Hello im Maryam Namazie this is the news hour live from london coming up in the next sixty minutes. In favor one hundred twenty eight against nine. U. N. Members defy u. S. Threats and vote by a huge majority against its recognition of jerusalem as israels capital. Vote counting in catalonia with early results suggest in pro secession parties could be set to hold on to their majority in parliament. The u. S. Imposes sanctions on those accused of Human Rights Violations against the ranger and others and peruse president defends himself as he faces impeachment proceedings in congress. And im Peter Simmons in doha with all the days sports news saudi arabia and the United Arab Emirates walk out of a News Conference on the eve of the gulf coast protesting the presence of qatari media. Below our top story the United NationsGeneral Assembly has voted by a huge majority to declare u. S. Recognition of jerusalem as israels capital novel and void all in all one hundred twenty eight members voted for the resolution with just nine against and thirty five abstentions countries who sided with america israel guatemala honduras Marshall Islands micronesia narrow palauan togo uncompromising speeches were made on both sides a spokesman for the palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas condemned washingtons decision and called the resolution a victory for palestine but israels Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu has called the vote for posterous that u. S. President trump his stance on jerusalem. Israel completely reverse posterous was allusion to swim as our capital always was always will be but i do appreciate the fact that a growing number of countries refused to participate in this theater of the absurd so i appreciate that and especially i want to again express our thanks to President Trump the numbers are only for their store difference of israel and theres a difference of the truth its a day of shame to those who stood shoulder to shoulder with occupation settlements against International Law and i do appreciate very much that the majority of the International Community decided in spite of the threats and intimidation of their state to stand tall and to stand shoulder to shoulder with was them farsightedness International Law and the rule of law another rule of the jungle well u. S. Ambassador to the u. N. Had warned she would be taking the names of states which voted against washington stance mike hanna brings us more now from the United Nations in new york intitled the two thirds majority is comfortably reach this vote to a sweeping repudiation of President Trumps unilateral action in recognizing jerusalem as the capital of israel the result heralded by the apparent isolation of the u. S. Delegation in the chamber and the enthusiastic welcome given to the palestinians. Whose foreign minister addressed the assembly and insisted that jerusalem would be the capital of a palestinian state national yom we need today not because of any animosity towards us but because of its decision which constitutes an aggression on the genuine a natural rights of the Palestinian People to the city of jerusalem. The israeli ambassador holding up a two thousand year old coin as evidence of israels claim to the city. It proves the ancient connection of jewel to jerusalem and togo one dearest said what a mahler join the six nations that had voted against a similar resolution affirming jerusalem status last month and the number of abstentions increased from nine to thirty five the special ops the result of the threats made by the us to retaliate financially against those who voted in favor this is bullying and this jumble will not bow to the uk it is unethical who think that this works and dignity off Member States are for sale let me put it in these three we will not be intimidated you can be strong but if this doesnt make you right dismissive us reaction during the Turkish Foreign minister speech and the ambassador once again adopted a threatening tone in her response to the United States will remember the stay in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation we will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the Worlds Largest contribution to the United Nations whats there are questions now about the future of u. S. Led attempts to renew negotiations particularly as the palestinian leadership insists it will not talk to u. S. Representatives in the light of President Trumps decision the u. S. Ambassador claimed the faute could determine the way in which u. S. Citizens view the United Nations in reality though the result reflects a global condemnation of President Trump his strategy and his policies mike hanna out jazeera United Nations. In a ram move trump refused to comment on the vote and ignored reporter questions that he made as he made his way to a Veterans Hospital in maryland. A medical right old. Military Medical Center say older shovel ready to let the world youre right it will be coming back right after that it will be over there for a while but. Were just going to wish the every. Year we love the thank you were. Live now to mike hanna who joins us from u. N. Headquarters in new york and so mike its been a few hours since the vote actually took place what are you hearing there about the message the International Community sent today when it comes to the matter of jerusalem. Well it was more than two thirds