop Economic Warfare is equal bit on the ukrainian people. The question should be addressed to the United States who has initiated an economic war against iran who has initiated an economic. Terrorism against the iranian people at the same time the United States has has brought a large number of feeds into our region naval armada is in our region saw in order to at the escalate the us should take steps in order to to put aside their armada from our region. And also move a very from economic. Warfare. Against ceding and people. Senior white house adviser jared kush there spearheaded the socalled deal of the century just before flying to bahrain he spoke to aljazeera and said hes confident that the conference will be a success but i think its already been a success in the sense that we have every country coming from the region we have a lot of countries coming from throughout the world despite people who tried to get them not to come theyre all coming and thats a very big 1st step i think we all have to recognize that if there ever is a deal its not going to be along the lines of the Arab Peace Initiative will be somewhere between the Arab Peace Initiative and somewhere between the israeli position and we need to think about what are the fundamental things that are underlying important to want to security right i think the israeli population and the palestinian population and the broader middle east right now cares a lot about have security the more you have security the more you could have freer flow of goods for flow of people i know thats a very big issue for the palestinians they want to be able to move through the borders. Scientists claim that the planet is witnessing a mass extinction. In response a Worldwide Movement is now underway to rewire the countryside to restore land to native one in the city at the tip of south america succeeding all expectations. I have come to but i wanted to meet chris and after bass was dedicated the best to that gets to the protection of this area the conservation projects he started with the husband doug has become a true inspiration to those who believe the wilderness can heal itself to even have a chance. But i wont miss a bus 3. You know mountains and forest spanning seldom chile and argentina. Though famous for its a stunning landscapes for center a seat has been an important region for livestock farming and many of its grasslands have been graced bare. At the regions hot lights Patagonia National park. And here to find out how this became one of the biggest conservation projects in history. And you know well i think here him am im chris how can one of your little deal. Former c. E. O. Of Elder Company but they go into priest marry doug tomkins and interplay newer and ive been through who had founded rival brand the north face. Both fronts made them by your mentor protections central to their Company Ethos but chris and doug wanted to do more from the early ninetys bought over 300000000. 00 u. S. Dollars of land for preservation across chile and argentina they build parks complete with largest campgrounds and trails to support a good story some after dark side in their in 10 to 15 carried the mantle as president of their foundation thompkins conservation what was it you saw here may you take a listen if you know things you know the next 20 years. I didnt see it frankly that thats the one side. He saw a landscape that was beat up and miles of fence line to take down and that convinced me this was the conservation chance of a lifetime. In 2004 in the. Crease and dog bought this sheep ranch of almost 200000 acres of overgrazed grassland they set about returning it to me to along with the harmful of smaller farms using a process called rewilding rewilding is the restoration of an entire ecosystem to its natural state by removing foreign species reintroducing and protecting native ones it begins with the removal of livestock the biggest they seem to flourish this encourages insects and overly learned most attracting birds and other small predators removing fences allows the return of therapy forces which are preyed on by a picks predators those at the top of the food chain which then also multiply. Species in critically low numbers totally absent or rehabilitated ultimately free and predator populations regulate one another and the ecosystem evolves into a by a long term selfsustaining wilderness. When we bought this property there were probably 500 miles of fence line. That needed to come down and when you take the fences down you see wildlife coming back and because for 80 years its been excluded from the best grasses prices are to keep wildlife. Out of the best grasses and keeping your lifestyle and the best. So its very exciting to see the grasslands and the forests begin to restore our selves and thats the joy of taking fences down. One on the most benefiting from this grass is that when i call those relatives of the llama and a keystone species that is one that plays a crucial role in the functioning of the ecosystem. Not often you see one by itself theyre pretty emblematic of the paragon ian step if theyre plentiful and theyre calm like this heinous then you know that the system is coming back and that they feel no threats course and thats where. I want to see what rewilding looks like up close and. Kristen so still the parts they rector of conservation has agreed to show me. A spin a guiding hand on the rewinding process since the parts beginning so no one knows the flora and fauna here better than him. On route and we bump into a few of the locals. But. In some way they were not. Part of the community for a course of this park. The pygmy old present small birds rodents and in 6th a thriving healthy grassland. Takes me 2 years of the park where it borders on a working ranch difference in the grass on either side he says striking. Here is a good example of what happened in one place where you removed the livestock and one place where landowners decide to put more livestock than their land is able to support in terms of food. So the consequence is that you last division and you see the composition of the plant trees different so if you have livestock permanently eating the grass they dont have the chance to release the feed and their recovery phase low theres some consequence like erosion that is very hard to address and it will take over destined to be really recall her. On the eastern edge of the park at least in the team have established a Breeding Center for. Us to reach darwins riya. Baited and brought here to a climatized before being released. Really. Strongly associated with. Going in a big grassland so i grassland without the real complete. Main purpose of. The captive population is providing in the. Population the main issue here. Relation was so. Less than 20. The World Population of rio made it by hunting and the destruction of their hobby but is now slowly growing and successfully was person here from a very year that have been released then youll see that there is a line of fans right now we are removing it and that we prove they cannot be barriers that have been released to be me with their wild greer we are now in the 3rd generation and we are planning to keep this Program Running the next 35 years when we are made that we can read up with relation of about 100 birthing there while. The tiny the growing real population will in turn help sustain their only natural predator and the species and most excited to see they lose the king of patagonia. And come to meet their former herd there and hunter. He and others in the area used to keel over tend. To protect their communities flocks. For the. Fair. I know i. Am but. You know words are so wide like word and and its the parts risk too much trucking expert if anyone can find the opal my team. But out of. The kindness of their 1st. And only have only one of course im going to wear you. And i want you to give us one for my i mean i mean and i said ok and i said ok. Well you know what im more real but i dont have any. Woman. We dont need any money to afford. To see this man hath of the land i can see there that he can distinguish. Anywhere here who most prefer to hunt at night and our chances of seeing one are very slim so were doing the next best thing sitting a camera on the team used to monitor their activity. When i wanted one of the men they like and it was clear that. They come over here. Both because youre in jail. Should grow into most curious that another cut post being here. Were going to leave this camera top for a few days and see whether we get lucky. It may be hard to actually see a pool but for crease their return credit reports and predators have been systematically persecuted for decades and decades so their numbers get precariously love every ecosystem has whats called their apex species here in patagonia its promise and if you take out the very top predator everything cascades down from that. Comes out of order even though its early here in the park in terms of rebalancing we can see some big changes where there are Water Systems to grasslands are definitely coming back the number of pulis in the park and the numbers of what not goes in the park foxes but the success comes when all of those species are truly back in a system thats functioning without human intervention. As well as helping to clean air and water large expanses of forest and also naturally sequester carbon a crucial way to meet again Climate Change. This bridge generating forest also play host to a tree too so rare its almost mythic and its rehabilitation could be the parts biggest challenge. To wildlife rangers have promised to help me find it. Again. But only in the nearly anyone. Perfect but then again i want to run over arthur did i dont know part of it when will it get any when i am gone and i will not use. The needle trucks will move here you seem to limit 3 other decks radio frequencies to meet in from callers on the beer. When i thought we were. Taught in. A simple moment that there were no. Perfect and they were. Not. And i think i have 30. Yeah. How did that destruction and poaching have brought the sometimes colder style than the and dear to the brink of extinction. There are fewer than 2000 left in the wide just one percent of their original population look them in chile and argentina. But i. Honestly love it i like it enough for nothing and the man on the ferry for the day you. Make a hairy man turn a. Reform on a little boy. In the end. And i was. Just. Really close to him a. Now to find a computer cannot come. Out of there going to. Keep. Going to one of the very beginning of. The nearly invites me back to his family home to meet his wife. Their family comes from a long line of go chose ranching people found the cross but they go in here who are often fiercely proud of their way of life many go in the nearby community of cochrane conservation as a threat to both their livelihoods and their culture. The neon worked on the old ranch a shepherd for 6 years before taking a job conserving wool in the park to replace the. Chopper come from. You know. Sort of think. That. You can have this is. One. Of. The fellas fancier neither of us has had but. For. Those who still ranching also complained that must leave the park to peel their livestock. 16 people working on the ranch when it was closed then employed at the park 8 of them a spark wardens like the near. By 2018 the park employ more than 90 people during high season meanwhile 2 recent has created sustainable sources of income for local populations this was truly an emblematic ranch so just the image this region shifts when the land use shifts and that was really hard on people which i completely understand i would hate to have this area be 100 percent tourism the culture would fracture the structure of society would begin to fall apart and thats what im interested in im interested in working ranches alongside conservation areas so theres dignity and health on both sides. But when chris and doug started buying land local grievances were just the beginning. Some chileans said it was the us. A plot to control the countrys whether. The state. The duncans also infuriated conservatives when they joined the Popular Campaign to stop a giant dam project near the park. But theyre high profile role in the movement in which thousands took to the street forcing the government to reject the project one of the many admirers across chile. One way there from nation hopes to contribute to local communities while also convincing them of the benefits of conservation is through a free you creation program. Lena is leading a school group from the nearby several minutes of going. On a 2 day trip in villages yet they can use it all to the land of need but the musical the music of the overtaking we have also take. A look at why that. Is about them its just an excellent lexs unit get to north of us who cover us as it is obvious. Quite. Fond of. The years on the. In and out of the 30. 3 men the men the senior and if you get i need a Company Getting any of the income then im ok come get it come. To me busy. Turn the letter cheek ok another listener. I want to sell a glass and he can take. Its a loan you got me into both of us are going to be very good they said. When i say what im waiting for. So. You know you have until in the. Summer yet despite living in the countryside for some of these kids their 1st name counting in the wild. Fighting youre going to get an idea. Done. On monday. The one on the phone with a little girl she knew. Im meeting up with her to check out come in a trap. We have heard that the bomb has been spotted with the carcass of a when i go and go to check it out. To get in here get him to get there but if. The. Critter youll get all that icky. Which youre not going to dont let on. He. Definitely i think a lot of and i sure dont and im. Sure he said im not a kid but. They will put out on what he said all of us had. Assumed. Just given us so that. You know. Were not going to save us and you know youre. A lunatic you know. No luck this time but that stevie on the team have used camera traps to look you meant over 35. To must now resident in the park. With balance returning the donkeys foundation feels ready to do what they have always done with their parks the native to the state in a 28000. 