Another would be candidate to become the president of egypt is arrested soldiers detained. After the armys former chief of staff announced plans to run against the current president of the c. C. Turkey who says its operation all of ground in Northern Syria is going successfully as planned. Forces take over several villages in a free in. Dies leaving behind a rich legacy of activism and music the man known as the South African king of jazz and who rallied for the freedom of Nelson Mandela has lost his battle with cancer and i are here in the comments monitoring all the told at the World Economic forum in davos throughout the show using the hash tag a. J. News greg. Miller the news were live on air were streaming online through you to face. Book live and al jazeera dot com thanks for joining us soldiers in egypt have arrested the armys former chief of staff days after sami on an announced his bid to become President Army commanders say ananda fail to obtain permission to campaign for the election in march well hes also been accused off forgery by trying to be included in the voter database or other president ial candidates have also been detained the former Prime Minister ahmed shafik announced he was in the race two months ago while in the United Arab Emirates the u. A. E. Denied stopping him from leaving he was eventually deported to egypt family said they were able to talk to him in cairo but he later rejected any suggestion of kidnapping and withdrew his bid to become president and theres another potential contender has until the end of the month to secure enough signatures to challenge sisi but he is facing a charge of offending public decency that verdict is expected in march and if his guilty verdict is upheld he would be disqualified from running for the presidency the nephew of assassinated president anwar sadat and his run for egypts top job last week Mohamed Anwar sadat said he would not stand either because the climate was not right for free elections and a published interview he also said he would work towards twenty twenty two since the current president would be ineligible to run then lets talk about this with what hes a professor of Security Studies at the Doha Institute joining us here in the studio thanks for coming in. Were your initial reaction to these developments with with ana and with say im surprised but its true the thought there will probably be a crackdown and within and skis its to snow to use you that he has and will fold this meeting that he has some loyalists. Within the military institution and Security Institution and therefore there was this balance of terror between that which deter them from doing Something Like that in detaining him or he miscalculated his support and he attempted to go forward based on more or less that superiority complexes and seeing that the office of the bank someone that he presided upon in the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Just in twenty eleven is now being the president of egypt and therefore he can challenge that this was someone from the ruling establishment formerly so you were mentioning sort of a counterreaction do you expect a counterreaction on the part of his loyalists it is a possibility everything at the moment is a possibility this is not just someone from the ruling establishment this is the deputy head of the Supreme Council of the armed forces the former chief of staff someone who is accused of architect or being the architect of the twenty for britain to eleven coup against mubarak so is is very well connected i think he had president ial ambitions during the time when he was in Supreme Council of the armed forces but now what is interesting is the whole Supreme Council now has changed the one thousand generals that were who were with egypt back in twenty eleven the only one oh dont you two that exist from them from these nineteen is sisi as a president and the minister of defense that rest of them are all gone are retired pushed aside marginalized and hes one of them so i think he would find some support among these nineteen generals but they dont exist anymore as the top at the top of the armed forces and one of our facebook viewer is saying no one can run for presidency anymore assisi is the new mubarak is that a point of view that you you agree with because this is quite unprecedented isnt it and hes the fourth candidate and is the fourth if im not mistaken the fourth candidate to to face prosecution or face the tension when it comes to this president ial election it is unprecedented in one end but also this is not mubako mubarak that no one dared to go against him except once into southern five and i mean we know that the case there was even against him and he was not from the middle east up. Anyway he was more of an opposite civilian opposition candidate but to go against multiple figures from the military that higher rank this is disses quite new the only thing that you know maybe maybe theres some comparisons when the minister of defense and the head of the intelligence back tried to challenge that back in one hundred seventy and he tested them all but there was not president ial election so this is this is a very very new nothing like that compared before but also what is interesting is that this is happening at the very high ranks so level you know the former head of the air force general don unleveled reaction of the mid ranks would be quite interesting to see because we know that the higher ranks now are c. Z. Loyalists most of them because he appointed them closer to the action of them this is worth something this is not the end of the story he will probably see some the actions and possible counteroffensive official registration for the candidates closes on january the twenty ninth who is going to be left standing right now there is but also he is facing some sort of court case it is less likely to go through because of the court case on one