1st democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi has died after collapsing in court while on trial on espionage charges in the past half hour Egyptian State t. V. Said hed suffered a heart attack the 67 year old Muslim Brotherhood leader had been imprisoned since 2013 when he was 1st toppled after less than a year in office and a statement the Muslim Brotherhood said had held current president abdel fatah sisi and his government responsible for what they call the planned criminal killing of morsi his son says he gyptian authorities have refused permission for morsy to be buried at the family plot so human rights activists there are saying that morsi is medical condition was ignored by egyptian authorities and the harsh conditions in solitary confinement could have led to a premature death good to explains. A death that human rights activists have called tragic but predictable and what former egyptian president Mohamed Morsy supporters say is a model 17 june 2900. 00 mostly appeared in court for trial on charges of espionage he asked the judge if he could speak to the session in what is now his final address morsi demanded a special tribunal and better trial conditions the public prosecutors say the 67 year old then collapsed and died in a defendants cage tofail Mohamed MorsiMohamed Morsi died today while attending a session in his trial on espionage charges during the session he was granted permission to address the judge after the session was adjourned the former president blacked out and then died his body was taken to a hospital. Egypts prosecutors say they have ceased surveillance cameras in the courtroom and ordered a forensic examination preliminary reports apparently suggest no signs of external injuries but there are allegations that egyptian authorities have ignored multiple warnings by human Rights Groups and experts or voices untimely death because of inhumane prison conditions he was singled out for mistreatments. In the 1st 4 years of his detention you had exactly 2 family visits he was held in solitary confinement for nearly the entire time mention he never received the medical care that he asked or he was not allowed to have the food and medicine provided by his family that virtually all other prisoners in egypt are able to access last year a panel of british politicians and lawyers said treatment in prison was so bad that it could amount to torture. A predicts that if you didnt get the appropriate medical treatment he may very well have a premature. Torture is a crime of universal jurisdiction and we found that the responsibility for that would sit all the way up the egyptian chain of command so that if they have looked off to him properly since our report then it would be in egypt own interests to establish that the here are the more they are thats a lot of area. And the man who sits at the top of the chain of command is egypts current leader president of the fatah and sisi the former army chief ousted morsy in a military coup in 2030 and since then has locked up thousands of people a splitting of prisoners and this is the outcome that the Egyptian Government kinds wanted for years for morsi and also for other brotherhood leaders like mommy. They dont want necessarily to execute people because of the fallout and the execution would create what they want. Then a cold sweat International Investigation into morsi staff in court while his life in prison seemed entirely new and by the want to keep the disease. Our challenge looks back at the rise and fall of Mohamed Morsi. Me Mohamed Morsi sailed into the presidency of egypt on the winds of a peoples revolution demanding change in 2012 he became egypts 1st ever democratically elected president the 1st civilian to hold the office morsi was born in 1901 he spent his adult life 1st as an engineering professor then as a member of parliament and a political prisoner the egyptian revolution in 2011 set the stage for morsi to reach the pinnacle of power from the start of his critics accused him of placing his allegiance with the Muslim Brotherhood and not the country morsi made a point of repeatedly promising to be a president for all egyptians his opponents however claim he tried. Consolidate his power by giving himself or thorazine above the judiciary and dominating the governments with Muslim Brotherhood members. Morsi said his actions were to combat counter revolutionary forces led by the socalled deep state that wanted to kill egypts nascent democracy those forces included members of the military as well as regional powers namely the u. A. E. And saudi arabia who were vehemently opposed to the arab spring and june 23rd seen in scenes reminiscent of the revolution huge crowds of egyptians filled square calling for their president to step down it was a culmination of the town roots or Rebel Campaign a movement which was born a few months prior almost later reveal to being supported by abu dhabi morsi supporters took to the streets to which emboldened him and he refused to step down instead he made an offer of National Reconciliation including forming a new government of technocrats that offer was rejected by the army which days later deposed him ending egypts historic but brief experiment with democracy stripped of the title of president morsi swiftly became a political prisoner once again he was ultimately tried and sentenced to death for allegedly working with Foreign Armed groups and crossing a mass jailbreak when guards or killed. Numerous human Rights Groups as well as british parliamentarians and his family complained of intentional medical neglect and warns that morsi is imprisonment conditions would lead to his death of north improved to the end he was defiant rejecting the Courts Authority and insisting he was the legitimate president of egypt