Hello im Barbara Starr and this is the news hour live from london thank you for joining us coming up in the next sixty minutes protests in the kurdish enclave of syria which turkey says its preparing to attack a new treaty for a new era britain and france sign a new border agreement and pledge to uphold their historic ties after brets it the u. N. Calls for yemens main port to stay open for vital aid deliveries when saudi restrictions begin again on friday and the deadly storm sweeps across Northern Europe killing at least six and leaving tens of thousands without power. In sport Roger Federer his form is as hot as the weather at the Australian Open with temperatures hitting all the degrees the defending champion kept his cool to progress in surround. The u. S. State department has urged turkey not to take military action against the kurdish controlled enclave inside syria turkey is not threatening the main area controlled by the u. S. Backed Syrian Democratic forces in the north east of the country but it has said it will attack the enclave around the city of a free while a freeness held by kurdish white b. G. Fighters who dominate the s. D. F. Russia also has forces in the area and turkey is actively seeking support in its planned offensive Stephanie Becker reports now from one path on the turkish side of the border where turkish tanks have been massing this week. The turkish army is steadily increasing its presence along this stretch of the Syrian Border present one has been threatening to attack the kurdish run area for almost a week now there has been sporadic shelling. Side after thousands marched on thursday in protest at turkeys aggression how to have the most with the goal of this large demonstration is to send a message to the world and especially to turkey concerning the turkish threats we will not be a fright. We came here to protest the attacks on offering we will stand by offering an outreach that. Is one of three autonomy as kurdish enclaves controlled by the Syrian Kurdish p y d party and its armed wing the y p g turkey sees the y. P. G. As an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party or p k k which it together with the us in europe consider a terrorist organization but the y. P. G. Has been working with the us to push ice a lot of syria not enough lean but further east of the Euphrates River the americans have never had a presence in africa but the russians do and africa has been relatively peaceful throughout this war and it hosts tens of thousands of internally displaced syrians it will like you know africa has been there for quite a long time its never through like you know was it a serious churches or turkey but there are going to. Probably need is this kind of nationalistic. You know. Use its military in order to be able to gain more. With the Upcoming Elections in turkey so i think that comes the doctor. You know its at the start when it comes to the attention of tertian and into a friend tensions have been stoked further in recent days by the u. S. Announcement of a socalled border force which will be based east of the euphrates along the border with turkey and iraq and the white b. G. Will form its back not. The United States and he supports a terrorist organization that threatens their kid can this be acceptable it is unacceptable and inexplicably but u. S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson says its not a border. The u. S. Role has been mis portrayed and turkey is owed an explanation he says the build up is aimed at countering the resurgence of eisel will be internally focused and is important for the stability of syria however thats not what others involved in syrias war think ankara moscow and damascus have all boys through opposition to the force once again it highlights the complicated nature of syrias war isis been pushed out of most of the territory that it once held and so the battlefield is becoming perhaps even more complicated with each side trying to carve out its fear of influence and it seems the syrians are the ones that hold the least sway of all Stephanie Decker aljazeera and. Well for more on what all of this means for the crisis in syria lets speak to him hes a Senior Editor with news a Turkish English outlet that focuses on Turkish Affairs a service thank you so much for joining us here on aljazeera theres a few different issues so lets just start with the town of free now i mean it doesnt seem to have posed a threat before so why do you think that the turkish authorities are focusing on the free and specifically now. Turkish authorities have been concerned and arguing that there are serious and real threats from our friend because theyre p. K. Key elements there even though us. See them as is syrian the more critic forces or the y. P. Force under s d f turks turks ration see them when they look at syria and the Syrian Kurdish forces they see them p. K. Care and they are doing that their tarzans of p. K. K. Elements there even though they have not been attacking turkey on the Turkish Border there are Still NationalSecurity Threat and prison are the ones arguing they have to go in and eliminate those elements i mean i guess a lot of it boils down to a basic disagreement on the nature of the why p. G. And the p y d which of course turkey sees as terrorist groups and the us and e. U. Dont not for the syrian kurds anyway theres also been the escalating factor of Rex Tillerson tillerson the us secretary of state apparently talking about a border force thirty thousand strong on the turkey syria border which of course would have members of the y p g in it he seems to have backtracked i mean what do you make of that and that statement coming out of the border force you think that the u. S. Is planning something similar and if so what would be its impact. You are right but you mentioned that us indeed appears to be backtracking but bunmi look at that us the pentagon is still telling everyone lossing that theyre going to quarantine you train equip and support the Syrian Kurdish forces and those forces how to go on though argues will be for internal stay