majority within the General Assembly that was needed to pass a resolution and certainly those who voted in favor of the resolution were of course reaffirming the status of jerusalem but no doubt whatsoever they were also sending a very strong message to President Trump and his decision of course to recognize jerusalem as israels capital but also a degree of anger a great degree of anger that was never publicly expressed privately delegates were deeply concerned at the tactics that the u. S. Used in this particular vote and privately as well they were saying there was great great anger at that particular tactic that decision that was reflected i think in the vote in the sweeping vote against the resolution in favor of the revolution and in fact against president transfer his policies and especially his tactics marry him indeed and that seems to be perhaps the most significant thing to even emerge from this its not just the u. S. Position ed of the vote which of course was no surprise but it was the way in which the u. S. Tried to intervene and influence on their Member States. Yes that was the not forgetting israels part in all of this is world the briefing notes that israel sent out to Diplomatic Missions around the world to persuade Member States to vote against this resolution are very similar to the arguments that were violence by the United States clearly there was some kind of coordination you also had a fairly unprecedented move of the israeli delegation placing on follow some delegates seats containing that coin that was brandished during the meeting a two thousand year old call in which the israeli ambassador insisted to proved israels claim to jerusalem tactics like this are very unusual within the diplomatic confines of the United Nations and this has led to something of an aftermath that were going to be seeing in the days and weeks ahead as i mentioned there the idea of the u. S. Being an honest broker in any negotiations that might occur thats very unlikely at present given the depth of feeling by the palestinians at the u. S. Decision to recognize drew slim but also at the manner in which it is hc to and bullied and continue to threaten u. N. Member states this likely to be some rollback as well from some of the Member States at the tactics that the u. S. Has employed and theres been diplomatic silence from traditional allies such as britain and france but with there is great disquiet a staff of those particular missions here as well given what theyve seen in recent days and given what the u. S. Has attempted to do to a democratic voting process within the General Assembly my canner at United Nations. Well israel had lobby countries to either vote against the resolution or abstain from voting is a hearing that harry force that has more on this now from west jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister had preemptively rejected this resolution and he didnt waste much time in rejecting it after the vote had gone through as well saying that israel did reject this what he called proposed resolution coming from the United Nations really the israeli tactic throughout this has been to downplay the importance of this so that it carries no weight in terms of israels claim on jerusalem which he says as did his u. N. Ambassador goes back thousands of years israel was the jewish capital is now and always be he said the israeli ambassador to United Nations also accused the palestinians of being background manipulators of countries that didnt realize they are being manipulated into voting for this resolution at the start tick of trying to downplay the significance of this and say that it really didnt mean very much was there on one hand on the other hand is really also been making great effort to try to lobby nations to if not vote against the resolution at least abstain however countries such as the United Kingdom france large powerful International Players very closely allied you in normal circumstances with the United States and indeed friendly towards israel voting for this resolution so in those circumstances this argument that the Israeli Government is trying to make maybe a little bit harder to win favor joining me now is Richard Ponzi director of just security twenty twentieths timson center he joins us now from washington d. C. Thanks very much for taking the time to speak to us of course the scale of the opposition to transverse the move is important here but how crucial is it that many of the countries that voted in favor of this resolution were traditional u. S. Allies like the u. S. U. K. And france. Yes the outcome of the vote was not a surprise it has to be disappointing precisely for the point youve made that traditional allies many of our top nato european allies voted in favor of the resolution the u. K. And france they were very careful though to say that this is a issue of supporting longstanding policy in the middle east of the western alliance resolutions since the late one nine hundred sixty s. Many of which the United States has been an author and certainly a backer through the u. N. Security council in fact in one nine hundred eighty there was a resolution that specifically stated that no country should establish a diplomatic presence in jerusalem this is something that the United States has supported both republican and democratic administrations for decades so they have reasons to be concerned this is not