elected by the people. William laurance is a professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington university and joins us live from washington d. C. We appreciate your time so much so Mohamed Morsy obviously a former head of state a former president how would you characterize what the International Reaction has and to his death well so far the press coverage in the United States and elsewhere has lamented primarily the Egyptian Governments treatment of him particularly of his medical conditions as you know he had chronic diet diabetes and he had Liver Disease and also high Blood Pressure and Kidney Disease and under un guidelines 23 hours of solitary confinement per day is considered torture particularly for long periods he was also denied family visits which under a gyptian customs for prisoners would have included food and medical support he was cut off from the press so most of the coverage has been about the lamentable treatment about which many human rights organizations and the British Parliamentary Group had warned could lead to his death so you know those things that you just listed obviously it would anger supporters if it is you would think there are an outlet is there a way for them to express that how is this going to play out in egypt. Well i think it will be somewhat muted obviously the Egyptian Governments on the highest state of alert the Muslim Brotherhood has called for protests and egyptian embassies around the world although i would not expect a big turnout certainly if there was a proper funeral for morsi i would expect a rather large turnout but thats exactly what the egyptian authorities seem to be stopping from happening and theres some talk of quiet nighttime burial not in accordance with his familys wishes so the Egyptian Government will do everything it can to suppress the popular reaction and i think the Muslim Brotherhood to general trajectory you know in recent months and years has been not to foment a lot of instability which just leads to further repression and i think if theres anything that the Egyptian Government will pay the price will come later and not at the present time what type of message is trying to send their way that it seems that morsi is going to be traded and. I think theyre treating him as a terrorist to gyptian television today has been talking about the Muslim Brotherhood in showing pictures of the Islamic State fighters which really arent connected to the Muslim Brotherhood in any important way and so theyre going to continue to paint him in the most negative light possible while trying to suppress the reaction if i if you let me add something i think morsi. Did have a couple of flaws in this presidency and one of them was to take a kind of a majority here in approaching to be defiant there was a concerted effort in 2013 to help him broker a deal which would have possibly kept him in power and he chose to be defiant and so in many ways he chose his fate in terms of not being able to continue his presidency but no politician and no prisoner deserves the treatment that he had in prison which was lamentable and is continuing to be the case for tens of thousands of other egyptian prisoners so what do you think his considering those missteps and it you just outlined what would you say his legacy is. Well be mixed obviously he was very controversial domestically he was quite effective internationally notwithstanding the charges the Egyptian Government is made for espionage and all that which are trumped up charges but the way he handled riyadh and to iran the way he handled negotiations with the palestinians the way he. Was was a steady hand i think in International Affairs was appreciated by most governments domestically obviously he was much more controversial he was somewhat in his ruling style he was sort of against proper judicial and legislative function at certain times and had to reverse his own positions and so. Again his approach was not like we saw in tunisia a consensus approach which ended up giving them the nobel prize he had a majority area and just barely won his election for the presidency and that majority terry impro church said sort of 50 percent plus one is the way to rule the country and it up being to some degree his downfall not deserving of death and of course the death is in the hands of the Egyptian Government which you can accuse of what Human Rights Watch called criminal negligence and purposeful mistreatment of him and so part of the reason for his death is on the hands of presidency. And that part of this passing as well leon lawrence thank you so much for your insight we appreciate it. A sector general of the Muslim Brotherhood has told al jazeera that if your Security Forces will bury morsi in cairo late at night denying him a proper funeral theres a little on the video my own has in place of course this is a sad day not only for the muslim brothers but also for the egyptian people and for his family and for arabs and muslims and especially for the Palestinian People who witnessed how morsi stood with them in the war theres no doubt that history will remember it as a day most he was martyred after he was killed by the military coup. In turkey will hold funeral paris for Mohammed Morsi on tuesday president has paid his own personal tribute. In our eyes Mohammed Morsi is a martyr who lost his life while he fought for the cause he believed history will never forget the tyrants who put him in prison threaten them with the Death Penalty and caused his massive we formed a close friendship with him before he was elected as president and preserved it afterwards morsi who was put on trial by the court step by the code ministration and simply asked him to death gave his last breath in a courtroom and this is a symbol of the cruelty inflicted upon