bulleted forces not the Border Forces well this doesnt really make sense at the end of today those borders to be be protected on the syrian side by the syrian kurds and those syrian kurds will be the same forces not be are talking about so no of us does not call down border carts or force in a more but they will be Border Guards and will be us terrain sound come trained syrian kurds one of the things that has made the war in syria so intractable is that at this point there are so many countries involved almost fighting different enemies for Different Reasons and a lot of world powers its become a bit of a proxy war i mean now we know that turkey is sort of seeking moscows support to any you know if it was to start any kind of attack at in the area do you think that the situation in a free and i guess you know the y. P. G. Forces near the border does have the potential to escalate the fighting in that part of syria. I think this is a really great question Turkey Russia and iran as we all know they have been working together as a town the process to find some kind of pull to cool solution in syria but by milk at it we havent talk about it leap there is a real threat is coming out from ed lip that the Syrian Regime forces have been. Seeing their old those forces many of them in turkey supported forces bundy look at offering often is under the russian influence so even turkish inspiration has been attacking and criticizing us for offering it did really not make sense because from the beginning that have been no American Military forces present there and a couple days ago americans saying that you know this has nothing to do us even though today u. S. State Department Spokesman came out very strongly and called on turks not paying gage in wireless and not to in wait often very clearly told them not to do that so at this point turkish delegation general chief of stuff and turkish a chief of intelligence igor in must call today a kind of a get russian blessing for does offer an operation and we have not heard anything about those meetings yet so for now president our don seems to be very angry and wants to take out those elements who he sees them as threat to turkey was so far it doesnt look like that turkey has any support from either the russia or u. S. Or the western allies in a potential other hot spot in syria be interesting to see how the situation develops eleven ten year Senior Editor at. Think you for sharing your views with us. The un is calling for the yemeni portion of that to remain open beyond friday to allow the delivery of lifesaving goods to continue on tuesday the Saudi Led Coalition authorized the ports opening and the use of four u. S. Funded cranes to help offload the aid or that handles about seventy percent of yemens imports but that much from a two thousand and fifteen airstrike and the blockade by the saudi Led Military Alliance has severely restricted aid axis more than eight million yemenis are on the brink of famine and the country is suffering outbreaks of color and syria well yes is that if you regional director for the International Committee of the red cross in yemen he said the aid is critical to prevent famine the yemeni population is dependent on aid. Its ninety percent of the needs of the yemeni people are sustained for imports and as such. The restrictions on imports prevent. Flow of commercial goods and humanitarian aid from reaching the yemeni population so that is were things should be moving on lessening those resources we need more we need less restrictions on imports fuel is key and central for the survival of the population in yemen fuel is essential for the running most hospitals in the house so somebody is faltering all the forty five percent of house facilities are functioning today but fuel is also important for water water pumping stations depend on fuel. Sewage Treatment Plants depend on fuel vehicles that collect the garbage depend on fuel and all of this creates a vicious circle were the population being weakened after years of exhausting their resources and not having any more the capacity to sustain will only have more to be done makes like diphtheria coming back to them if these conditions are not treated immediately. The president and i agree on the importance of the u. K. France relationship not just to our security but to European Security they also share a border on the french side including the sometimes troubled port of kalai and a border agreement that emanuel mccrone initially had said he wanted to tear up instead britain will pay tens of millions of dollars more towards reinforcing it and helping france deal with the burden of migrants and refugees trying to reach britain it is mr mack rahms nod in the direction of common interests and continued close future ties. In the United States stopgap legislation to keep the government operating beyond friday has managed to get through a procedural hurdle in the house of representatives the u. S. Is lower house approved the rules for debating the bill that would fund federal agencies through the middle of next month the measure still has to be approved by the house and the senate before it can be signed into law by President Donald Trump our White House Correspondent kimberly have reports. Carlos rowell was brought to the United States from venezuela illegally by his parents at the age of two his university educated and now lives in chicago but is spending his vacation in washington to plead his case before lawmakers now were all here to support the dream act senator wanted to check in with you about your support for the dream act growing needs congressional support to pass a law so he can stay in the United States legally under a program called daca i dont so i think its fair that theyre playing politics with our lives i mean its really problematic and the fact that you know we are you know we are real people we are support you know we are contributors economy like my employers you know our employers are concerned about the political whats politically at stake ducker recipients like rola have become central in the debate over funding