00 signing ceremony with them presley and michelle bestially trees handed over to the east and another park worth a combined 1000000 acres it was billed as the biggest donation of private land to a state least ery. The chilean government also contributed 9000000 acres of their own oil this land now forms 5 new National Parks and expand 3 others an area 3 times bigger than yellowstone and yosemite combined. This. The rudolph parts a scenic road 1700 miles long connecting 17 parks across chile boosting the economies of the communities on route. Right now just another 2 days facilities are closed down until the handover process is complete so the whole team theyre all saying goodbye to one another and its not like hell be back next year. Yet its sad. Listen for yourself her dog died. And seen their dream finally become a reality you support in a moment. Here is. The day that doug died he was on a kayaking trip with our best friends and they got caught out. A severe westerly when they were getting pushed farther and farther out into the center of the lake and so they decided to abandon the kayak and try to swim to shore. And it was just too much. It was in the water for over 2 hours and they got him to his helicopter to hospital and clinic and somehow the word spread so fast. Had either died or was in trouble and as we drove to the hospital people were. Taking their hard hats off and opening. It was so amazing really thought. It was extraordinary anyway we got so. I can die 20 minutes before so. Soon after dogs there she List National congress voted to make him an honorary citizen it was an official recognition both of the top contribution to the countrys Natural Heritage and of how much the public have come to be braced and what a life. Heres a guy who had no limitations. You know youre so easily stopped by things that are difficult or seemingly impossible. With some plans to many people you know. I or we leave behind a legacy of if you dont establish some sort of value system that awards peace between human and nonhuman. Well never get where we need to go. Im using my final evening in the park to take a proper hike the only way to truly appreciate this particular place. I feel so lucky to have had the towns to be said one of the few remaining great wilderness of the word experience has shown me just so precious this ecosystems are and how easily they can be used for human activity whether thats also giving me hope to see that these craft once a forest have been revived to welcome back the amazing creatures that once called them home. Cold this is aljazeera. Fully backed this is a news hour live from our headquarters in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes a lot of restraint. That doesnt mean were going to show it in the future and warning from donald trump along with new sanctions which target iran Supreme Leader. We want to show people is that there is a Great Potential a great future for white house Senior Adviser jared tells aljazeera his economic conference upon a stimulus will be a success despite widespread anger against it also this hour as ethiopia mourns the victims of a failed coup the man behind the rebellion is killed by Security Forces and how mexican women are being disproportionately targeted in the war against trucks. Thank you very much for joining us u. S. President donald trump has imposed what hes calling hard hitting new sanctions on irans leadership as tensions continue to build in the region the measures go all the way up to the Supreme Leader ayatollah ali how many aiming to block access to Financial Resources and the u. S. Financial system and response irans foreign minister mohammed java zarif has accused the trumpet ministration of having no interest in diplomacy and a thirst for war meanwhile u. S. Secretary of state michael impale has been decided to arabia and the United Arab Emirates trying to build a Global Coalition against iran my kind of begins our coverage with this report from washington. As promised another round of sanctions against iran these in addition to a number already put in place and directed at the countrys most Senior LeadersPresident Trump did not elaborate on the precise nature of the sanctions apart from saying that they would bar the leaders from access to Financial Instruments i want to thank our military i want to thank all of the people that have been working with me over the last number of months on this think a lot of restraint has been shown by us a lot of restraint. And that doesnt mean were going to show in the future no complete details provided by the treasury secretary either but speedman did confirm that some of the sanctions are a direct response to last weeks attack on a u. S. Drone iran contended the drone had penetrated its space an accusation denied by the u. S. Im not going to identify which ones for which ive said that some of this was in the works some of this is a result of recent activities deep concern once again expressed by the u. N. Secretary general he has urged all sides to show nerves of steel and he is continuing to maintain that and he wants to make sure that they. Take steps to avoid any further sorts of of provocation one way or the other the u. S. Is ramping up its diplomatic actions against iran the secretary of state shuttling through several gulf states including saudi arabia to shore up a wide anti Iran Alliance but at the same time a carrot of sorts being extended with the stick the white house releasing a statement saying the president has been clear that hes open to the possibility of future talks with iran mike hanna aljazeera washington but not to another of our correspondents in washington john hendren john tell us more about this latest u. S. Sanctions on iran. Fully previous rounds of sanctions have targeted iran as a nation but this round is personal quite literally personal as you mention it goes on up to the Supreme Leader of the country could also targets his office its pacifically targets 8 military leaders including the leader who was believed to have been responsible for shooting down that American Global hawk drone last thursday so these are financial sanctions that are being intended to bar those individuals from using the International Banking system and that comes on the heels of sanctions previous sanctions that aimed to bar the company from profiting from its vast oil reserves President Trump has really softened his tone hes talking diplomacy now rather than some kind of military attack and speaking to a reporter over the weekend he said we do not seek conflict with iran or any other country but he said i can only tell you we cannot ever let iran have a Nuclear Weapons so those sanctions are personal and the Pressure Campaign goes on following yet and the u. S. Administration has sent senior official serai allies in this Pressure Campaign against iran how are they going about that. Thats right theres really a striking a ray of senior official you saw that we had our own interview with jared questioner but john bolton was in jerusalem talking to israeli leaders might pompei of the secretary of state is going to the United Arab Emirates into saudi arabia brian hookers the u. S. Special representative for iran and hes been to 4 Different Countries oman saudi arabia the u. A. E. Kuwait all trying to rally support for an anti iran Pressure Campaign and later on in the week as everybody gears up for the g. 20 meeting in osaka where President Trump himself will be there u. S. Officials tell us that theyre going to be making the case that since 60 percent of the oil that goes through the strait of hormuz where this drone was shot down goes to asia they will be trying to drum up support among asian leaders telling them this is not a middle eastern problem this is not a u. S. Problem it is a global problem and it affects you and thats part of their sales pitch thank you for that john hendren live for us in washington irans foreign minister mohammed jobs every fall also be added to the new u. S. Sanctions list in the coming days his dosage of barry with the reaction from tehran. The announcement out by the end of this week of the rein in foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif will be sanctioned by the u. S. Government comes as a surprise here in iran this person moments of azari physical arrear diplomat who has lived in the United States was at the United Nations for many many years and he is known as the face of the Islamic Republic on the International Stage she is that shovelled all around the world and met with many many diplomats he is very well known on that level every so this decision is very much a surprise many analysts say here this is one of the most surprising decisions by the trumpet ministration in the meantime the decision to. Sanction the iranian Supreme Leader will likely not have much effect the Ayatollah Khomeini has not left iran in over 30 years since he was president in 1909 the last time he left around was on a state visit china in april of 1989 the commanders that have been sanctioned as well will not really be much affected by this decision many here believe this an ounce meant shows how desperate the United States is in trying to get iran to the negotiating table but many believe this is actually going to have the opposite effect and create further divisions and tensions between the United States and iran now russia is calling the new u. S. Sanctions illegal and says it will take steps to counter the measures that boston has more from moscow. Russias Deputy Foreign minister ripped off has said that any new u. S. Sanctions are counterproductive and will only increase tensions and he also said that russia wants to take countermeasures together with its partners its not clear and he did not specify what kind of countermeasures he means and also if his European Partners agree with this on friday the deputy minister of sab that russia wants to help iran with its oil exports and also with its Banking System and he has been disappointed about the fact that this european system that designed currently to avoid the u. S. Sanctions and help iran with oil exports is still not going anywhere and he said that the European Partners are fairly under so much pressure of the United States that this is not going to going to go anywhere so thats where russia wants to stab in but again is this is syrias intention or is this a threat this is still not clear of has been very aggressive and very firm on the on the u. S. Sanctions towards iran and also on any steps that the u. N. United states has taken towards iran all the u. N. Security council is calling on all sides to exercise restraint and avoid any further escalation its also condemned the talents on oil tankers in the persian gulf earlier this month the u. S. Blamed on but tehran denies any involvement from u. N. Headquarters in new york alan fisher has this report. Theres been a common theme from the diplomats at the u. N. One aid about growing friction between the u. S. And iran i think has a lot. To see deescalation and to look for Diplomatic Solutions this is a closed door meeting of the Security Council was to discuss the recent attacks on shipping in the gulf but the americans also briefed the council about the doning of its by joined by the iranians last week. But there was no place at the table for the Iranian Ambassador to the country not come with a member of the council today the council is being briefed unilaterally by one party the u. S. Who is abusing its position as the councils permanent member to misguide this body in order to advance its anti iran policy and well donald trump says hes open to negotiations with the iranians the Ambassador Says new sanctions make that imports that as long as this threat is is there that hes no very that iran and the u. S. Trying to start a dialogue with the u. S. Says it presented clear evidence iran was behind the attacks on shipping and that its true and was an International Air space the coordinates of the drones flight path and location which i shared with the council make clear that the aircraft at no point entered iranian airspace irans claims to the contrary are false and rely on an argument that the u. S. Aircraft was in irans flight Information Age but a countrys flight information region is not the same as their space the Security Council will be talking iran again in the coming days this time the Iran Nuclear Deal there are many on the council who still support it the u. S. Has pulled out and wants others to do the same theres a lot of talk here about deescalation and negotiation over the coming dispute but theres very little sign of it and there is a windy that the next thing between the u. S. And iran will be the catalyst for something much worse alan fischer aljazeera at the u. N. In new york. I saw speak to jarett blancos a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace he was a Senior State Department official under president obama who oversaw implementation of the Iran Nuclear Deal hes live from washington thank you so much for being with us on aljazeera so you over so sanctions implementations under president obama are these additional measures against iran imposed by the ton but ministration useful at all in your view i dont think that todays announcement is particularly practical the individuals and institutions that have been designated for sanctions are almost certainly fully insulated from the International Financial system already so i dont see this as having any particular way to crimp their style this is rather a symbolic step and the the problem thought is not that its symbolic and of itself its good to send messages the problem is that the messages that the administration is sending are more likely to lead to escalation than to deescalation sanctions on the Supreme Leader on the foreign minister zarif in a few days whos the face of iran on the International Stage what does it achieve really you talk about symbolism but is it going to have an impact at all with any iran. Well i think that the same sions on the Supreme Leader does office are almost certainly to be to be read in iran as confirmation that this administration is pursuing a regime change policy even if President Trump denies it and even if other officials dont use that phrase what is targeting the leadership of the regime other than regime change so thats clearly negative symbolism as regards foreign minister zarif you know 1st of all hes the regimes negotiator so if youre saying we want to talk sanctioning the lead negotiator probably sends a strange message more than that i find it very unlikely that even our closest allies and partners are going to follow through with this of jobs reforms to go to paris to talk to our our allies will be able to rent a hotel room well be able to get cash to pay for his dinner is however the case may be it will really show the extent of u. S. Isolation jetlag its confusing indeed to understand what the u. S. Administration is trying to do i mean stepping back from military action just a few days ago the president says he wants to avoid a war but his policies say otherwise why these actions now you think well i think youre exactly right there is it incoherence to this policy the president says and i tend to believe that hes not looking for a war in the middle east but perhaps because he really doesnt track the details of the situation and hes hired people who arent diplomats but arsonists and has allowed them to run a very very aggressive policy the administration is increasingly cornered into a position where it feels obliged to respond to it for tat and its responses i think are becoming more and more likely to turn aggressive or military if the u. S. Are also trying to get support from saudi arabia the u. A. E. They want to build this coalition and we know that the russians have said theyll counter these new u. S. Sanctions on iran how much she think this is going to aggravate the tensions between washington and moscow. Well you know with with with regard to the gulf its a funny thing because of course theyve been pressuring the United States to take a harder line on iran i suspect that theyre also not prepared for an actual regional comfort ition that draws in u. S. And Iranian Military forces and so its actually its a measure of how weak the the u. S. His position is that pump aoe has got to go and beg for support from the countries that have been pushing us as regards russia you know again i dont think that these specific sanctions are particularly important or practical which means that russias promise of practical assistance in response is probably kind of empty you are right though that it it provides another opportunity for russia to present an alternative model of Global Leadership now if there is no where else to go pressure wise as it seems to be the case now with these new