him and his people for years. The mere katara shape to maim and harm at all funny has tweeted we have received with deep sadness the news about the former president dr Mohamed Morsi i said my sincere condolences to his family and to the gyptian people out of her small shell has covered egypt extensively he says morsi stepped will try the spotlight on Political Prisoners in egypt. The question is whether this will be a watershed moment for the movement thats had lobbied around the demand for his return egypts 1st democratically elected president to resign whether they will now find a new cause celebre to rally around whether they can create from howard morsi a legacy as the person who personified the free will of the egyptian people through those one and only democratic elections to take place in egypts history and then build upon that that is something that a lot of people will be asking but whats significant to note here and this is something that a lot of journalists will be looking into is that there are other significant figures currently in jail who are also facing similar issues so you have for example of the doctor was a former president ial candidate himself whose family just a couple of weeks ago issued a statement saying that his health severely his life is also under threat because of the severe deterioration because of the intentional lack of treatment hes receiving there are several others weve had many deaths from from the ark of the former general of the Muslim Brotherhood also who died in jail so this is also indicative of the fact that there are 40000 of not more Political Prisoners in egypt in the conditions they are being held and is what allows for them to die or essentially what leads to them to be killed as many of their supporters and human rights organizations have been describing that eric has maintained close relations with current egyptian president at del fertile city despite widespread allegations of rights abuses against an ministration or correspondent has more from paris on egypts links with iran. Of the beginning of the arab spring into 1011 all the way to 2012 when. It became president france along with European Countries one of the view that it would be much better to include religiously conservative groups like. The Muslim Brotherhood in egypt and another in tunisia and build inclusive political processes in the middle east and in north africa but i think when they saw the situation further deteriorate in libya in yemen and in syria and when are the fatah has sisi took over in a military coup in its of the decided to shift their support for of the fatah has he said for Different Reasons france in particular became the biggest supplier of weapons to the Egyptian Government selling fighter jets weapons warships to egypt saying that this could help the Egyptian Government prevent the rise of armed groups which were taken advantage of the volatile situation of that expanding to libya in yemen and syria and also your boss or Northern Africa and this by the accusations by human rights agencies as you were wise activists of the clampdown on or on the Muslim Brotherhood and her mother on mostly and his aides on activists in. Egypt. French government is saying basically that its position is just to find the man with my quote was quoted as saying that france decided to take a program attic this is the term he is a pragmatic stance when it comes to providing significant military assistance to the Egyptian Government and i think from that moment on they decided. To turn the chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood and this is that most likely were not going to see to see any strong reaction coming from from the french government about the death of the former president Mohammed Morsi. The gyptian revolutionary council which is a Group Opposed to the current government said in the statement president morsi chose to sacrifice his freedom and ultimately his life and defense of the democratic rights of the egyptian people to control their own destiny by standing up to a military coup and refusing to step down to bestow legitimacy on a military coup the r. C. Calls on all human rights organizations and all western governments to pressure the military regime in egypt to accept an independent 3rd Party Investigation into has death which we maintain was a result of a premeditated policy by the military regime and ever 2017 Mohamed Morsi spoke about the conditions of his imprisonment he said he had no access to his lawyers or medical treatment the since the 20th of september ive been in prison and ive been isolated there at the last minute in front of me i tried to speak to the coach of a different problems but the court decided not to him to see me after so many days when they turn on the lights it was very painful i cant see the code except in shadows sometimes i hear the witnesses and sometimes they dont but i am speaking very clearly ive got a lot to see to the court havent seen a doctor and i am as you may know is i have a right to be seen and to be present i am in a very very bad situation if you treat me and this me i am having im extremely worried about egypt. I fahmy is an associate professor of Political Science at Long Island University and author of egypt and the contradictions of liberalism he joins us live from new york we appreciate your time so much so Mohammed Morsi there describing what the conditions were for him and prison who was advocating on his behalf. So we did see reports out of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch we did see a parliamentarian from the u. K. Last year and they all agreed that the conditions he was kept in would lead to his premature and imminent death and so these calls were made 2 and 3 years ago and as recently as last year and yet