that could shut down the u. S. Government at midnight friday within required twenty eighteen government funding legislation democrats are demanding protections for doctor recipients they also want money for Health Insurance for low income children republicans are demanding money for President Trumps border wall along the southern border with mexico to stop illegal immigration they also want funding to rebuild the u. S. Military if for any reason a judge down the worst thing is what happens to our military but democrats say dr recipients are the real victims in this battle if protections arent put in place. Some protesting in the u. S. Congress were even arrested for advocating on behalf of Illegal Immigrants without status its possible a short term funding deal could keep the government open allowing time for bigger issues to be addressed the last time there was a Government Shutdown was nearly five years ago and it could happen again if democrats and republicans are able to overcome their differences. Kimberly how get aljazeera washington. And president term says his plan to build a wall along the u. S. Border with mexico has quote never changed or evolved contradicting comments made earlier by his chief of staff on wednesday john kelly told hispanic lawmakers some of terms immigration views during the campaign were quote uninformed and later he insisted trumps views that since evolved but in an apparent rebuke of kelly trying tweeted that the wall is the wall and it will be paid for by mexico holeman is on the mexico u. S. Border and he sent us this update. This thursday saw another tussle between donald trump and the Mexican Government the u. S. President claimed via twitter that this country is the most dangerous in the world that such really not true and that only his proposed will could stop the flow of drugs across the border between the two countries that claims are actually very interesting particularly since that the published report in two thousand and fifteen saying that the cartels move most of their drugs through ports of entry like the one that you can see behind us between on this side and sun diego in the United States the Mexican Government along with rebutting President Trumps claims also said that this was a shared problem that its not just about mexican supply its also about overwhelming u. S. Demand when it comes to drugs they said as well that theyre not going to negotiate over social media this of course is part of a wider picture of negotiations between President Trump republicans and democrats over government funding and also about migration issues particularly about the dreamers young people that were brought to the United States his children illegally but have been allowed to stay and allowed to work their future at the moment very much hangs in the balance but mexico at this moment is really the unwitting food in those negotiations and it doesnt like it. Well mexicans living in the United States are sending home a record amounts of money as concern grows over trumps immigration crackdown last year workers in the u. S. Transferred twenty six billion dollars a lifeline to some of mexicos poorest communities my new as love reports now from one where uncertainty over the future of these remittances has some families very worried. Who live on a cruise and her mother or handcrafting pottery the same way most of the women in the town of san marcos make a living its not always enough to make ends meet but who yanna gets help from her brother who lives in the United States. This work that i do helps us and sometimes when my brother sends money that helps us to. Ghana isnt the only person here who receives money from relatives in the u. S. This line outside a local wire service is a common sight and on most days the line can be much longer for many mexicans these remittance payments can be a way out of poverty is that says so they use this cash mainly for food to buy clothes to build their homes and they also use a very small amount for savings. Last year remittances sent from the United States increased by four percent experts say its a result of changing policies in the United States. Theres a fear among immigrants that the u. S. Government will take away what they have part of the reason for the increase in remittances is over the fear that their assets will be seized at the. Money sent home by migrants has historically been an important part of the mexican economy accounting for more than two percent of the countrys g. D. P. In two thousand and seventeen remittances outpaced all of mexicos commercial exports combined excluding oil and according to Mexico Central Bank that cash totaled twenty six point one billion dollars between january and november of last year. For families like cruz and her mother its pottery that puts food on the table but that extra cash for brother sends goes a long way in maintaining their quality of life whenever i. Walk in mexico. But francis has urged the people people of a chilean coastal town to continue to be welcoming towards migrants he made the comments during a home early in the quake which has seen a spike in migrant arrivals the increase has been so fast there are nearly two dozen slums on the outskirts of the city. Pope francis ended his most problematic tour of a catholic country in chiles northern desert city of ag care where the theme was immigration he chose it because it is home to a huge number of immigrants especially for the neighborhood and the libya. There he said there is no Christian Joy if the doors are closed to migrants if they are made to feel unwelcome a message directed far beyond chiles borders especially this week when the issue of building walls keep migrants out is again making headlines in the United States. This is been a difficult trip for the pope over shadowed by displays of anger over clerical sex abuses at almost every public appearance even after the pope had asked for forgiveness for the damage done to children by members of the Catholic Church after days of protests even by priests a clearly angry pope finally explained his controversial