end but i would think that they will put somebody who is not there threatening someone in was very threatening shift was very threatening even despite the you know the lack of you know military muscle if you wish he was a bit frightening but now well have to wait and see who will come up probably somebody whos not whos does not have that much support on the ground does not have any support in the military establishment but we also have to see how this story unfolds because i dont think if some of the miscalculated this big time he will end up in jail i dont think that was his plan and i dont i think hes probably the more complex than that ok thank you for giving us your analysis of how are people reacting to this story online thats been a really strong reaction to this story daryn the first let me just take you back this was the first way to announcing some we are now arrest it was posted by his Campaign Manager who said that he was detained alongside thirty others by this regime and call for a star. To terrorism by president sisi and this has triggered a strong reaction online yet us law says that it looks like sisi was afraid of a challenge by egypts former army chief and womens rights activist this is one of the holy she called the president ial race a farce and the analysts who shun hellyeah says that this play makes it clear to everyone in and out of the system that this is a soak this is a closer rina which means dissent will inevitably take other routes and this is not a good idea and then we also heard from the very well known author called a swanny in arabic so ill translate it for you he says thats khaled ali needs to pull out of this fast and let sisi competes with himself in front of the whole world so are you in egypt want to get your thoughts on this connect with us throughout the show using the hash tag a. J. Newsgroup or message me directly im at raynham it very. Well tsunami warnings along the u. S. And canadian west coast have been cancelled after the region was hit by a powerful earthquake. In the city of kodiak people were woken up in the middle of the night by the tsunami warning sirens and those warnings were heeded with people flocking to Evacuation Centers runnels joining us live from los angeles to talk us through what happened and i imagine there must be relief rob now that the tsunami warnings have been lifted. Yes indeed tureen you can see the sun is now rising over the Pacific Ocean bringing to an end what was an anxious night for many people all along the most of the coast of north america and particularly for people in alaska about two hundred fifty kilometers from the center of this seven point nine magnitude earthquake initially tsunami warnings went out for that area and as we just saw people in the city of kodiak population about six thousand were woken by sirens and text alerts on their cell phones told to get to Higher Ground people made their way up into the hills and took shelter in high schools and other facilities to wait out the possibility of a tsunami so in any event it did not happen but it was at least a. What you might be able to say was a good test of the tsunami Warning System that is in place by to warn of these things using hooey and seismographs and so forth to to keep an eye on. These kinds of natural phenomena and of course we dont have complete knowledge of how it all works but better safe the story all right scase. The warning was out but there was no tsunami ok rob reynolds thank you the turkish army says its making advances in its operation to push kurdish y. P. G. Forces outs of Northern Syria which is now in its fourth day the main action has been so far in the enclave a five fifteen in the border area. On tuesday several villages were captured in the region turkeys state media reporting that Ground Forces also advanced stuff offaly and in syrias districts turkeys president says the next target will be men because thats the syrian town that was recaptured from iceland twenty sixteen by a kurdish led force also backed by the u. S. But opposed by turkey Stephanie Decker monitoring developments joining us from the turkey syria border so turkey is saying that its taken a new village stephanie in other words the fighting just appears to be very fluid bring us up to speed it is fluid there is a back and forth to read youll have an announcement of a village taken by the f. S. A. And then the white takes it a day later so but this village the announcement its called him why is it significant in southwest of often but its very close to the border with turkey so this is a line of what the Prime Minister was saying earlier few days ago that they want to create this sort of buffer zone security zone as you called it up to thirty kilometers around that border that turkey has with but this is the y. P. G r formidable fighters they know the terrain very well that turkey has the superiority in terms of aircraft jets bombing from the sky which of course gives them an advantage and as for the situation inside awfully in itself for people there whats what are you hearing. When managing to get through to a few people comes are very bad during the internets been cut off the general message that weve been getting is that people dont seem to be leaving the city itself of course theyre there is there is relative concern but in general life seems to be continue as normal we have heard that people have left the border areas you were mentioning because there is that shelling coming from the Turkish Border we witnessed it yesterday throughout the day very heavy bombardment and artillery going on but in general they say that the morale is high that the y. P. G. Says that theyre not going to give up their areas but of course with anything and more during this soon as it gets closer to the city to our civilians our it is a huge concern and one earlier once i was that he has an agreement with russia on our freedom what