sanctions it seems to be really even the last stage is the only option left a military one is that going to be the next step in your view thats certainly my concern i mean its not the only option left there is a much better option which is to deescalate the situation but in less the trumpet ministration or president himself decides on that prudent course its hard to see how many more tit for tat responses washington will have available short of using military force very fast on this thank you so much for joining us jarrett bank is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace live there from washington thank you for your time. And the standoff between the u. S. And iran and the conflict in syria are likely to dominate a rare 3 way meeting between the u. S. Israel and russia being how dangerous them on tuesday early on monday israels Prime Minister held talks with russias Security Council secretary who will represent his country during tuesdays discussions position on regional issues have been at odds with those of the u. S. Bennett smith has this update from west jerusalem this was a long meeting between israel and russia to discuss syria primarily iranian involvement in syria israel of course determined to stop iran building any sort of military bases in his or to prevent foothold in syria israels military has previously destroyed attempts by around to build bases in syria. I would like to say in the clearest way that is really russian cooperation on the security level this cooperation has already contributed plenty to the security and stability in our region it significantly changed the situation in the area on choose day the u. S. National security adviser john bolton joins in the discussions again primarily to talk about iran when this meeting was shed jule the american said that this was an unprecedented diplomatic opportunity for discussions on syria and iran involvement in the region in the wider region although russias foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has previously said that trying to curb irans influence in syria and the middle east is unrealistic. Well as many as have always there is action to them and im a summit that this expected to be held tomorrow they say that the road to solving the palestinian israeli conflict is not through economic means and they said that palestine is not for sale. In a recent poll 80 percent of palestinians say that they dont believe the u. S. Plan will lead them to statehood or that the u. S. Is serious about its efforts felicity and president Mahmoud Abbas said that while economy is important and foreign aid is important the most important story here is political the Palestinian Authority has stopped engaging with the u. S. Ever since the Us Administration has moved its embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem announcing jerusalem as israels capital and gaza hamas has also rejected the deal and palestinians there have organized a marathon against it saying that the minimum workshop wont be a success. This is one of the many protests that that had p. L. O. Factions have pulled over in the west bank that are expected to last then when they were just the 2nd hand kind of the. On the Palestinian Group hamas which governs gaza has described the conference in bahrain as a conspiracy nor the goal of about if we declare our rejection of the deal of the century and the bahrain conference we pledged to work to abort this conspiracy we emphasize the arab nature of jerusalem and palestine and the right to refugees to return to the land from which they were driven out of all before trying to bahrain senior white house adviser jared cushion a spokesman and said he is confident the conference will be a success so i think its already been a success in the sense that we have every country coming from the region we have a lot of countries coming from throughout the world despite people who tried to get them not to come theyre all coming and thats a very big 1st step the 2nd step is that weve been able to get some of the top investors and people from throughout the world to come who are showing interest in helping the Palestinian People in the region right now. Weve a lot of Investment Funds that wont invest in the middle east because its not stable they dont have peace they dont have security and so we want to show people is that there is a Great Potential a great future for this region if its possible well lets further discuss question as mideast peace plan with Max Blumenthal whos an author and editor of the gray zone project dot com an online news website hits via skype from new york thank you very much max so being with us on aljazeera. The palestinian leadership opposes this plan jordan a u. S. Ally and an israeli and ill poses it is this conference going to be a success or a failure in your opinion well its already a failure the palestinian leadership which was created through plan of the oslo accords participated willingly in a process that would have granted them a minimal logic above sovereignty and offered them a pseudo state and what we have here is not even a plan b. What we have is plan bibi as offered by netanyahu is Friends Family friend Jared Kushner and i suspect that jarrett cushion or and his gaggle have all teary or motives motives here what theyve offered is a plan that dealings the Economic Situation of palestinians from the political situation of occupation and apartheid which is responsible for their economic plight and what i think cushion or aims to do is present something so unpalatable that hill have the opportunity to pay palestinians as rejectionists care by clearing political space for an extension that was going to be my next question to you in fact i mean the plan focuses at least the one that the leaks that weve seen so far only on Economic Conditions in the palestinian territories and not on knowing political questions about saito good and much of it is said to be based on previous u. Aid plans what is ultimately again the objective if its doomed for failure as many people think it is is it all about strengthening thats now is position and allowing him perhaps to an extent by the west bank. Yeah absolutely i mean weve heard u. S. Ambassador to israel who i would consider the us israeli reciprocal ambassador David Friedman whos actually a settler dangle the prospect of an extension already in this seems to be the objective the conference has already been downgraded to a workshop egypt and jordan are sending their lowest possible level officials and this will inevitably end up in failure but failure for jarrett cushion or might mean a success that justifies an extension by strengthening the thing yahoos hand and saying hey the palestinians rejected all of this Economic Opportunity but of course its Economic Opportunity that doesnt relieve the political pain of occupation that has cost palestinians on told billions of dollars theres also the question of funding max do you think gulf countries will pay for this plan and how will it be implemented what were already seeing i would say a shyness among the gulf countries even though they might actually particularly saudi arabia and the u. A. E. The on board with jared cushion his program theyre shy about fully endorsing it and so getting them to basically displace the costs of the occupation and apartheid it might actually be impossible again i think gerry cushion or has all teary or motives here and that this plan is actually political leverage on behalf of his family friend netanyahu and the Settlement Movement in israel which seeks an exception in the Jordan Valley the one around the mega settlement of mali atomium and arielle maximun found very good stuff too thank you so much for joining us and im just there thanks for having me. Growing up in the United States i learned that the 1st amendment is really key to being a distance in freedom of the soldiers going to be enough to leave men and women to the resources that are available what makes an aljazeera story unique is that we just told to tell you what the subject of the story wants you to know the government is not going to do the one thing the demonstrators want to apologize for dallas what aljazeera does we ask the questions so that we can get closer to the truth. Theyre watching the news on aljazeera with me back to remind of our top stories the u. S. Has also defended the right of the United States to recognized them as the capital of israel. Recognizing israels capital is true islam has been law in the United States since 1906 it was passed unanimously israels a sovereign nation a sovereign nation as the. Right to determine where their capital is and america has the right to recognize the decision of another sovereign nation which is what we chose to do that is a promise the president kept another promise the president kept us to get out of the j c p a way the iran deal which has been a terrible deal which has caused a lot of destruction throughout the region another promise the president made is that he would destroy isis and take back the caliphate hes done that too so the president s kept his promises that impact people throughout the region with regard to the Palestinian People when the president moved the embassy to jerusalem he said that this should not impact final status negotiations issues weve been working very carefully on a very deep hill proposal for what we think could help bring this conflict which has been stuck forward and were hopeful that well be able to put that out soon and hopefully parties will be responsible theyll gauge on it and theyll try to move forward. The u. S. Government has moved more than 300 Migrant Children being held at a remote Border Patrol center in the state of texas it follows reports that they had inadequate food water and sanitation lawyers who visited the station in the town of clinton say older children were trying to take care of infants and toddlers some had been detained for 3 weeks and many were sick with the flu its not known where the children have been moved to meanwhile the number of people seeking political asylum in the European Union is rising again driven up by latin american refugees in the 1st 5 months of the year members of the European Free trade area received 290000 asylum applications an increase of 11 percent from 2018 the rise was partly caused by a surge in venezuelans and other not an american Asylum Seekers who are fleeing political and Economic Crises venezuelans notch more than 800000 applications that makes them the nationality with the 2nd highest number of applications in europe after syrians earlier we spoke to matthew a salt marsh a spokesperson for the Un Refugee Agency my colleague Barbara Starr asked him why many venezuelan migrants are choosing to come to europe. Well as you know the situation in venezuela is extremely serious in recent years 4000000 people have fled the country now the majority of those are in neighboring countries next to venezuela and many of them are able to go their own visas or temporary arrangement so they havent actually claimed asylum although a significant number have Something Like 340000 last year but of course there could be reasons why venezuelans would want to go to europe particularly Spanish Speaking countries spain in particular has had an increase 20000 we mated last year applied for asylum in spain so of course people flee for safety wherever they can ok so clear to see why a lot of asylum applications have come from venezuela where else in latin america has have we seen a spike of up occasions from what the other major situation in that region is whats known as the northern triangle countries like honduras guatemala and el salvador and we estimate that 600000 people have fled those countries in recent years again theyre primarily thing in the region some of them have tried to go to the u. S. Has been well documented and the reason theyre fleeing is primarily because of gang related violence people of fearing for their safety those human rights abuses a rifle at home so thats the reason why theyre leaving those countries. More than 3000. 00 women are in prison or being processed in mexico for low level drug offenses. Gabby was arrested for selling in transporting marijuana and is now serving a 10 year sentence she says she had no other way of making a living and wasnt expecting such a harsh punishment but i did it out of necessity because of poverty where im from theres no other income. Where im from selling marijuana is like selling bride while mexicos antidrug laws are aimed at dismantling the countrys cartels human rights advocates say theyre also having a disproportionate impact on poor women and that around the law had a combat role as when we talk about the drug war many people think of el chapo they dont realize that normally those who are punished are at the bottom of the pyramid women who have been discriminated against or have been victims of violence. It only took a couple of clicks on the keyboard to change my image into that of lattimer putin and we go inside the world of deep faked videos and look at their implications for politicians and elections. U. S. President donald trump has imposed what hes calling hard hitting new sanctions on irans leadership the measures go all the way up to the Supreme Leader ayatollah ali how many tehran has condemned them wolf saying the u. S. Has no interest in diplomacy mike hanna has our report from washington. Mike hanna aljazeera washington of the u. N. Security council is calling on all sides to exercise restraint and avoid any further escalation irans ambassador to the u. N. Says the situation in the gulf remains dangerous and as well the talks with washington while tehran remains under sanctions the question should be addressed to the United States who has initiated an economic war against iran who has initiated an economic. Turn ism against Syrian People at the same time the United States has has brought a large number of feeds into our region naval armada is in our region saw in order to at the escalated the u. S. Should take the steps in order to to put aside their armada from our region and pull and also move a very from economic. Warfare. Against seating and people. The u. S. Is planning more sanctions in the coming days anyones foreign minister is expected to be among those blacklisted dosage of barry has reaction from tehran. The announcement that by the end of this week could be reined in foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif will be sanctioned by the Us Government comes as a surprise here in iran this person mom which of us a reef is a career diplomat who has lived in the United States he was at the United Nations for many many years and he is known as the face of the Islamic Republic on the International Stage that traveled all around the world and met with many many diplomats he is very well known on that level every so this decision is very much a surprise many analysts say here this is one of the most surprising decisions by the trumpet ministration in the meantime the decision to sanction the iranian Supreme Leader will likely not have much effect the Ayatollah Khomeini has not left iran in over 30 years since he was president in 1909 the last time he left around was on a state visit china in april of 1989 the commanders that have been sanctioned as well will not really be much affected by this decision many here believe this announcement shows how desperate the United States is in trying to get iran to the negotiating table but many believe this is actually going to have the opposite