support for a bishop accused of covering up sex abuses if you can figure out the proof against bishop paris then i will speak there is not one bit of proof against him all of it is slander its not clear. But it was also clear is that it is not church controversy in strife torn to move goal he called on chile to end centuries of injustices against the Indigenous People while warning radical my pussy groups to abandon violence or risk destroying their just cause. Shortly before leaving chile of course through a Police Officer almost and top of his popemobile the pope got off and rushed to see if the officer was hurt how much the popes four day trip will really contribute to restoring lost faith in the Catholic Church here in chile is very hard to measure so soon from here the pope goes to neighboring peru for the second and last leg of his south American Journey well the pope has also found time to officiate the first ever airborne away. Being on board his plane hes from thing asli married to two flight attendants from chiles airline the couple tied the knot in a Civil Service in two thousand and ten but their religious ceremony was canceled because their church was badly damaged by a massive earthquake a little closer to the body of the pope married us the pope married us he took my hands and said if you want to marry that i can marry you something totally extraordinary happened to it with its come the hostess is in the store and were going to get the photos taken and once in the world cup the couple you know weve been married we met on the plane years ago thats all they said i said well thats interesting and then as i walked by that name back and said. Mary its a religious ceremony which obviously has never happened on the way before they were super happy. The first the pope heard about it was this morning too its not like it was it was part of the plan. Well they have some amazing wedding pictures now much more to come on the Program Including emirates hands the airbus a three eighty a lifeline with a deal to buy twenty of the double decker super dome. The arts thats inside your head we visit londons new Virtual Reality gallery where theyre taking creativity to another level. Was right at the limits. Is the Australian Open becoming too hot to handle for some players and they will have all the action now. How i was still got some rather blustery winds parting its a North Western parts of europe at the moment you can still see this recount which has made its way across the British Isles and across the like countries and to germany thats the one that brought those really stormy conditions quite a few trees down Power Outages and some travel disruption as a result of that looking at a blustery day as we go on through friday but nowhere near as as windy as it has been over the past twenty four i was ill so temperatures will struggle to get about seven right celsius there for london and paris still space pastes of snow but they also some snow two and a certain areas now down to the southeast across that aces out of the med it will brighten up nicely the wet weather Stormy Weather we had here recently now in the process of pulling away what it says showers there into positive rumania easing up into the ukraine further north modify the top temperature in moscow still snow over the alps the recovering there once again its some other way while making its way down across a good parts of france but it should be kwacha across England Wales and scotland as we go on into the weekend but aquatics northern parts of africa quite a chemo awfully when i was in northeast this is seventy celsius in benghazi and colorado and a similar foudy with the cloud and rip thats. When diplomacy fields and fierce we then our borders are wide open wide open to drugs terrorists weve proven the barriers are built to impose division but its not effective instead of being an obstacle to do a good job least speech it became another obstacle to peace in a four part series aljazeera revisits the reasons for divisions in different parts of the world and the impact they have on both sides walls of shame at this time on aljazeera. And then reported on the. U. S. There is a danger that trees will fall onto the overhead wires and theres a danger that trees will block lutes we know from past experience with extreme weather conditions that its better to keep the trains in some stations where we can but to take care of passengers in between stations Power Outages hits tens of thousands of people in germany belgium and another lens and roads were blocked by fallen trees and debris high winds and heavy snow also hit parts of the u. The average temperature on earth last year was hot enough to put two thousand and seventeen among the three warmest years on record the u. S. Government space and atmospheric agencies have published their annual global temperature report showing a continuing trend of long term warming temperatures he truly slow the oceans way have also played a role in boosting the readings in recent years gabriela is on the one. Youve probably heard that planet earth is getting hotter maybe where you live youve seen warmer weather or seen some of fx of Climate Change it is true weather patterns change year to year some years hotter some years colder than others but the long term trends appear clear planet earth is getting warmer. Two of the leading climate and scientific agencies in the world have released new data nasa says last year was the second warmest on record after two thousand and sixteen in a different analysis of weather trends the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or noah as its called concluded the past three years were the warmest sense eighteen eighty one Record Keeping began Scientists Say this is leading to Climate Change and they point to the arctic which is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet and melting sea ice in other parts of the world its causing coastal flooding as well but behind the statistics are people being affected there are estimates that say millions of people are climate refugees forcibly