exactly could he mean by that and how much coordination is there going on between the turks and the russians. Well there some kind of an agreement in the words of the turkish president what was obvious to anyone who follows syria they knew that russia controlled the skies of roughly it also had made it to personnel in the province so there was no way that this was going to be able to be carried out by anchor without some kind of consent from russia to allow to fly their planes well thats happened now you have to offer what is the trade off because nothing happens in syria its a negotiating game its a bartering game durian its a chess game at the expense of the syrians i think the big question you mentioned there this is you know a town further east that edge one has said will be the next target will be very interesting what happens there if hell do it or if its just rhetoric because that youre entering americas fear of influence and what the americans are going to do in return so as you can imagine a very complicated and a very International Conflict ok Stephanie Decker thank you for that update lets bring in rami who he is a professor at the American University of beirut is also senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy school joining us from beirut itself thanks for speaking to us on that point that i made that he had an agreement with the russians when it came to. What would the russians have gotten in return would there have been a trade off there. Oh presumably that the russians would dump would do it affirms that they are the final arbiters of what happens militarily in syria particularly in Northern Syria and they would probably also affirm that they will be the ones who will figure out what happens in any kind of political transition in the future if the turks are allowed to push back the kurdish groups and syria that doesnt particularly matter to the to the russians but it means that the turks and the russians will probably have much more from the ability to agree on future transitions in syria with the iranians iran turkey and russia are the three most important parties right now who are engaged in diplomatic and in some cases military action on the ground to the for the future of syria the americans are in there but they tend to be responding and theyre in a much more patchy situation and its still not clear what the long term policy is for the u. S. Is it to fight isis is it to. Develop a border zone is it to keep the iranians out is it to confront the russians american policies all over the place as it has been for some years but the russians clearly have a lot to gain if they have an understanding with turkey because they will gain benefits Strategic Command if its in return also everybody is aware that the turks are not going to play softball in this theyre not going to take it easy on any of these issue for them any possible Turkish Military force or nationalist development on his border as they see it as a threat theyve spent the last hundred forty years seeing powers all over the world nibble away take away their former Ottoman Empire and then gradually develop a new forces Turkish Forces particularly in iraq and now in syria independent states all around them and theyre not going to let anything happen that allows. And they did munition of turkeys turkey nationalist president s as it is now i wont lets just look at the role of the americans for just a moment i mean this came out earlier this month the u. S. And iran saying of the establishment off that border force that thirty thousand strong american backed kurdish sleds border force what is the ultimate aim with that for the americans i dont think the americans know and even their own secretary of state tillerson has to kind of walk that back a little bit the basic idea. Is to presumably in the beginning was to protect the kurds like they helped to protect the kurds in Northern Iraq a couple of decades ago and to push back the iranians presumably those were the two main american aims in this kind of idea of a border force that would be made up as this is their way of trying to keep some sort of leverage in syria. Is that what theyre doing here. Certainly it is but if it is its not very effective like most of what the u. S. Has done in syria its imprecise inconsistent and probably wont work very well because if theyre trying to push back the russians and the iranians and at some point possibly work out a normal relationship with the turks who are supposed to be the nato allies the us has not been very clear about any of these really important strategic relationships that now come together in syria so well probably see the american explanation for this border force or whatever they want to call it will see that evolve over time. The Americans Still say that fighting isis is one of their priorities but theyve also now added pushing back in iran and the problem for the americans is that for the last ten or fifteen years theyve been trying to push back iran all over the region and all over the region iran is just developing stronger footholds and strategic relationships with various local allies now its at the level of the iranians and the russians and the turks in some cases working together not always but so theres a problem with the coherence and efficacy of American Foreign policy in the middle east generally when it gets to syria incoherence turns into a bit of absurdity actually in comedy but this is part of the american learning process but the key thing here is the powers in the region and globally the americans the russians iranians turks saudis others theyre all learning now that they have to renegotiate reconfigure their relationships once the battle against isis has been pretty much done which it is to a certain extent now the main isis group has been defeated now its a big power struggle were back to one nine hundred twenty in the middle east where the big