effect and create further divisions and tensions between the United States and iran or russia has called the new sanctions illegal and says it will take steps to counter the measures that boston has more from moscow. S. Sanctions and help iran with oil exports is still not going anywhere and you said that the European Partners are fairly under so much pressure of the United States that this is not going to going to go anywhere so thats where russia wants to stab in but again is this is syrias intention or is this a threat this is still not clear of has been very aggressive and very firm on the on the u. S. Sanctions towards iran and also on any steps that the u. N. United states has taken towards iran. As is director of the iran project at the International Crisis group he says a mixed signals coming from washington could escalate the situation even further. There seems to be a Clear Division fissure within the Top Administration in the sense that the president is primarily interested in reaching a better and broader deal with iran but no one in his National Security team shares that objective and in fact thats why the trumpet ministrations iran policy i think is on a collision course with itself in the sense that the president wants to avoid a war but his policy is leading us towards the war every escalation is bringing us closer to a brink of an escalation that could result in a catastrophic military clash and i dont think the president would be able to achieve a negotiated solution with this cast of characters that are currently surrounded them they run ins have a lot of experience of living under sanctions and theyre quite resilient however this time u. S. Sanctions have proven to be much more effective that the dissipated and the situation might be sustainable in the short run but it is not in the medium to long term and thats why the run ins have put aside their maximum patience policy that they implemented during the 1st year of the trumpet ministrations maximum pressure strategy and now are starting to push back theyre starting to roll back some of their commitments under the nuclear deal theyre starting to push back in the region and again the problem by the iranian policy of imposing a cost on the u. S. Administration is that it actually increases tensions and the risk of an inadvertent conflict in the region. And the walls have taken base across the palestinian territories as anger grows against use economic conference in bahrain white house Senior Adviser is leading the 2 Day Initiative is expected to reveal more details of the socalled deal of the century for the region protesters in the occupied west bank and images of the king of bahrain and one angry gaza residents stressed says former p. L. O. Leader Yasser Arafat brandished a gun at several burning images of us present on a shop. My car so those are good and the returning fathers. Are siloed look awesome. Job of. Jumo though. Ill just need a brain has been to one of the protests in the occupied west bank and has this report from ramallah. Palestinians have always their judgment to them and im a summit that this expected to be held tomorrow they say that the road to solving the palestinian israeli conflict is not through economic means and they said that palestine is not for sale. In a recent poll 80 percent of palestinians say that they dont believe the u. S. Plan will lead them to statehood or that the u. S. Is serious about its efforts to listen in president Mahmoud Abbas said that while the economy is important and foreign aid is important the most important story here is political the Palestinian Authority has stopped engaging with the u. S. Ever since the Us Administration has moved its embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem announcing jerusalem as israels capital and gaza hamas has also rejected the deal and palestinians there have organized a marathon against it saying that the minimum workshop will be a success. The one a little over many brought it down but then and p. L. O. Factions have pulled over in the west bank that are expected to last then when they were just the 2nd hand point of the number. Are before frying to bahrain jarryd cushnie spoke to the air and said hes confident the conference will be a success so i think its already been a success in the sense that we have every country coming from the region we have a lot of countries coming from throughout the world despite people who tried to get them not to come theyre all coming and thats a very big 1st step the 2nd step is that weve been able to get some of the top investors and people from throughout the world to come who are showing interest in helping the palestinian. People in the region right now with a lot of Investment Funds that wont invest in the middle east because its not stable they dont have peace they dont have security and so we want to show people that there is a Great Potential a great future for this region if its possible and i suspect to jamey pressman who joins us live on skype from connecticut hes an associate professor of Political Science and director of middle east studies at the university of connecticut thank you so much for being with us on this conference really be a success says Jared Kushner trains i dont think if we measure success in terms of changing the palestinian israeli relationship in terms of advancing the falls then incurs but i dont think theres any reason for optimism if there is no reason for optimism then whats happened what happens next whats the u. S. Administration hoping to achieve there those who say that this will strengthen its now his position and push him to annex more parts of the occupied west bank do you share that view i think its possible but obviously netanyahu right now is wrapped up in another Election Campaign so probably not likely in the next few months i think from the administrations perspective there are officials who deal with the israel our stein issue dont really believe in the notion of an independent palestine as a as part of a 2 state solution they dont believe in equal rights for the palestinians they dont believe that theres an occupation going on so if those are your beliefs it kind of limits that kind of proposal that you can for forward and so on i understand for the ministration that has those beliefs why go on an economic route might be appealing yeah and the plan that focuses on it on the Economic Conditions in the palestinian territories as far as what we see in any way and not on the questions of political off statehood and so on and much of it is said to be based on previous usaid plans do you think you know theres going to be anything that comes out of it. Well i think theres one thing that cricket you know people have been focused on which is important to note that the administer the u. S. Administration doesnt understand in the language of the report that palestinians dream of a Better Future so at least on some very deep fundamental level they understand that the problem is you know you can throw around ideas like gaza should be the next dubai or singapore gaza doesnt even have an airport so without dealing with kind of the basics its very hard to move forward and economics now if we think about why gaza didnt have an airport ultimately thats a political question right that something because the needs of the egyptian the israelis have to figure out its not something that you can just say well investors like you and therefore to come to fruition and theres also the important question all funding and the Trump Administration is hoping that gulf countries will step up and you know help pay for this plan do you think they will and when it be implemented ever. Well the conventional wisdom is that without some kind of progress on the political front investors will not step forward whether theyre investors from inside the arab world or outside of the arab world im willing to be open about that if if the next few days the Trump Administration can produce investors who say im willing to order millions or billions of dollars into the west bank and gaza would be great i dont think people expect their thank you so much for sharing it with us jamey pressman from the university of connecticut joining us there from connecticut thank you for your time. As well bangkok though very heavy rain in your forecast with a temperature of 33. 00 degrees and then as we make a way over here towards parts of india it is going to be more rain across the eastern seaboard the monsoon is finally kicking in very very delayed across much of the area but as you can see a lot of showers really popping up here for temperatures so we are looking at new delhi still quite high at 39. 00 degrees and that per rain in your forecast with a temperature of about 36. 00 for you. A major defeat for turkeys ruling party in istanbuls rerun of his Mayoral Election the countrys biggest city will now be ruled by the opposition for the 1st time in a quarter of a century so what are the consequences for president earlier on n b a k party this is inside story. Hello and welcome to the program im peter dalby it took a quarter of a century but opposition finally worked out how to defeat president wretch up type heard of one Republican Peoples Party candidate at cremona who has snatched election victory for a 2nd time and is mayor elect for istanbul a city that is long being governed by mr sake a party the president considers it decisive in shaping turkish politics and its kind of personal for him too it is his Political Base from where he began his korea as a mayor and missed him alone who is now seen by many as a rising challenger he struck a positive message during his campaign with the slogan everything will be fine but is that really true if were getting into the meat of our discussion reports now from istanbul. He stumbled changes hands for the 1st time since 1994 the main opposition c. S. P. Candidate. Has been elected mayor of the city in a controversial run thats has polarized and. Nation the 49 year old mayor was relatively unknown but has managed to win the backing of crucial allies such as the Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party the s. D. P. Stand. Im ready to work with the turkish president in harmony and i aspire to do that i am announcing that in front of all the residents of istanbul once the Legal Process is completed after receiving the men date and assuming the office i would like to visit and as soon as possible to present a road map and opinions and listen to his views. Remember all those weigh in is a major setback for ben ali yielded and former Prime Minister and a partys candidate for the Mayoral Election gilder is loss is widely interpreted here as an indication of a partys waning influence. According to the results as a now my competitors in the race i congratulate him and wish him good luck. All marsh 30 the 1st. 6 defeated his wife will by a narrow margin a Party Contest of the outcome claiming that some of the results werent ratified by Election Officials the higher election board ordered a reelection undeterred by the decision it. Held multiple rallies reminding his supporters of the victory was stolen by our party. Democracy has won just as has won people care about democracy i congratulate the future president of the country who told our ted barrett we increased our gains by having more votes from the uk Party Supporters which means there are also disgruntled. The new mayor faces the delicate task of running the countrys biggest wealthiest and most populous city but his supporters already see him as the right person to run against president of russia. In the 2023 president ial election although this is a local election its all to come as likely to shape the future of a party which faces a deepening crisis loyalists and people across the country all agree ad dollars ruling party has failed to fix the economy in tatters. Its the board. So what is the Republican Peoples Party well its the oldest party in turkey it was formed in 1923 by the founder of the turkish republic most of a kemal ataturk opposed to the conservative party the c. H. P. Promotes itself as a Secular Center left and social Democratic Movement the c. H. P. Mainly defines itself as a defender of socalled kamalas principles of republicanism and nationalism the c. H. P. Has managed to position itself as the Main Opposition Party in the Turkish Parliament its candidate what i mean she was president of the ones closest rival in last years president ial poll. Ok lets get going lets bring in the panel today here on inside story joining us from berlin is gallup the live visiting scholar at the university of oxford from ankara more of like a member of the Republican Peoples Party the c. H. P. And from brussels were talking to mark period formally the e. U. Ambassador to turkey gentlemen welcome to you all in ankara if i can come to you 1st mr ima moon who is on record now as saying this is a new beginning that sounds like a very big promise. Well seems so. But the thing is you know as a matter of fact. Getting 54 percent against bin ali in the room. Who has been supported by all the turkish state media. The state establishment the bureaucracy and everything and especially backed by by the president is really a huge thing you know its a wonderful. Threshold i would say and the political history of of the last 25 or 17 years from wherever you start whether it is the 1994 or 2002 when a. K. P. Stepped in but the thing is stumble has been or had been in the hands of. The arm and his Party Members for the last 24 years the 1st mayor being himself and now it has changed hands and as you may remember he was saying i mean the president of the republic was saying. Is stumble represents the whole of turkey. The overall population in turkey therefore whoever marry whomever wins istanbul will be ruling turkey is extremely important and actually exam day. It very moment has done exactly that so he won a great great victory a great victory there is a 9 percent difference between himself and be an ideal that him so this is indeed a threshold a new beginning. For the turkish politics paul politicians political life id say the law in berlin it is a huge pledge a huge promise can mr deliver on what he promised during 2 Election Campaigns. Well its best that we promise that were talking about you know or he is being elected as a mayor of is them will obviously not as many is not just is not confined to be the mayor of istanbul he has gotten a political meaning that is beyond stumble but nevertheless at this stage at an executive role that the role that he has in the liver the task that he has the liver is very much related to the istanbul so this is what we are going to see strong because i think like the government source the activities that the government what do is to try to work undermine him at the polls by increasing the power of the Municipal Council by increasing the power of the government appointed governor reserve is the mayor so this is like you know what we need to see but at this same time the question is what was it trying to model represent at this stage. His meaning as i said is what goals im trying to the mayor of these the more he clearly demonstrated that there is a growing back to looking back to the country the question is is it the candidate that will fill the vacuum or is it the candidate that opens the gate for the others to feel this vacuum as well too because i think with the election really wrong with the decision to rerun the election the governing party the president obama has taken a great