displaced by sudden weather related hazards the International Community has felt pressure to act and adopted the two thousand and sixteen Paris Climate Accord and to tackle Global Temperatures but one of the worlds biggest polluters remains uncommitted u. Authorities in turkey have removed an airliner from the shore of the black sea after it skidded off a runway at the tribes on airport on saturday a large crane was used to lift the Pegasus Airlines boeing seven three seven from the cliff edge all passengers and crew survived the accident turkish media say the pilots are blaming a sudden surge of speed from the planes right engine that force that to swerve to the left speaking of planes a new airbus order from emirates has come to the rescue of the Worlds Largest passenger aircraft whose future was hanging in the balance the dubai based airline has ordered twenty airbus a three eighty s. With the option to buy sixty more emirates is the biggest customer for the super jumbo with one hundred and one in service already and forty one more on order a double decker plane has been in Service Since two thousand and seven but this is its first new order in more than three years the deal worth up to sixteen billion dollars provides a lifeline for the european aircraft maker which had warned it would have to stop production of the a three eighty if the sale. Well the head of the university of west london and the drug says there are several reasons why the a three eighty hasnt been as successful as rivals like boeings seven eight seven dreamliner. For the airlines its fairly difficult to fill an aircraft five hundred to six hundred capacity its also a fairly large aircraft and so many airports around the world simply dont have the infrastructure or the ability to handle such a large aircraft i mean even Heathrow Airport for example has special restrictions but it is quite an expensive project and its estimated to cost of us about twenty five billion u. S. Dollars and thats you know Research Development costs production costs etc and make that money back requires a fairly large and substantial number of orders. One of the worlds first dedicated Virtual Reality arts spaces as opened in london a new wave of artists have begun experimenting with a technology thats set to revolutionize the ways that art is produced viewed and even sold her has more now from the gallery in central london. Its a gallery space like no other bare walls no sculptures campuses all photographs just several headsets and a dark spawns lined room for centuries new technologies helped to evolve this is the next level im floating in a colossal bright sprays it feels like im in miniature there are giants around me theres a huge garden ive now floated into a huge room and what looks like the artist is sitting all or more down below me it all sounds very alice in wonderland why quite simply because it is. The works by american artist rachel ross in the first of several immersive displays all show in this dedicated Virtual Reality space this isnt just simply about representing the real world in the virtual its also experiencing the artists mind frame an emotional state at the time of creation long before the tech was sort of commercially available people were experimenting with developing kits to make games. Turning to it as a sort of new medium to explore and as with anything thats kind of stages its really interesting to see what the scope of it might be several renowned artists are now experimenting with the medium among them celebrated british artist callie sure this work threshold is a portal to the past view is a transported back to the eighteenth thirtys and an exhibition of early photography Virtual Realities redefining the traditional gallery and reshaping the artists studio this is where color shore works serve a computer screen and headset of the tools of the virtual artist theres a lot of all works out there that all or long bronze sculpture marble sculptures of and i think its quite important to all work should be dealing in these mediums that are all cutting edge off stuff that were basically assimilating images and videos and pictures representations of the world so its important to do with the medium the technology is developing fast so i can see it was a mouse that. Plan has around. Market is now establishing ways to buy and sell work securely in the near future it may even be possible to download a virtual home there are seemingly infinite worlds yet to explore leave barca aljazeera london. Well the practical use of Virtual Reality has a very short history but things are already taking off the first widely available Virtual Reality headset were launched commercially just in two thousand and sixty the total number of Virtual Reality users worldwide is expected to top one hundred and seventy million this year the size of the Virtual Reality market is expected to hit forty billion dollars by twenty twenty almost ninety percent of all Virtual Reality headset its on now Smartphone Base well enough read is the chief Technology Correspondent for x. L. She joins us live from washington d. C. Thanks so much for joining us here on aljazeera i mean when you look at those the stats that by twenty twenty the market will be worth forty billion i guess you know for sure reality has been the next big thing for a while now but it really is set to escalating in the next few years how do you think we will use it mainly i think Virtual Reality is at its best when its taking us to a place we cant go whether that is a physical place in the real world that we want to visit but might not be able to you know somebody who has limited mobility being able to go to rain forest and coastal rica or whether thats a digital place that doesnt exist in reality i think thats when the technology is at its best right now but its still not there its still not compelling enough that most people are willing to put up with the downsides which is strapping on a boat the headset dealing with being actually isolated from the people in their real world so what do you think that the Virtual Reality market