powers worked over fought over syria and turkey and iraq in the those regions that became syria and turkey and iraq and in a way that nothing much has changed over the last hundred years or so well have to wait and see how it all the nature of the powers unfolds that im included thank you for speaking to us on the news great on aljazeera. Hello some of the coldest air around the moment on the planet is just drifting into cassocks time are running up against that is this cloud this represents high speed wind up in the atmosphere so its just plowed really with this this is lower stuff and not over turkeys or develop into something over another winter storm which will slam through the levant during the weekend but this is the picture on wednesday seventeen. Sky skies filling with cloud rain started to fall in cyprus for example highest tention el monte minus twelve and far away geographically plus twelve in tashkent so you see the cold is hiding up here and it will stay there i think but as i say this developing system in the eastern med so thats the picture for thursday not a particularly pleasant one for lebanon or indeed syria nor turkey vast amounts of snow here south of it all nothing much is happening the breezes cut off or times will be up slowly in qatar still thirty one in mecca suggestion the cloud will build on the western side of society but i think it will stay dry all the same we seeing quite a few big showers recently in south africa which is you know been largely dry some rain falling that was welcome maybe a few more showers around i suppose and maybe the focus. Back to syria for a moment because activists there are accusing Government Forces of another chemical weapons attack at least twenty one people suffered breathing difficulties in a besieged rebel held area near damascus mondays incidents is expected to be discussed by the u. S. Secretary of state and diplomats from around thirty countries and there in paris to discuss how its discussed how to catch and prosecute chemical weapons attackers that is where Natasha Butler is joining us from so how will this new anti Chemical Weapons Group actually work natasha. Well what you have is Foreign Ministers from thirty countries gathered in paris to launch this group and the way that they say it work is that they will share more intelligence on kept chemical weapons use they will share evidence or proof and try and preserve proof after there are Chemical Attacks and theyll try and push for sanctions on countries that are. Deemed to be guilty of carrying out Chemical Attacks its all about trying to stop the use and the spread of chemical weapons across the world now you might be able to see actually those Foreign Ministers coming out just behind me they have been meeting already this is a family photo before they actually launch this new network and the idea that were told behind this is from saying look around the world many countries have decided to sign a convention basically banning the use of chemical weapons but they are still being used of course as a great focus here on syria a country that the u. N. Says the Syrian Regime un says has used chemical weapons several times over the last few years so that really is the focus and we were speaking to Human Rights Watch to the u. N. Director of Human Rights Watch and what he told us was this initiative is very important of course it is anything that helps prevent the use of chemical weapons is essential but what is really needed is a real investigation by the u. N. Security council. We shouldnt let the Security Council get off easy the russians have used their veto eleven times since the war started in syria in two thousand and eleven we cant let them get a pass here they can do things and anything that this meeting that the french are setting up can do to put pressure on the russians and others to make sure that the Security Council gets back in its chairs does its business will be a good thing but for the un Security Council to step up is not going to be an easy feat because its often very divided on many issues. We had an earlier this year you had to the chief of the u. N. And when you could terrorise actually saying look the u. N. Security council has to push ahead and try and push ahead with this investigation into chemical weapons used by syria but the problem is that russia keeps using its veto as you heard there eleven times to try and block that investigation because russia backs the Syrian Regime the Syrian Regime deny that they are using chemical weapons so its an extremely difficult and delicate situation but nevertheless the Foreign Ministers here hope that this new initiative will in some way put pressure on the u. N. Security council and on the russians to push forward with a full investigation theyre not saying that this group is going to replace the u. N. Security council but perhaps it can help move things forward ok. Reporting from paris thank you so were seeing outside that meeting on the chemical weapons being held in france there it is thats where those attending the meeting just posed for a group photo moments ago and theyre walking back inside into the building we should mention here some breaking news out of the u. S. State of kentucky as well thats where a shooting at a school in Marshall County has left one person dead the gunman has been arrested thats all we know so far were keeping across our story will get you more information as we get it so its over to the clark for the time being with more of the International News heinecke hi daryn thanks very much first up United States Vice President my presence has visited the western wall in occupied East Jerusalem during the second and final day of his visit to israel the wall in the old city is one of the holiest sites in judea is shown around the site by a red light in the day he met the israeli president really. Memo says its ready to start repatch rating range of