they fell on deaf ears today is shocking in terms of its the death of a president that was democratically elected but its not surprising this is we have seen it coming for quite some time and when the president himself called for an independent best occasion and didnt get it it begs the question now in 2015 when Prime Minister hariri died in a plane accident the International Community called for an independent investigation and it was actually led by the United Nations into this sudden death of the Prime Minister and what we have heard out of the United Nations the United States the european leaders is silence and so the question is why is there not a call for the independent investigation of the death every world leader at the hands of another dalia and so the the bigger question is what does this mean what about why such a a muted response to the death of a former president only in his sixties dying in prison this way why such a muted response. Right taking into custody at the age of 61 dying at the age of 67 begs the question of how is this possible now when the International Community especially western nations remain silent it sends a very clear signal that the democratic aspirations of people in the arab world is falling on deaf ears that there is not a question of Good Governance accountability and its not only the question of where do we take into account the fact that a world leader died because of Health Conditions much of his cabinet and leadership is in the same circumstances now there are 60000 Political Prisoners in egypt many of whom have already died the reports have accounted for the death of 2500. 00 already those of disappeared women who are victims of mass rape in prisons the disappearance of children extrajudicial killings and even those fall on deaf ears now a few months ago on this very program when i when i was asked about well present my crime has said that you know the Human Rights Violations will need to be accounted for well then why is still france still selling great amounts of arms to egypt more so than any other western nation why does President Trump here in the United States continue to say c. C. Is doing a great job even in terms of the war on terror hes failing and so the question is if western nations continue to see stability in the region through the iron handed fist what were asking ourselves is is this really reality hes failing in the war on terror hes failing in terms of domestic stability and this the leaders death of a world leader in a prison indicates that the democratic aspirations of egyptians and arabs in general are not only lost but are no longer part of the agenda of the west towards the middle east where did it go wrong for Mohamed Morsy i realize he wasnt president very long but obviously its a very significant thing what what went wrong. What went wrong is that he had aspirations that seem to have questioned the status quo in my research on the policies of president morsi we ultimately start to see was that if his leadership was going to continue to take hold the entire region would have to take into account a different kind of egypt in egypt that was actually going to possibly be an emerging leader rather than just mean taming the status quo and it would it means to be an emerging leader is that the amount of violence in the region syria or yemen or does could not continue and so when the threat to the region is that the stability in status quo as perceived as leading to the future is taken into account and that stability and the status quo is not could not possibly lead to justice we have to ask ourselves who are the winners and the losers in this case domestically inside of egypt the losers who are going to be the military it was going to be a different kind of egypt internationally in the region we were going to have to ask take into account the role of saudi arabia the role of the u. A. E. The role of. Of of syria in the region but really the role of the United States in places like in yemen and so the question is what would a changing egypt do to a changing the region and domestically while there was a lot of Popular Support there actually was Popular Support and so the quote begs the question if he was democratically elected into office why was he not democratically elected out of office 10 months in office kidnapped a military coup and then death at the hands of those who took him needs to ask where is the International Community where is the United Nations where are the calls for in the penn investigation we will have to see if those calls come in the coming hours and days dahlia fahmy thank you so much for joining us from new york where you appreciate it. Its wreckage from washington now the u. S. Says it is sending about a 1000 additional troops to the middle east the pentagon says that and response to irans hostile behavior and comes just hours after the u. S. Military released new pictures that it says shows Iranian Revolutionary guards removing an unexploded mine from a japanese owned vessel it was one of 2 oil tankers where there was an explosion last week in the gulf of oman. Acting secretary of defense Patrick Shanahan and he said approximately 1000 u. S. Has received on hostile behavior by Iranian Forces and their proxy groups now the addition of these 1000 u. S. Troops is an escalation on top of the 1500 u. S. Military members who were already deployed recently to the region along with u. S. Warships on the diplomatic front the white house responding to irans announcement earlier in the day that it would soon breach the 2015 Nuclear Accord by enriching uranium beyond the limit the white house said it was it was and it was going to continue with the u. Strategy of maximum pressure on iran calling for International Allies to join in that effort and the secretary of state might earlier in the day said all options were on the table foreshadowing this announcement of the 1000. 