would have to do to sort of you know get over those stumbling blocks i mean already most of them are linked to smartphones which i guess is one way of making it more accessible what else do you think. So obviously using smart phones lowers the cost dramatically it does make it a little less capable so i think what you really want is the best of both worlds you want something that is affordable but also offers really good quality and i think thats a little bit lacking today you know theres still especially the Smartphone Based systems you know there are some issues with comfort and where that dedicated systems can do better but then theyre much more expensive so i think ideally you want a little of both i think theres also not the compelling content yet and this is a real chicken and egg type problem we saw a lot of content developed over the last two years only to find that the market for Virtual Reality isnt quite big enough so what we need is a little bit of that chicken and egg to go from a negative problem to a flywheel where theres good content which is drawing in more users which is bringing more content and i think thats going to take one really compelling use so something that makes me really want to put on a headset and whether that a concert experience thats really good or maybe telecommunications so that a grandmother and a grandkid that are physically on opposite parts of the globe really feel next to one another that could be a compelling use but i think we really need one must use killer app if you will to drive some adoption before we really start to see that positive flywheel yeah i mean all the examples that you made you know sound that mazing but i suppose i got to ask the question because whenever there is new technology theres always some people you know urging for caution what dangers are downsides you could think that there might be with this kind of technology. Theres a couple i mean in the near term you know you have some comfort and sort of Health Issues in terms of you know if you dont have the distance between the eyes just right you know you can have knowledge or some problems that hasnt proven to be a big problem but again its because most people arent wearing these very long i think long term people talk about the problems that could exist if Virtual Reality is so compelling that people are using it to escape the real world again right now the problem is the content isnt compelling enough so weve got a ways to go before the content is so compelling that people dont want to leave but certainly were imagining that both in Research Science fiction the movies things like reading player one where in a world thats increasingly difficult it becomes truly tempting you know solves all our problems you know escaping the real world could be a little too attractive. I guess well have to see in a free that chief Technology Correspondent for access thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us thank you thanks barbara. And so here are. Two days to go. Business updates. Business updates. The Sundance Film Festival is one of the hottest and most important stops on the film calendar from showcasing the latest in indie cinema the highlighting the films which will be big at the oscars cinema goers will be hotly anticipated in the selections this year for more lets go to rob reynolds who joins us live now from park city so give us some of the anticipations you know what the hot films are going to be. Well theres a lot of films here that are that are getting a lot of attention course the film festivals just opening now so no ones really been able to screen any of them barbara but really that the things that are different this year are there are very little snow on the ground and the impact of the Harvey Weinstein scandal has been so immense here its really what everyone is talking about talking about the role of women in the Entertainment Industry broadly in independent film or specifically and what the me too movement has has done over the course of the past several months and joining me here to talk a little bit more about this is pamela paul come on in here and pam as a writer and film critic for several publications what do you how do you assess the mood here in sundance gets under way with regard to the whole Sexual Misconduct affairs obviously came out right away that was one of the first topics that they discussed at the conference i think that its something that as mr cooper pointed out were over and done with the Harvey Weinstein lets be done with that lets move on and make progress in the right direction giving women an opportunity to have a voice Robert Redford said man lets just sit back and well listen and maybe well make a nice difference that way and speaking of making a difference already we are seeing theres a theres a significant number of womens of women filmmakers at this years festival is that right thats right in fact its increased every year at sundance would be nice to see that the mainstream population as well that at least one thing that at sundance and other festivals across the country in the world last year there were about one third were female filmmakers the directors writers that have this year we have about thirty eight percent nice increase we have a little ways to go if kerry had stated in the press conference but we are making some progress so women are sitting in the directors chairs women are actually writing the screenplays and having their voices heard we represent women represent fifty point two or for. Point eight percent of the population yet our stories arent out there we need to get more of that out there and sundance is one way to give that opportunity to us and what are some of the films that youre looking forward to seeing this year well the tale is one of them actually a very timely tale if you will about sexual abuse and i believe that laura dern stearnss stars in this movie we also have deborah grabbed neck i believe is her last name and she is responsible for giving us winters bone Jennifer Lawrence the star and see dow has leave no trace no trace right ben