muslims back into the country despite bangladesh announcing a delay on monday theyve agreed to allow the return of around three hundred range a day seven hundred thousand refugees fled across the border since me a modest military crackdown began and began a crackdown in the refined state in august described by the un as ethnic cleansing bangladesh says its concerned that refugees up being forced to return. Indias Prime Minister has warned against what he calls the threats to global civilization as he made the opening address at the World Economic forum in switzerland renderer modi also cautioned that protectionism is spreading three thousand delegates including seventy well the leaders are attending this is summit in the ski resort of davos a u. S. President donald trump will close the gathering on thursday and lets be not so one general whos in davos forests donald trump on his way is davos ready for the u. S. President. Well there are avalanche warnings in place today nick i can tell you double has had more snow in the last week than its had in since one thousand nine hundred ninety which was the last time a u. S. President visited here that was bill clinton whether theyre more concerned about avalanches or donald trump arriving is the big question though because of course as candidate trump he was pretty unkind about the global elite the sort of people who gathered here were dismissed by his team as the party of davos well a year in office and he is indeed as you say on his way arriving on wednesday or thursday probably more likely and hes due to give the closing address on friday which is probably the most anticipated moment of the week and everyone here will be watching and waiting to see whether perhaps he uses the opportunity to to reach out to the global elite to try and make peace with them to extend the hand of the u. S. Economy to the Global Economy once again or whether he needles them whether he and tag and ises his audience on friday with talk of America First his policy of economic nationalism protectionism essentially which is anathema here and as you said and demoted the indian Prime Minister who opened the davos week with a speech a couple of hours ago here warn that protectionism was in danger of threatening globalization and i think will be seen by many here as a thinly veiled sort of attack aimed at donald trump our general what else is happening there davus. Because you said there are seventy World Leaders heads of state and government as well as just about every c. E. O. Business big businessman thinker political policy maker technologist and so on is gathered here all the ngos as well of course theres a list as long as my arm of big themes and topics being discussed the the biggest perhaps of us talking about gender inequality and wealth inequality having if you like its its me to moment pushing womens issues way up to the top of the agenda and also looking at bridging this enormous wealth inequality that exists in the world for a morning that Global Growth can only continue there if there is something of a boom going on here now in the world now which people are very happy about here can only continue if inequality is brought down the ngos at the same time warning that that gap has grown increasingly large the worlds eight richest people many of them here indeed own as much wealth they say is the worlds poorest four billion so those are some of the themes and topics under discussion or thats a picture in devils general thanks very much indeed. That is it from london will be back in just a little under thirty minutes from now its back to daryn and rick thank you what will stay with us for just a moment because i imagine some interesting conversations online surrounding the World Economic forum or here are what are you seeing well while this event is meant to address some of the worlds most pressing issues like john i did say things like Global Economy politically uncertainty as well a second ology and i did mention that gender equality was also a hot topic so lets go to some detail for you now this comes off for a weekend of rallies in the u. S. And around under around the world against the gens up pay gap and Sexual Harassment but reports in twenty seventeen by the World Economic forum did say that women across the world are still ironing less than men so much so that the gap won because for two hundred and seventeen is now ironically the old guys. Did announce that just twenty one percent of the three thousand participants attending this year are women and thats only a slight rise compared to the previous years it was nine percent in two thousand and two and now our critics are also using the phrase divorce man or woman to refer to attendees same the meeting is just an exclusive gathering for global elites and also traditionally american president s dont usually attend this event but this year as a chorus on the mention of donald trump is going to be there and he is the first u. S. President to do so since bill clinton did in two thousand and two a trump is expected to push his America First agenda contradicting the theme this year at the forum which is creating a shared future in a fractured world now its raised some eyebrows online catherine adds that davos is of zero relevance to average folks and a giant waste of tax money from many nations and harry says that we must stop believing it or hoping that solutions for the World Economic forums problems will be found at davus. Now most notably is always new present this is emma cimarron gaga hes attending davis for the fest time and he joins ten other African Leaders his main message is to put zimbabwe back on the map he says in zimbabwe is open for business and the country has experienced political and economic strain for many is under the former president Robert Mugabe and he hopes a throwback investors and International Capital and to the country so send us all false what impact