00 additional u. S. Military troops deployed to the region by saying that those options included a military response or show that he has a better response from congress. Well leading up to this members of congress have been more measured as far as a military response to ron they have noted that a declaration of war would require congressional power a congressional authorization and it is notable that in this announcement of the the additional 1000. 00 troops being deployed that the pentagon was careful to say that this was only for defensive purposes and that the u. S. Does not seek conflict with iran now in the u. S. House of representatives debate is expected this week or next where democrats are intending to make clear that. That interim cannot go to war with iran without u. S. Will begin show morticia among the countdown has started in 10 days time on june 27th we will exceed the 300 kilogram limit of enriched uranium allowed under the nuclear deal after thats we will continue to increase the speed of production drastically. Under the Nuclear Deal Iran is allowed to have 300 kilograms of 3. 67 percent enriched uranium at any given time inside the country. Anything in excess of that amount must be sold internationally but since the United States withdrew from the deal a may of last year it has also introduced restrictions on purchasing any material from Irans Nuclear program which means irans stockpile will continue to increase. Early last month president Hassan Rouhani announced tehran will stop exporting its excess uranium and heavy water for a 60 day period during which time it wants the remaining signatories of the deal to honor their obligations as they announce are not going to break the agreement there are going to go as far as possible to the threshold because when they break the agreement they will lose european support and for now this is not the iranian strategy to completely go for clear violation and break of the agreement a number of high ranking foreign officials have been visiting tehran in an effort to save this deal including a rare visit by japanese Prime Minister shinzo who told irans Supreme Leader that he had brought a letter from President Donald Trump but Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said trump did not deserve a response how many who has alternate authority in iran says the government will not negotiate any further iran maintains it has kept up its end of the deal 15 reports produced by the international Atomic Energy agency have concluded that tehran is complying with the Nuclear Agreement iran says the future of this nuclear deal is now in the hands of the 3 main european signatories france britain and germany and president rouhani has warned that the stability and security of the entire region is at stake but many analysts say that without the United States its difficult to see how this deal can work for such a party aljazeera to iran. Is known for targeting civilians kidnapping and lots of people including schoolgirls as well as individuals in the northeast and in particular targets civilian population those it consider that mostly as an enemy and as an enemy in its fight against the nigerian state the international the Islamic State in west africa probably its ally groups actually operate in the other side of border and stood out though theyve been known to of made some incursions in southern parts of borno state however it has the i swap groups of books known to of targeted mainly military facilities military personnel and of course some few civilians in the region for years after the algiers peace accord from mali at the end and observer to the implementation process says both the government and armed groups are in breach of the agreement nicholas hawkeyes more from the capital bamako where an emergency meeting was held. Its behind these closed doors that there is an extraordinary meeting of those that have signed the algiers peace accord there are the armed groups there is the government and Different International actors theyre meeting because the situation has gone from bad to worse with more violence in the center of the country the algerian foreign minister addressed the people here in this room saying that the situation is spiraling out of control with more than 4000 People Killed in this hell in the last year this circle feel the house being as many People Killed in 2018 in a local conflict a long one in the possibly years of war if only the peace accord was in place there wouldnt be all these weapons suit relating weapons that are responsible for the tragedies that we are seeing now in certain areas of mali. Which story it also has an armed rebellion in the north of the country is spreading and is affecting the very fabric of society where full armies are attacking dogo and dugongs are attacking full lonnies the foreign minister of mali says the unity of the country is at stake you need to come to this new level it is important that all those dots signed the agreement whether the government or groups play their role and enforce it with sincerity. The problem is many of the groups that are now active in mali like the group the sliming state in the greater say. In stride obviously well mostly means are not in this room negotiating for peace with the mahdi and government in so many are questioning whether the algiers force is no longer obsolete while at the Carter Center the independent observer of the accord goes further saying the government and armed groups are backsliding are not keeping to this to their commitment and so mali is even further away from peace. 6 faithful including 5 fighters belonging to the Kurdish Forces have been killed.