risk by you know by turning this election as in a sense a referendum on the governments policy completely and therefore what has been the feed lot yesterday in istanbul is not giles candidates which is the benoliel that im. One of the 1st thing that in this about the government has to do is 1st correct to define what was defeated yesterday in istanbul obviously its not just that for the to become the mayor of istanbul what has been the fit is more than this is a style of a whole this is the nature of the governance that the country has been with has been experiencing is the populism that has been nationalist populism that the country has been experiencing so do answer would be well for the government will withdraw will draw the right lessons from this and also not only drawn the right lessons from the government or force the right responses to this to this defeat as well too because reducing this defeat to last or minutes but also will be mis understanding of it from the start ok lets put those points to mark here in brussels mark if you were still ambassador ping pong in between ankara and istanbul would you be telling your bosses in brussels in strasburg look politics in turkey has changed changed for the better and perhaps changed forever. I would tell them that things have changed but i wouldnt go too far and too soon essentially what weve seen yesterdays number one democratic resilience in istanbul and number 2 a sort of. Reluctance to continue is autocracy what has been defeated hes basically literacy so its a local election 20 percent of the population and one set of g. D. P. Its no small thing to be the mayor of istanbul if. My a. K. P. Into look at those in my days in aka would tell me old a dime if you compare you stumble to a european country this is somewhere in between the netherlands and belgium that is position number 9 so that is a big win for mr to himself he probably didnt expect these big a win but moving from such 100000 so team 1000 vote margin to nearly 800000 is a huge thing and this says essentially been engineered not so much by mr amano to itself but but by president ed on who as it was just said sort of transformed these miserable election into sort of referendum now im watching 2 Different Things and im sure the e. U. Here im sitting next to the European Council building in the back of me you see the open Commission Building theyre watching 2 Different Things one is that is the leadership in ancora going to let the Municipal Council of these them will work properly all will they invent new limits new financial regulations on Public Tenders for example things of that so that good genuinely limit the powers of mr and and the 2nd thing is given the rejection of president add ons style of politics which is going much for. Other than the stubble election will the president draw some lessons in terms of Economic Policy in terms of rule of law in terms of front policy and that we still have to see of course ok lets put that idea of Economic Policy tomorrow in ankara the Economic Policy to date as far as mr erdogan has has been concerned when hes turkish president has been you leverage your debt in u. S. Dollars thats always going to have a big impact on your currency a negative impact which its done youve got unemployment running at 19 or 20 percent on paper mr emote who has no skill set to run a country he may be able to run a city but running a country between now and when he decides maybe to go for the presidency in 2023 or if the election comes around before then thats a completely different game well let me put it this way. As of today. One of the main reasons why the turkish people i mean the people in istanbul have voted for. In a land style slide i would say as it has been 9 percent you know. Is the fact that we are also under an economic crisis as you have suggested the Unemployment Rate is extremely high and you know part from that the exports are down and the growth rate is very much down and this has you know all been because of the fact that out of the on has our president has lost credibility has caused lost credibility in the eyes of ignore and allow me to interrupt you there for a 2nd may dances that is in the manifesto that is the manifesto for the mayor mayor elect the mayoral candidate as was now the merrill act im trying to get you to tell us if he rides the wave of a unified c h p and he decides to stand for the presidency between now and 2023 what are his fiscal policies that will reverse what mr erdogan has done which is boral his way out of an economic recession which never works any place in the world never has never will. Well the thing is it is too were early to jump onto conclusions like that you know just legan besser there mark my dear friend told you but the point is there are 2 very important. Aspects that i wish to bring to your attention and one of them is that the people were sick and tired of all the pressures that really you know the oppression of padron and you know all the limitations on their freedom of speech etc etc and then the 2nd thing was they had lost whole you know they had lost all hope for the future for the 1st time for the 1st time the youngsters who have been you know saying that they would rather like to go to germany or to European Countries in order to get a Better Future you are now seeing inside turkey that they have a new hope which has been materialized in the policies of a tram a criminal ok so the hope side of it is extremely important ok im going to stop you then because i dont know because you are you are tending towards repeating yourself such want to take that turn it around a little bit and set put that point towards gallup delight in berlin clearly gallup the people in charge of the money the people who got their their hands on the wallets in ankara and istanbul can i suggest to you that if they dont trust mr the one do they trust mr him a model and him being the mayor of istanbul when he walks into the office thats a dry run for something bigger i think at this stage this extra minute speculative discussion that we are not what we are. We dont know what policy or the mobile will be because the mobile was elected as a memo is them will he is in no way in charge of it he is in no way is responsible to provide an Economy Policy or a proposal for anyone who bombs it or truck at this stage because what will be expected from him will be to delivering the Municipal Services the municipal. Municipal activities not like you know providing any new blueprint for the turkeys economy how it would take its economy walls and took his political war so this is not there and at this stage we have not seen we dont know anything or where doesnt it will stand on all these major issues because we are coming all busy and champaign period within all of us to stop us well there istanbul is much more significant than. A Satellite Town outside of ankara it is crucially important it is the jewel in the plan we set up this this time yesterday and i think it is the jewel in the crown of turkish politics it is massively important. You know thats all like you know what is known about islam and so there is nothing new when we define somewhat the question that youre putting it what im saying is at this stage we cannot have a discussion on this a we dont know where does what us is that in any of these policies because they cannot remember what was and are not names under for months at all so within the present for 6 months or when the Election Campaign started so he was the mayor office mall this is the mall where he was not responsible or any Big Questions of the government or governance but at this stage immobile is being sent by many people as a potential contender a challenger for underground bunker on the go for a president ial election but this is that you know a big if because we dont know whether the turkish poll this will see new actors that is emerging because theres another possibility and now we see were discussing this cousin the possibility that the new word is to emerge from within the conservative circle as well to that mayes split from the uk party that may emerge as new actors so like 3 or 4 years from now or turkish politics from a comic us as a century just look at the last 3 or 4 years what has happened in turkey that seems like you know the things that can be basically confined into like you know 3 or 4 decades in other countries ok so let me bring in the if you very again dishonest this come down to in the next year or so mr erdogan wants reaction what happens if he comes out wanting to very publicly build more of a democratic turkey as opposed to wanting to kill or neuter or imprison democracy. Well 1st i will say the economy crisis which turkey us on it sounds is very largely controlled by the president that on one is the debt crunch 2nd is nonsensical theories about Interest Rates and search the missing child of economy and finances its sunny low this alibi iraq and he has 0 credibility on the markets so this is not going to wait until the next president ial election this is a question of weeks and months whether turkey goes to the i. M. F. Where the turkey finds somebody else somewhere like china and something to risk you but the economy is on the verge of collapse and this is very urgent said mr has little to he has no handle to to to react to these secondly as you point out the wider impact of these stumbled action is essentially on rule of law on governance whether mr dog will want on the lot to take some lessons from what happened yesterday this is a landslide its a landslide on the on on about the stumbled you can be little it to some extent but its huge i mean 800 cells and votes is huge. It is a phase full companion of missed out on for a lot of time is the one who has built all these bridges high speed rail ways boards and so on and so forth which where the pride of the a. K. P. Until now so the defeat is is there but the difficulty in turkey internally answering the. Big half of the turkish citizens that are asking for more difficulty and externally asking for more rule of law if not then in Foreign Investors will not come well that says this is a real challenge and mr a member of probably will have some messages to the president but the president can fairly we ignore them so the ball in this respect is very much in the president s ad what kind of lessons will it draw from his personal defeat yesterday ok tomorrow to nick in ankara briefly please what if some of the rumors are true and there are members of the a k party who are biding their time and they are planning rival Political Parties and they are we were being told by the rumor mill planning on announcing this in the next year or so. Yes i was i wanted to jump in in order to tell you a few developments in the political arena here and you know the new parties that will be declared pretty soon one is by and the budge on which they say is certain and they say is going to be supported by a block our former president and i think theyre planning to step in into the political realm of this country by by having left us say 3040. 00 parliamentarians from the Turkish Parliament to join them and which will substantially reduce the power of out of the one now the reason in my for former speech or. By alluding to what we have got to wait as as far as a tribunal is. Implementation is the following it is a fact that he is going to take steps. Towards democracy ok but i want to talk to you never which i again i apologize i want to put the last 20 seconds of an answer to gallup delight gallup you have 20 seconds is it fair to say turkey is now heading into a period of uncertainty but certainly it may be instability. Well i will feel like it will be a political pluralism that will see more and more and some of the things will be that will be. Certain there will not be a better because. At the bottom hour and its legal. And it Single Person over the whole process now there are new words and that creates uncertainty but also that great. Sit with headlines on aljazeera the news continues after the men who stole the world i hope you do stay with us thanks for watching. It was july 1st 2000. And was living in humber german with. It was in my flat with my wife that i had just married. 2 men came to the door. Of the not recognized did not answer the door. Minutes later i left the building walked to the car and 2 unidentified towards the Police Officers showed up in front of me and in german basically identified themselves and said they were there interpol f. B. I. A warrant come with us. That was not at all what he was expecting obviously he looked at his wife and blew her a kiss and it was pretty sure he would never see her again. Thats a feeling of total fear because you have the total unknown of what the future holds. The paper was taken on a plane to chicago. Which is where he had been criminally charged. And entered the United StatesJustice System which is a really scary place to be. Facing charges of ups gone down with 460000000. 00 from the f. B. I. For fraud. My name is Philip James Baker and im the former managing partner of a 1000000000. 00 doesnt fund the collapse during the financial crisis. My story is a rise and fall to redemption story. Ive been rich. Ive been on the top. Ive been behind bars. I know what it is to be called a financial criminal. But now im free. And i want to speak out. Because of what i saw because ive been there i can tell that if we do nothing. Everything can happen again. They had no consequence. The titans of wall street basically faced nothing. For my life i went to prison and. Some people would say well you know what you did wrong its fair its just. Argument could be agreed. But what about the people in the titans of wall street. The business started in the basement of my parents and this company grew to be a 1000000000. 