do you think an event like the World Economic forum has in reality connected aussies in the hash tag a. J. News great omas me directly im at raynham it sorry and if youre still wondering whats the World Economic forum and why does davos actually matter you can go to our website so aside from jet setting elite there are more than nine hundred representatives from n. News grid well new videos have emerged showing african refugees being abused in libya and illegal Detention Center as an extortion have become common as you may know just a warning you may find some of the pictures and some of binge of aids report disturbing. This man stripped naked is being told to stay silent as hes burned with whatsit to be built on plastic. In another video people are being beaten his kidnappers discuss ransom money these videos are reportedly of sudanese refugees being abused in libya. Disease or cannot verify the pictures. But the humiliation and abuse of african migrants here is not new libya is a major hub for human smugglers and traffickers the use the country as a transit for a perilous journey to europe some officials have been accused of taking bribes to free people from illegal Detention Centers where people are kept under inhumane conditions but Libyan Forces deny the allegations that some are involved in rape forced labor and even murder the poorly equipped navy and coast guard say theyre doing europes job of policing seventeen hundred kilometers of coastline and the mediterranean the Navy Spokesman says the issue of migrant abuse is being fabricated to force international intervention. And usually. They want to make Illegal Immigrants victims and to make libya look like the culprit perhaps when these things proliferate the International Community will be urged to intervene in libya under the pretext of illegal immigration this is part of their plan that. Libya has been fragmented between two governments and many militias vying for power last year the videos of african migrants being sold in slave auction sparked an International Outcry but libyans accused european nations of not doing enough and see the onus of dealing with migrants from across africa has been dumped on libya and libya did not and cannot play the role of a police this relationship needs to be organized an International Conference between the libyans and Northern European states should resolve how libya can deal with part of the matter as all that cant be imposed on libya we cannot be a cemetery or residence or a jail. Despite the crackdown by libyan and italian navies more than one hundred thousand migrants reached italy last year at least three thousand people died in boats which couldnt withstand the rough mediterranean waters Rights Groups say the strategy to turn people away hasnt worked and open new avenues but abuse and exploitation after years of failure europe and libya need a new approach some of. Their. Gear is for a moment and tell you about scientists in greece because what theyve done is theyve reconstructed the face of a woman who lived nine thousand years ago she is named dawn and this offers a glimpse into life in ancient athens says johnson reports she died aged between fifteen and nineteen years old but her hard worn looks suggest someone twice that age height of a little more than one and a half metres suggests limited nutrition and doctors say she had difficulty with her hip dawn as shes being called probably lived her natural lifespan at a time when life took a great toll on the body the Athens University orthodontist who led a team of scientists studying her says there is no sign of a violent death in the program dawn used to mouth as a sort of tool for example eskimos used to soften steel skins with their teeth door was born with a normal job but has moved forward with use we dont know what she did with. Her skull was scanned and reproduced in a three d. Printer her face was then built up around the copy of her skull the tendons muscles and skin laid on in layers the bone structure providing information about where the muscles with the coast dawn was so named because she lived at the dawn of modern civilization around nine thousand years ago the glaciers were receding across europe and the continent was awakening to the temperate climate we enjoy today people like dawn were transitioning from hunting and gathering to growing their own food. Evidence from the cave reflects that transition dawn would have eaten wild game and fruit but also the produce of agriculture kept goats and some grains. Life in dawns day was tough she reminds me of the mountain dwelling women of decades ago who chopped and carried firewood and sheep it did livestock but the missile looked like period was a paradise compared to what came before and after the climate mean they could find for days only and did a bit of agriculture later on people had to found more intensively because the population was growing. Yet the caves population grew with agriculture as many as thirty four people lived in it at the height of its occupation peabodys he says digging that she understood why they preferred it it was cool in summer and warm in winter and a fact constructed housing has really been able to reproduce jumpstart opal us aljazeera athens. And now for a story of earths off the grid its quite literally rahula off the grid and also off the map diary lets break it down though the louvre in abu dhabi this is the new has decided to make its own interpretation of the arabian gulf map one without cuts and in this is what the map looked like in the museum now this is what it looks like in reality this incident has created some tension so in a ready complicated situation in the region the u. A. E. Along with saudi arabia bahrain and egypt have cut ties with qatar this happens last june and the president of qatar as Museum Authority and also the mir of qatar a sister my also tweeted this she said that people visit