foster is in that film too the films that are definitely on my list of films to say were going to have to leave it there pamela thank you very much for speaking with us so we will keep track of how things go here in park city for now back to you barbara and rob reynolds thanks so much rob reynolds in park city thank. Thats something all the sports news here is andy thank you so much barbara well six time champion of a joke of it said conditions were right on the limits of safety on what was a scorching day at the Australian Open with temperatures hitting forty degrees in melbourne djokovic who is just one client failing the hates johnny geyser oscar reports play is safety in the brutal heat at Melbourne Park has been something of a regular discussion over the years and with temperatures topping forty degrees celsius on thursday it was no surprise to hear them question whether the player should have been suspended. The said he felt like he was dying on court and suffered dizziness and his match with Novak Djokovic both east needed to doctor in the second set and he continued to battle but eventually lost in the last six to djokovic i knew you kind of work and train hard to be able to sustain this kind of conditions and be tough but i think there is there is there is a limit and it is a level of i guess tolerance between being being fit and being. I think in danger in terms of health. Defending champion Roger Federer had easy a condition to his night match against german opponent again struck despite being taken to a tie breaking third set federer prevailed to reach the third round to play rashad guess case he had to get organizers to give him another night match well those maybe sixty guys are asking for stuff so im one of those guys yes do you think you have more leverage than some. Possibly but i its not my call its their call when its top seed simona halep was also spared the worst of the conditions and was able to cruise into the third round with a six two six two win over canadas using the shot earlier in the day the former world number one maria sharpe appeared to be in a hurry to get through her match with anastasio the best about she won the first set in just twenty three minutes and dominated the tie break in the second to win. But wimbledon champion got to be good also will play no further part at this tournament after being given her marching orders in a straight sets loss to taiwans shays to weigh the world number eighty eight dumping out the third seed and turning up the heat in the race for the womens title i joined as roster aljazeera. All sixty years ago today a young hockey player called willie a remade n. H. L. History he became the leagues first black pirate pairing for the Boston Bruins in a win over the Montreal Canadiens six decades on a reef back on the ice here in boston for remember that night in nineteen fifty eight the canadiens spent a total of twenty one years in pro hockey and now works as a diversity ambassador for the n. H. L. The spite in a chair history of the league still faces criticism for its inability to spread the word that hockey is for everyone the ice is still. Overwhelmingly whites when it comes to top level play is research in twenty fifteen found that just the sense of n. H. L. Stars all black compare that to the n. B. A. Where players make up more than three quarters of the league in a fell not far behind them another study in the u. S. Last year found that ninety two percent of the n. H. L. Fun base is white the n. B. A. The only big north American League with a majority of African American fans well earlier on we spoke to the u. S. Full trust are in gold and he says its becoming a commercial as well as a social imperative for the game its a pale now that the league is getting less popular among their core group of white males its more imperative than ever and its not just about diversity within the u. S. Its also about diversity around the world look at where hockey is popular elsewhere in the world and its also white majority countries like in Northern Europe and in russia so i think there are a lot of reasons why they have to look to expand their fan base beyond white majority populations not just in the u. S. I think p. K. Subban is an excellent example of a black canadian player who is hes a role model he in every way embodies what you want a sports star to be but the league hasnt put very much energy into promoting him instead they stick with promoting the same type of you know young white canadian faces that weve always seen the league kind of lean on like the Sidney Crosbys and even the patrick kane if youre going to american players so i do think its very fair to say the league should be doing more to promote the minority players who have come up and are stars in the league really mockery made a stronger its an suv competitive go five to three months out with a rib injury my career shooting a bogey free round of sixty nine on day one of the championship. He is three shots behind and defending champion Tommy Fleetwood the fourth time major winner has slipped to eleventh in the World Rankings i. Sort of knew what i was expecting out there but at the same time you never really know. Your first competitive draw and then over a hundred days so its a little bit different but i did well i i i stayed patient i gave myself loads of chances and i started the day with eleven strip bar so i was trying to stay as patient as possible so it was nice to. Bury three of the last seven there and get in and under seventy with two stages left of this years duck already cost science is closing in on victory the spaniards lead was cut down to forty four minutes after i made a bit of a mistake on the route to san juan in argentina but thats still a big advantage of a second place stuff and thats a handful so its nice to see it when some so when his stage all theists race ok that is the sport lets get back to save offer in london andy thank you very much and that is it for they say news hour do stay with us though going to be back in just a few minutes with more of the things whose support watch.