00 company. It was a hedge fund farm. Built a fair set up a hedge fund designed to trade in commodity. Prices of oil coal things like that he was a marketer he was the client. He was the one who would go out to wealthy individuals or institutions and get them put their money with. Clients for Global Investment banks from around the world Goldman Sachs bank of canada. H. S. B. C. Bank and it was goes. So its quite a list. We offer it in close to 40 Different Countries around the world brazil are rude panama colombia japan taiwan hong kong obviously throughout europe. We are making millions per month. Offshore accounts. Paying taxes. I was living the dream. Werent worried about anything but in my particular instance i had something to worry about. All sorts of investors all over the world were very eager to put their money with him because he was generating very good returns and thats what investors want he turned out to be doing Something Else which was he was misappropriating the investors money and the investors thought they were achieving these excellent returns in reality they were not full baker and his partners were essentially making it up they were lie. The 2nd thing and in some ways the more damaging issue is that as they sought to recruit additional investors new investors which were essential because they needed to paper over the last the money that theyd already lost they were in their prospectuses in the documents they provided to investors to show investors how well theyve known they were lying there to it when they were saying instead of having lost 50 percent of their assets in the 1st year they were saying oh look at us weve got this long track record of very impressive returns. They were lying not only about the returns but they were lying about the longevity of the fund so they were saying they had i believe a 14 year track record just wasnt true that they had not been trading for 14 years. Trading results were falsely reported and hence that was a fraud you can do that one penny not reported properly is wrong. The victims were everyone who invested with. Investors who lost their money initially investors to put their money in after the initial fraud occurred and so there were hundreds of millions of dollars that vanished as a result of this. Ive been asked why did i break them on i wanted to protect what i had money family power of a bit of business. What do you mean how many people say no i dont want the power i dont want the money. And walk away. Were you says that you are right sort of women were this were. Its very interesting when you see your name. Philip james baker versus the United States of america. Its overwhelming. Then you face the assistant u. S. Attorney as hes looking you in the eye and when you go through that circumstance there are no words that really can describe the depths of the loneliness and feel of the moment. Ultimately. Completed a plea deal with the United States government. I was sentenced to 20 years. For a wire from. Bill because a criminal is he the type of financial mastermind that caused the financial crisis absolutely not this is a guy who is was not very sophisticated about his crime was not very. Malicious about his crime and but he admitted that he committed a crime this is a classic example of where the Justice Department takes a shortcut they want to generate publicity for themselves as going after financial drugs and Everyone Wants them to do that. And yet time and time again the people that theyre going after are these little minnows theyre not going after the big fish theyre not going after the bankers for the most part theyre certainly not going after the Senior Executives at the banks or other big Financial Institutions they were the Decision Makers leading up to the financial crisis. 10 years after the financial crisis except iceland. How many white collar criminals are behind bars. From Credit Suisse is the only banker of wall street to go to jail related to the crisis. Just a few 1000000 not really big fish not a true out. Only one big bank Top Executive name. The number of people convicted of crimes linked to the crisis in the u. S. According the Financial Times 324 people from main street. Wall street chief executives have been to prison. Even though there is absolutely no doubt that wall street executives of politicians were complicit in creating the crisis. This is the story of how massive global banks made billions. By packaging toxic Mortgage Loans and Financial Products and sold them all around the world. The american politicians pulled the trigger. It all started with a political philosophical or a grand ambitions of allowing everyone to own a home. Our government is supporting homeownership. Because it is good for america. It is good for families. It is good for our economy. Part of the American Dream that was pushed by you know all sorts of president s clinton bush whatever for years was homeownership. I thought he kept Interest Rates very low in order to make money. Or. Wall street and politicians had agreed to Work Together. Wall street with the pursuit of profits. The politicians with the pursuit of government interference on economic growth. Which could be turned into election victories for years to come. This was the beginning of the housing bubble. When the bubbles expanding everybody is aware. Everybody is a genius. The lenders bank money the Real Estate DevelopmentCompanies Make money the construction workers make money Everybody Loves a bubble. But this was a devils deal between politicians and wall street. The setting to a perfect storm. Of what happens in a booth is lenders take more and more risk. And borrowers take burra more risk because they both think things are safer than they appear to be and one of the ways they persuade themselves to take more risk is through financial innovations. Wall street created the risky loans called subprime to americans. Who could you afford to pay the bank loans. That they had just applied for. The public were given access to 0 low income and even no job loan. So if you want of the absolute craziness it would be the ninja loan so ninja stands for no income no job and no assets and. The idea is that you would lend money to people that gave you no information. About whether they had any income with the at any job. At any assets. It will allow you to grow enormously because now you can loan in the us context to ands of millions of people at rates or. How many people out there are there who cant. Get alone. Tens of millions of people in the United States tens of millions of people in france in these circumstances. This goes under the general category of predation in the United States the people that were targeted for the worst loans were overwhelmingly a combination of the 4 demographic factors blacks latinos the elderly and females that is incredibly and so why almost everywhere in the world these things are crimes. These talks of loans became a gold rush for the whole u. S. Banking and financial industry. All the major actors of wall street want a piece of a song crime part of. Goldman sachs Lehman BrothersMorgan StanleyMerrill Lynch their sterns j. P. Morgan citigroup and so on. The friends extended itself on loans were sought by the public by falsifying their own financial situation on loan applications. Therefore the public and banks were complicit committing bank fraud. My name is richard on. I was in your. President and business chief underwriter for citigroup. At the time citi group was the largest bank if. It was my responsibility to make sure that the 90000000000. 00 a year that we were purchasing Mortgage Loans that were originally aided by other banks and Mortgage Companies these maps are policies standards. In early 2006. I discovered that over 60 percent of these mortgages did not meet our guidelines they were by definition defective when i discovered this in this was june of 2006. Silly me i thought it was my job i started issuing warnings because i was supposed to make sure that these met our policy guidelines and i sent email i put it in my weekly report i made Committee Presentation i mean im not a shy guy i cornered people in the hallways at the water fountain and everyone say yeah yeah we we we know we need to fix that but nothing would happen and through 20062007 the volumes kept increasing and the rate of defective mortgages increased from 62. 00 in excess of 80 percent it was 80 percent of these mortgages that we were in terms selling. And giving our representations and warranties that they were they met our policy guidelines did not meet our policy guidelines this is misrepresentation that is true as a matter of fact it was for all. Ive seen plenty of alone documents with my own eyes other were falsified and the borrower still signed them as if they were correct. People who were typically hairdressers gardeners and such reporting incomes of over 100000. 00 a year now their actual incomes would be in the range of about 16000. 00 in those cases their income is inflated by it 6 times. You would have the waiters in a restaurant showing that they made 150000. 00 a year i mean that clearly is. Is out of line but nonetheless the long type permitted that to happen. Richard bowen and his staff very carefully very professionally are documenting. That these loans their reps and warranties are false. But city is overwhelmingly turning around in reselling these loans. Citi group did not want to know because if it looked at these places it couldnt possibly continue. To use them. It was all about generating the revenue. People who worked on wall street conceived of the idea of securitizing mortgages. Packaging mortgages up into securities they actually arranged to buy the mortgages they would pack of them up into securities they would file documents with the Security Exchange commission that they had to be able to call them securities and then they would sell them to investors all around the world and all along the way they were making money was almost like it was a perfect product that anybody who touched a mortgage made money off of it. November the 2nd of 2007 sitting at my Kitchen Table i put together an email. And i simply emailed to Robert Reuben who the next day on sunday at the Board Meeting was named chairman of the board. I also sent it to the chief risk officer the chief Financial Officer in the chief ordered. I said urgent breed committee at work Financial Issues i put that in all capital letters i call for an outside investigation i said come in here from the outside and investigate what is going on here because everybody here already knows and no one contacted me. Throughout november throughout the summer there was no contact no one said the word. Will tell you that that particular point in time. Before i would even get in my car. I was doing what they do in the books im just looking underneath my car and good luck. It was a very frightening time. Said you worry the 6th i received there was an email that went out with regard to reorganization. And in that reorganization i was stripped of all my underwriting responsibilities that next week i was put on in the news grady believe and told him not to come back to the bad. 2 news is happening faster than ever before from different places from different people and you need to be part of that you need to be able to reach people wherever they are and that means being across all social media platforms this is where our audience lives as well as in front of a t. V. Theyre on the smartphone theyre all metabo theyre on the computer. And thats the way aljazeera is of all into the true media network. They wanted 43000000000. 00 worth of weaponry that was 6000000000. 00 pounds in commission. Theres no hope of any more because theres always a small cobbles people for really really Good Business. In essence we in the United States have privatized the ultimate Public Function more shadow on aljazeera. With. The with. The. Flow again im fully back to go with the headlines on aljazeera u. S. President donald trump as simple as what is calling hard hitting new sanctions on irans leadership including Supreme Leader ayatollah ali how many russia has called the new measures illegal irans foreign minister has condemned the sanctions saying the u. S. Has no interest in diplomacy washington is finding more in the coming days which will include mama jobs every protests have taken face across palestine as anger grows against uses economic conference in bahrain white house Senior Adviser giant kushner is leading the 2 day nation if hes expected to reveal details of the socalled deal of the century for the middle east before flying to bahrain spoke to aljazeera and said hes confident the conference will be a success. So i think its already been a success in the sense that we have every country coming from the region we have a lot of countries coming from throughout the world despite people who tried to get them not to come theyre all coming and thats a very big 1st step the 2nd step is that weve been able to get some of the top investors and people from throughout the world to come who are showing interest in helping the Palestinian People in the region right now with a lot of Investment Funds that wont invest in the middle east because its not stable they dont have peace they dont have security and so we want to show people is that there is a Great Potential a great future for this region if its possible the general behind the failed coup in ethiopia somehow region has been shot dead by Government Forces trying to capture him for senior officials were killed during the attempt to overthrow the local government on saturday 3 days of mourning is being obsessive. Greed was definitely the driver. As it is almost forgotten until. Citigroup was not the only one. Comparable level of fraudulent Mortgage Loans have been seen. In all the big wall street banks. Ignoring the risk of bankruptcy. Banks began to pour a massive amount of money to buy more and more Mortgage Loans and package them into derivatives. The top honor writer in the peak years of 2005 and 2006 limits dropped. At 106000000000. 00. Naman was one of the largest makers and sellers of the the absolute most oxic loans in the entire world Lehman Brothers was one of the largest fraud vectors in the history of the world. My name is am time balu because. You go by the name tony. In the year 2009. 3 months after the lehman bankruptcy i was appointed by the federal court in new york to act as an examiner. I was independent of i me of the party in among the responsibilities of the court charged me and my team which was to determine how and why lehman went into bankruptcy. And when youre talking about the lehman bankruptcy you are talking about the largest single bankruptcy in the history of Financial Institutions total amount of the bankruptcy 693000000000. 00. So we told the story of what happened. Lehman brothers with the 4th largest Global Investment bank in the world. Led by famous c. E. O. Dick fuld. Hi my name is dick fuld the chairman and chief executive officer of Lehman Brothers nows a terrific time to be joining Lehman Brothers ive been here 30 years and i cant think of a better time for you to take part in changes in opportunities that are going on. But they do you get food what would be the 1st thing that crossed your mind. A person who was viewed as a lion on wall street i believe that in the year 2008 the very year the bankruptcy was named by forbes as one of the top 10 executives in the country. They call them the gorilla and i think they call them that for a reason he was brusque borish take no prisoners kind of guy you know run through a wall for Lehman Brothers. Hypercompetitive. Stick. To squeeze some of those shorts. Squeeze him hard. To open. Not that i want to hurt him who dont get that please because thats just not who i am who i am soft im lovable. But what i really want to do is i want to reach in ripped out their heart and eat it before they die the man who lost them and brothers the man who presided over its decline and fall a man who could have done something about it but chose not to the man who refused to see the writing on the wall the man who you know. Kicked off in many ways which became the great recession. My name is all over buddha and i was an inhouse lawyer at Lehman Brothers for years. I discovered many things that were at least unethical. If not illegal. And eventually i decided to quit. I was earning a lot of money. But it was not enough for me to turn a blind eye to all that was happening in. The tone coming from the top tip fuld the guys around him were go for pushing go beyond the limits the key at lehman was to evaluate the risk and the reward and never mind the law that might be in between there if if the reward is high enough and the risk is low enough we will do it and we will sort it out later. This was a culture of risk. And this was all about money. Lehman brothers Risk Analysis Program was considered a model on wall street i mean it was brilliantly conceived. The problem was it was simply ignored you have to understand you talk about to pull folks made his fortune at Lehman Brothers he was a billionaire. So if you say why i think he had it wrong it ask you are you a billionaire if you made a 1000000000. 