museums to acquire knowledge and then about world country would world cultures through the exploration of objects on display now though the notion of museums is a new one to be surely the louve is not ok with this now from the u. S. Perspective the minister of Foreign Affairs and war goddess should respond by saying i followed the tweet from the president of qatar museum or thorazine where she exaggerated a small mistake in the louve gift shop in abu dhabi the culture continues to be higher than these smaller things. But apparently the new hobby dubey has replaced the faulty map according to an emirates a newspaper the paper quotes at the museums inaccuracy was an oversight and so they have replaced the map on display but that was not before cutter is reacted with some humor to that situation the chair of the qatar twenty twenty two world cup and also that the amirs brother Shaikh Mohammad bin hamad replied with his version of a map this is showing where the world cup was placed with because you can see there in the qatars place and then there was this image thats been going the rounds as well showing the solar system but instead of you can see the usa. Of the museum open just last november to mark a partnership between france and the u. A. E. So my music is just as well known as his devotion to the Antiapartheid Movement in south africa his song bring him home back home became a rallying cry for the release of Nelson Mandela he was at one time married to fellow activist and sing your Miriam Makeba massacre who was Seventy Eight massacre was Seventy Eight excuse me. Is a political analyst and cultural commentator joining us from johannesburg thanks very much for joining us on the news read so he really did change the way people looked at apartheid through music how influential was he in your opinion he was a giant both here in south africa and abroad particularly in europe and north america he was as much a political activist as he was an artist and musician and in fact he regarded hes as a channel as a conduit for his activism not only his anti apartheid work but all to the social justice work post apartheid here in south africa and this of course all you speak from experience because you have personally met him what were your impressions of him and perhaps if you have a personal story to share. Yes thats absolutely he was somebody who was the most enduring thing that one remembers about him is his infectious smile and chuckle and thats how i would love to to remember him but he was also someone who could very quickly get angry for example when he remembered the injustices of the Apartheid Regime or what he saw as similar injustices big perpetrated post apart so he was somebody who really i would say you know as much as a member of controversy has been regarded himself as somebody who fought for freedom for justice for the betterment of lives of South Africans so he would i reckon say that a song like bring him back home was as much an act of sabotage against the South African apartheid government as was the blowing up of an electricity pylons here he really is up there with the likes of Nelson Mandela but how will the young South Africans and future generations remember him. I think with a great deal of affection he has been on a number of boards hes been very very committed for example to a project called the lunchbox project which aims to bring at least one good meal a day to school going South Africans he also will be remembered through the annual humus the killer festival heritage festival in silver two that takes place every year and of course through the Trevor Huddleston foundation and center which trevor had written was one of his mentors borton is first trumpet and was instrumental in getting him overseas to study at the Guildhall School of music in london so through all of these various institutions and. Initiatives he will be remembered not only by those who are present to enjoy his music but also by future generations of Young Musicians who need help to nurture and by ordinary school kids as ive said all right well leave it there we thank you very much for speaking to us on the newsgroup were here has more on the online reaction to his passing where hiller daryn the sad announcement was made by my sickness family on twitter in a statement they said that the artist passed away after a protracted and courageous battle with Prostate Cancer and that his global and activist contribution and participation in the areas of music theatre and the arts in general leaves a legacy of love sharing and vanguard creativity. Now we see waves of chippies dedicated to the death of south africas jazz theres been this is Hugh Masekela the minister of arts and culture and this is nothing he tweeted that the nation has lost one of a kind musician one of the greatest architects of africa jazz who uplift at the soul of our nation through his timeless music now South African president jacob zuma also expressed his condolences in a safe and he said that death is an immeasurable loss to the Music Industry and to the country at large and that he kept the torch of freedom alive globally fighting apartheid through his music and mobilizing international support. Grew up under the worse apartheid laws he fled white ruled south africa in the sixtys he then went on to study and play in new york with some of the biggest names in the Music Industry he was also known as bra hugh this is also a group brother hugh and to he returned home in one thousand nine hundred ninety when. It was released from jail so if you are in south africa would love to get your thoughts and to find out how you are remembering with the cuz they can see tweet us using the hash tag a new script or message me directly on that just a reminder of how you can get in touch with us here on the newsgroup as regular was saying so were on twitter or english were also on facebook at facebook dot com slash a.