00 trading i you and he had. 2 in the years leading up to the crisis everything the Financial Health of Lehman Brothers could not have been better at least on paper. They expanded the use of their toxic the rules. And the ratio of lending expanded. In 2008 demons was massively leveraged. Lehman brothers had one of the highest leverage ratios in american Financial Institutions a leverage ratio is a ratio of your debt to your equity another word for equity is capital its ratio depending on the exact time was 30 to 40. 00 to 1. 00 another words for every dollar of suppose a capital that had it had 30. 00 to 40. 00 in debt. Lehman became the focus of worldwide attention because they were perceived as the next weakest link they were the next domino to fall. So lehman is in gauged in a scheme. A accounting scheme to make it look better and what they did was involved what was called greek bowl one of. This was something that lehman used every quarter to hide some of the borrowed money. You see lehman would borrow money and they would pledge securities that they had as collateral. At the end it was 50000000000. 00 each quarter they would borrow 50000000000. 00 and they would give 50000000000. 00 in collateral. But they would actually say that this was a sale this was not a pledge for a loan but this was a sale of those assets for 50000000000. 00 and they would treat the 50000000000. 00 not as debts but as cash that they just got. And by doing that and using that cash to pay down still other jat they could they could materially significantly move that leverage ratio down. Then as soon as the quarter was over and they had published their number they would undo that transaction and presto they would. Give back the money take back the securities and again be leveraged just as high as they were before they did this only to fool the public and no other reason. The effect of that was in june they were able to show that their leverage had been dropped dramatically. And the street said wow lehmans doing ok. Are for of a strong today and we will emerge from this cycle he even stronger. Weve done it before. And we will do it again so that fits the number yes my opinion they absolutely fudge the numbers they they engaged in a trend even within their own emails they referred to it as a drug they were on. A sham an accounting gimmick to make themselves look better so they knew what they were doing so that where i didnt information to the police yes thats my that was if anybody can be reached in the report isnt it against a no. Well if you file a misleading statement and you knowingly file a misleading statement and a judge concludes that you have done so or a jury does that is against the law yes there was a basis by which such a claim could be made yes we did indeed against dick fuld the c. E. O. s. But nobody was arrested or charged for us now if there were no arrests there were no charge there was no jury trial there was no civil case brought which the jury heard the case and then decided the case not all those things took place no. Let me start by saying that i have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of hearing anything about were seeing documents related to repeal 105 transactions while i was the c. E. O. Of lehman you think its possible that deferred didnt know now is the of course of course. There were Senior Executives at lehman who were interviewed by mr valukas and others who said that yes he did know that emails were sent to him that showed the repo 105 portion of the financials to show the facts of this and then dick fuld answer was well they might have sent me emails but i dont know how to work a computer i dont know how to open an attachment that would have a spreadsheet to show this so i never saw it i was never aware this was historic. Wall street misrepresented its financial condition. At the same time millions were spent. This was a job. Place to make money and the most money was wall street. Bonuses reached levels that had never been even approximated in the world. Millions of dollars a year its like the greatest job that you could ever imagine getting without putting any of your own capital with. Excessive lifestyles. They were willing to take risks to support that lifestyle. Theres a great bit of narcissism and antisocial personality disorders in with those they might feel like they have a sense of entitlement or theyre above the law or theyre too good. On wall street these c. E. O. s they can they pull away and some of them would pull in 100000000. 00 a year and dick fuld had several years were. It was 789100000000. 00 in one year. He had a multimillion dollar home in greenwich and thats where he lived most of the time but he also kept a very fancy malls i 1000000. 00 apartment on park avenue and he had another home down in florida also worth 1015000000. 00 another place in idaho a sun valley some sort of a cabin in the woods there but again multimillion dollar property. Since 2000 youve taken home more than 480000000. 00 thats almost half a 1000000000. 00 your company is now bankrupt our economy is in a state of crisis but you got to keep 480 1000000. 00 i have a very basic question for you is this fair i would say to you the 500. 00 number is not accurate and i believe the amount that i took out of the company over and above that was. I believe a little bit less than 250000000000 still a large number that the large number. Of them i mean you know the facts both numbers were wrong and both numbers were low the true number was 530000000 420022007 dick fuld said yeah i only made 310. 00 thats over 200000000. 00 that he took off his total under oath i swear to tell the truth the whole truth he did it on television for the world and this stood up. For what. I dont even think i could resist if you gave me the opportunity to make 550000000. 00 and all i had to do was hurt 6000000000. 00 people i would think about it the temptation is there the real message is we dont care how you did it we dont care where theres real we dont care whether its honest just do it. Because youll be rich and ill be rich. In the financial context modern executive compensation didnt just create the most criminogenic environment it created the biggest crimes in financial history and has nothing close. This is absolutely stunning wall street has seen very very few days like this. You never will have. The house of cards came falling down. Lehman brothers 150 Year Old Firm filed for bankruptcy brought down by bad Mortgage Investments lehman which has 25000. 00 employees will be liquidated. You know corporations die of Cancer Investment banks die of heart attacks. There was a time when these assets were completely toxic and when they completely. Anybody as a terrible problem and thats the situation lehman found itself in. People basically ran. To it and the government behind it so it collapsed. The 15th of september 2008. Lehman brothers goes bankrupt. Had its biggest drop in a single day since 911. Banks began to stop lending money to each other. The collapse of Lehman Brothers triggered markets around the globe stocks tumbled in india. The 2008 financial crisis displayed what the world now identifies as financial contagion. There was a worldwide recession you know the value of real estate plummeted people lost their homes you could go through. Southwest side of chicago to see foreclosure foreclosure foreclosure home after home after home they were going belly up as a result of that. Numerous businesses went out of business. This is a fraud but if this is not random its not hoops. Everybody got hurt i mean the impact across the world was measured in the trillions of dollars the value of. What was was trying to appear in time is almost incalculable weve never seen anything like that since 1920 and. This crisis has changed the world to many long lost stay where. Without the crisis breaks it would not have happened and donald trump would not be president of the United States this is a major turning point you never know what it will be but the thirtys transformed the world. Because you brought us the 2nd bobo its somewhat sceptical to become johns to do with the great depression. So it changes everything. You know of the leading Company Executives were ever brought to justice. I lost everything. All the money everything i had. My wife my family connections i lost everything. Im just a small fish and. I was brought to justice. They all went through. The system is is what it is. And until the system changes the powerful continue to walk. The youve seen that there were some very large settlements that were made but they never admitted that they did it. There was no ignition of guilt there was no charge of any criminal activity and i have always represented that those payments were nothing more than payment. So the extortion to the department of justice to seal the evidence to lock up the evidence so the public would never see how widespread and pervasive the fraud was that was committed and i truly believe that. These crimes are so vastly larger than any blue collar crimes its just off the charts non comparable in terms of these things its what balzac actually set behind every fortune that you cant explain lies that just a fraud but one a fraud executed so well that it wasnt prosecuted. We are now in midtown manhattan on park avenue. This is the old this is where lehman was after 911 and this building across the street is where dick fuld the c. E. O. Is working today and his new Company Matrix capital nothing has changed hes in the same business he always was some people may think of him as some sort of. You know guy that was banished forever but now hes just fine. The world collapsed there were trillions of dollars of damage it didnt cost dick fuld a dollar to man put 550000000. 00 into his pocket he kept it all and presumably hes probably grown that child quite considerably perhaps he has a 1000000000 by now the stock market has been doing very well since the crisis. Prison was the beginning of the dems. The judge told me to. Do something good with your life. And thats why im trying to make a difference by speaking to the public. About my failures and how they can be aware of. What the world is facing. Do i think it could happen again do i think that thats i think thats yes i do. The seeds of the next financial crisis have already been planted theyre growing. We cant see them yet but there are plenty of signs all around of of trouble brewing. I think there is no doubt that. We are going into another crisis of a greater stability than we have just been through. I cant predict what the instruments are going to be i cant predict the specifics but i know it will be driven by greed and misbehavior has no consequence we have shown that. We the public and Decision Makers. Basically havent learned because we never so much understood the crisis but the bankers have learned the lessons. And the lesson was this is wheat. On aljazeera. This is aljazeera. You know im fully back to where this is a news hour live from the headquarters in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes a lot of restraint and that doesnt mean were going to show it in the future a warning from donald trump along with new sanctions which targets iran Supreme Leader. We want to show people that there is a Great Potential a great future for the white house Senior Adviser jared cushion or tells aljazeera his economic conference of palestinians will be a success despite widespread anger against it also this hour as ethiopia mourns the victims of a failed coup the man behind the rebellion is killed by security. Or says it only took a couple of clicks on the keyboard to change my image into that of Vladimir Putin and we go inside the world of deep fake videos and look at their implications for politicians and elections. Thank you very much for joining us u. S. President donald trump has imposed what hes calling hard hitting new sanctions on irans leadership as tensions continue to build in the gulf region the measures go all the way up to the Supreme Leader ayatollah ali how many to block access to Financial Resources and the u. S. Financial system in response irans foreign minister mama jogs a reef has accused the trumpet ministration of having no interest in diplomacy and a thirst for war meanwhile u. S. Secretary of States Michael impale has been decided to arabia and the United Arab Emirates trying to build a Global Coalition against iran mike hanna begins our coverage with this report from washington. And that doesnt mean were going to show in the future no complete details provided by the treasury secretary either but steve did confirm that some of the sanctions are a direct response to last weeks attack on a u. Mike hanna aljazeera washington the u. S. Is planning more sanctions in the coming days and irans foreign minister is expected to be among those blacklisted dosage barry has a reaction from. The announcement that by the end of this week could be reined in foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif will be sanctioned by the Us Government comes as a surprise here in iran this person mom which of us a reef is a career diplomat who has lived in the United States he was at the United Nations for many many years and he is known as the face of the Islamic Republic on the International Stage that shovelled all around the world and met with many many diplomats he is very well known on that level every so this decision is very much a surprise many analysts say here this is one of the most surprising decisions by the trumpet ministration in the meantime the decision to sanction the iranian Supreme Leader will likely not have much effect the Ayatollah Khomeini has not left iran in over 30 years since he was president in 1909 the last time he left around was on a state visit to china in april of 1989 the commanders that have been sanctioned as well will not really be much affected by this decision many here believe this announcement shows how desperate the United States is in trying to get iran to the negotiating table but many believe this is actually going to have the opposite effect and create further divisions and tensions between the United States and iran while russia is calling the new sanctions illegal and says it will take steps to counter the measures and has more from moscow. Russias Deputy Foreign minister ripped off has said that any new u. S. Sanctions are counterproductive and will only increase tensions and he also said that russia wants to take countermeasures together with its partners its not clear and he did not specify what kind of countermeasures he means and also if his European Partners agree with this on friday the deputy minister sat that russia wants to help iran with its oil exports and also with its Banking System and he has been disappointed about the fact that this european system that designed currently to avoid the u. S. Sanctions and help iran with oil exports is still not going anywhere and you said that the European Partners are fairly under so much pressure of the United States that this is not going to going to go anywhere so thats where russia wants to stab in but again is this a serious intention or is this a threat this is still not clear record has been very aggressive and very firm on the on the u. S. Sanctions towards iran and also on any steps that the u. N. United states has taken towards iran. Blank was a Senior State Department official under president obama who oversaw the implementation of the Iran Nuclear Deal he says that while the new sanctions will be largely symbolic the underlying message could escalate the situation even further. Well i think that the same sions on the Supreme Leader does office are almost certainly to be to be read in iran as confirmation that this administration is pursuing a regime change policy even if President Trump denies it and even if other officials dont use that phrase what is targeting the leadership of the regime other than regime change so thats clearly negative symbolism as regards foreign minister zarif you know 1st of all hes the regimes negotiator so if youre saying we want to talk sanctioning the lead negotiator probably sends a strange message more than that i find it very unlikely that even our closest allies and partners are going to follow through with this if jobs or if wants to go to paris to talk to our to our allies hell be able to rent a hotel room hell be able to get cash to pay for his dinner is however the case may be it will really show the extent of u. S. Isolation the individuals and institutions that have been designated for sanctions are almost certainly fully insulated from the International Financial system already so i dont see this has having it any particular way to crimp their style this is rather a symbolic step and the the problem with out is not that its about like and of itself its good to send messages the problem is that the messages that the administration is sending are more likely to lead to escalation than to deescalation the president says and i tend to believe that hes not looking for a war in the middle east but perhaps because he really doesnt track the details of the situation and hes hired people who arent diplomats but arsonists and as allowed them to run a very very aggressive policy the administration is increasingly cornered into a position where it feels obliged to respond to it for tat and its responses i think are becoming more and more likely to turn aggressive our military the u. N. Security council meanwhile is calling on all sides to show restraint and also condemned attacks on oil tankers in the persian gulf area this month the u. S. Blamed iran but tehran denies any involvement from u. N. Headquarters alan fisher has this report. Theres been a common theme from the diplomats at the u. N. One aid about growing friction between the u. S. And iran i think has a lot. To see deescalation and to look for Diplomatic Solutions because this is a closed door meeting of the Security Council was to discuss the recent attacks on shipping in the gulf but the americans also briefed the council about the doning of its by joined by the iranians last week. But there was no place at the table for the Iranian Ambassador to the country not come with a member of the council today the council is being briefed unilaterally by one party the u. S. Who is abusing its position as the councils permanent member to misguide this body in order to advance its anti iran policy and well donald trump says hes open to negotiations with the unions the Ambassador Says new sanctions make that important as long as this threat is is there there is no very that iran and the u. S. Trying to start a dialogue with the u. S. Says it presented clear evidence iran was behind the attacks on shipping and that its draw in was an International Air space the coordinates of the drones flight path and location which i shared with the council make clear that the aircraft at no point entered iranian airspace irans claims to the contrary are false and rely on an argument that the u. S. Aircraft was in irans flight Information Age but a countrys flight information region is not the same as their space the Security Council will be talking around again in the coming days this time the Iran Nuclear Deal there are many on the council who still support it the u. S. Has pulled out and wants others to do the same theres a lot of talk here about deescalation and negotiation over the coming to speak but theres very little sign of it and there is a what it that the next thing between the u. S. And iran will be the catalyst for something much worse Alan Fischer Al Jazeera at the u. N. In new york tensions between iran and the u. S. Have been on the rise since u. S. President Donald Trump Took Office from pulling out of the 2015 nuclear deal to incidents in the gulf of oman shallot bellas takes a look at how we got to this point. This is a sort of brinkmanship between the u. S. And iran began last year as President Donald Trump pulled out of the 25th a nuclear deal he said iran was a threat in the middle east and a new plan was needed this was a horrible one sided deal that should have never ever been made here impose sanctions and all this started to squeeze irans economy and that irans foreign minister to say the sanctions always hurt but sanctions never change policy. People have to make the distinction here trump continued with a tactic of maximum pressure in early april he does it next to the Islamic Revolutionary guard corps a branch of irans armed forces a terrorist organization the masquerade as a legitimate military organization but none of us should be for iran responded by does igniting seem calm a terrorist organization thats americas military hub for the middle east and early may the white house deployed to carry a strike group to the gulf in response to undefined iranian threats against u. S. Interests the pentagon supplemented that with an extra 2500. 00 military personnel to the region iran announced it would suspend some of its commitments in the nuclear deal and threaten to increase uranium enrichment the u. S. Called it Nuclear Extortion there in full commercial ships including 2 Saudi Arabian oil tankers were damaged here in the waters off the United Arab Emirates trump blamed iran iran tonight involvement and a month later to oil tank is well 7 tallish here in the gulf of mon near the strategically important strait of hormuz crewmembers were evacuated again the u. S. Blamed iran giving media this video allegedly showing iranian sailors removing a mine from one of the ships around again denied involvement and on thursday it is skill late into the air iran shot down a u. S. Drone but were iran said it was in there is space u. S. Sid it was not as a ranch showed off what it says it was the wreckage of the drone trump tweeted city had come within 10 minutes of retaliation on 3 iranian sites but didnt to avoid fatalities a standoff between the u. S. And iran and the conflict in syria are likely to dominate a rare 3 way meeting between the u. S. Israel and russia being held in west jerusalem on tuesday early on mondays us Prime Minister how talks with russias Security Council secretary will represent his country during tuesdays discussions. Moscows positions on regional issues have been at odds with those of the u. S. And israel is to be sure newbies up us and we are paying special attention to preserving the security of israel and in order to resolve this issue want to practical level we have to bring back peace in the area and in syria to aljazeera has been its mate has more from western slim this was a long meeting between israel and russia to discuss syria primarily iranian involvement in syria israel of course determined to stop iran building any sort of military bases stop wishing in his or her permanent foothold in syria israels military has previously destroyed attempts by around to build bases in syria. I would like to say in the clearest way that is really russian cooperation on the security level this cooperation has already contributed plenty to the security and stability in our region it significantly changed the situation in the area on choose day the us National Security adviser john bolton joins in the discussions again primarily to talk about iran when this meeting was shed jule the americans said that this was an unprecedented diplomatic opportunity for discussions on syria and iran involvement in the region in the wider region although russias foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has previously said that trying to curb irans influence in syria and the middle east is unrealistic. In syria nearly 500 civilians have been killed on the russian backed government offensive on a province the campaign to capture the last opposition house region began 9 weeks ago in northwestern syria as in a harder reports from beirut on one young boy who was lucky to survive after his house was hit. Dont. Need a brain has been to one of the protests in the occupied west bank and has this report from ramallah. Palestinians have always their judgment to them and im a summit that is expected to be held tomorrow they say that the road to solving the palestinian israeli conflict is not through economic means and they said that palestine is not for sale. In a recent poll 80 percent of palestinians say that they dont believe the u. S. Plan will lead them to statehood or that the u. S. Is serious about its efforts palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said that while economy is important and foreign aid is important the most important story here is political the Palestinian Authority has stopped engaging with the u. S. Ever since the Us Administration has moved its embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem announcing jerusalem as israels capital and gaza hamas has also rejected the deal and palestinians there have organized a marathon against it saying that the men i met were child will be a success. This is one of many protest down but that he and p. L. O. Hatchets have pulled over in the west bank that are expected to last then when they were just the 2nd hand point of the album and over to the Palestinian Group hamas which governs gaza described the conference in bahrain as a conspiracy you already know about this we declare our rejection of the deal of the century and the bahrain conference we pledged to work to abort this conspiracy we emphasize the arab nature of jerusalem and palestine and the right to refugees to return to the land from which they were driven out of. Our before trying to bahrain Jared Kushner spoke to aljazeera and said he is confident the conference will be a success. So i think its already been a success in the sense that we have every country coming from the region we have a lot of countries coming from throughout the world despite people who tried to get them not to come theyre all coming and thats a very big 1st step the 2nd step is that weve been able to get some of the top investors and people from throughout the world to come who are showing interest in helping the Palestinian People in the region right now with a lot of Investment Funds that wont invest in the middle east because its not stable they dont have peace they dont have security and so we want to show people is that there is a Great Potential a great future for this region if its possible and i saw speak to David Phillips whos the director of the program on peace building and rights at Columbia University is i skype from new york states in the u. S. Thank you so much for being with us are you at all optimistic about the outcome of this conference do you think they can be a disconnect can you disconnect the Economic Situation of palestinians with their political situation so the conference may be well intended but its ill conceived you cant focus on Economic Development render assistance create from the core political issues Palestinian People want and deserve a state of their own unless that meeting is supposed to talk about a little status and political issues theres very little. Focusing on Economic Issues only. The plan doesnt that least for now focus on political questions about statehood and the palestinians have rejected it how do you think this is going to be viewed when it strengthen its now its position israels position it undermines the forces of peace in the region unless you have a meaningful and sincere effort to bring the parties together and talk about a 2 state solution. There is no crosscheck prospects for Economic Development business and trade and investment and infrastructure is not a substitute for the dignity and status that the Palestinian People want one of the ontario motives e. A. A. Think of the u. S. Administration do they believe in the notion of an independent palestinian state as part of a 2 state solution or you have to ask the question of mr kushner theres no indication that the trouble ministration is behind a 2 state solution its put together this economic conference in order to show that there is motion and the Peace Process but motion is a poor substitute for results and people will invest and money will be put on the table and thats the Palestinian People are participating and p. A. s and ball and so far theres no indication that the house indians are going to show up and that theyll be partners yeah but some countries in this region as you know has been somewhat under pressure from the u. S. Administration do you think gulf countries will pay for this plan without progress on the political front how will they be implementing this so they may be prepared to put money down at the Syrian People have made it clear they cant be bought their top priority is sovereignty and status and unless theres a parallel process which is focused on a little issues were not going to see any headway on the economic side its good to have a conference on infrastructure and an. But thats not a substitute for negotiations on elliston status without that were not going to see any motion for Devon Phillips thank you very much for talking to all jews there thank you. Said in his victory speech on sunday that hes willing to work with everyone to improve Living Conditions in turkeys most populous city describing his triumph as a new era many here in istanbul say they are excited about the future the peoples hearts theres a feeling that he would make an excellent president oh yes not president yet so we have to while remaining cheerful we shouldnt forget the basic facts about government runs but one of the opposition and its supporters are euphoric about their win the governing party is grappling with the defeat loyalists are pressing for reforms within the party of president. But officials are brushing aside suggestions they are losing public support after 17 years in power these are opportunities for us to prove ourselves better and i think just because this is the reason why it is still the larger. Part of turkey and we have actually one more month abilities then rest of the parties combined after the municipal results were announced the turkish lira made gains against the dollar this vote was a rerun of an election held in march that was an old after the other party said there were irregularities the economy has been in decline since last year facing a currency crisis and soaring inflation now the government hopefully will hope for a 4 and 4 years of lections where they can focus back on the economy for years a good time. On their take austerity measures and then see the recovery as well. As opponents say he lacks political experience and hes a newcomer but others argue so was 25 years ago when he became mayor of istanbul and party leader and then eventually president of turkey is the boards new mayor will have to deliver on the promises hes made including fighting corruption and the partisanship and improving peoples lives but the memo to want to be able to achieve these goals unless he has the backing of president as are however the 2 leaders come from rival parties that have been on the opposing sides of turkeys Political Landscape for many years and have different views about the future of the country about aljazeera is the board.