boding well for the middle east Peace Process and its yet another indication of the u. S. Losing clout on critical middle eastern issues. So what is the main fallout from the vote today in just this situation overall when you take into consideration that this resolution is nonbinding and the fact that on the ground nothing changes the palestinians who have been living under Israeli Occupation for decades. The main fallout is one of us lit relinquishing leadership yet again on a critical issue President Trump has come out from the day one of his administration appointing his son in law and a Senior Leadership role on the middle east Peace Process stating its importance as it has been a longstanding commitment of many administrations over the past several decades and yet now were no longer seen as a neutral arbiter of the country the United States is not seen as able to provide good offices in this case and its extraordinary because this is a very important week where we unveiled a National Security strategy stating how important it is to advance our interests and values through multilateral bodies such as the United Nations and in todays vote were clearly losing support from many of our traditional allies not just in europe but throughout the middle east and of course the palestinians have stated quite unequivocally that they would not see the United States as a neutral arbiter in this important issue on middle east peace and of course it is very difficult to see. From a rational perspective how any deal the ultimate deal is struck but it can possibly be struck off to such a significant declaration as the one on jerusalem was made by the trump of ministration. So what happens next then does this make it easier for the palestinians to at least get more International Involvement and engagement in the conflict in any potential process and to sideline the u. S. Role. Regrettably there is more division and paralysis on the middle east process than weve seen in years it was of course up and down in previous administrations but we havent seen any progress over the last twelve months in the situation as seen an enormous setback this is one of the pillars of the middle east Peace Process and there was not to be a foregone conclusion on the status of jerusalem until all parties agreed the process is driven through the quartet alongside the United States that would be the United Nations the European Union and russia its hard to see there to be unity some suddenly even among these four pillars of the Peace Process supporting israel and palestine but back to my earlier point this is just another demonstration of the u. S. Not working not only with its traditional allies but working through multilateral bodies where in this National Security strategy it states it wants to have leverage viz a viz its adversaries in advancing its interests this is yet one more demonstration of relinquishing a area of critical leadership in the world one where just a few weeks ago the palestinians middle eastern allies they would not have wished for this action to have taken and thereby undermining the Important Role that the u. S. Can play in bringing the sides together to talk through these very sensitive and longstanding differences between the israelis and the palestinians to the point that to one of a number of confusing contradictions that have emerged over the past year now thank you very much for a chimpanzee a director of just security twenty twenty joining us from washington d. C. Well theres much more to tell you about in this hour symbiote ways need to calls on nationals to return home and help we build the country as he visits south africa to push his economic reform agenda. At least four people die after a ferry with hundreds of people aboard capsizes in the philippines. And its fifty days to go until the Winter Olympics people tell us how come changs preparations accounting for. Now we move to catalonia partial results a pro secession partys might win an absolute majority in Regional Election more than fifty percent of the votes have now been counted an early exit poll suggested prounion his policies would fall short of the sixty eight seats needed for a majority in the Catalan Parliament if confirmed it means that spains was political crisis in forty years is set to continue. Will be prounion a Citizens Party is hoping to win a large number of seeds in. Catalonia to remain part of spain and says shes campaigned on behalf of all catalans. Meanwhile the republican left of catalonia looks set to be the most successful of all the separatist groups. Montero various parties expected to get more votes in the organization of exile former leader carlos pitched amount. For brennan joins us live from the headquarters of the Citizens Party in barcelona first so lets speak to col pan hall is with the supporters of the secessionists e. R. C. Party and i imagine the mood is somewhat oil. Right now the mood is very much mood muted and that is because people are still watching these results come in with around thirty five percent of the vote still to be counted people here know very much that this is going to go down to the wire right now what seems to be emerging is that the procession bloc could bring new its majority in the capital and parliament but to break that down i want to bring in Political Science professor sonia and dolls from Barcelona University so sonia if this trend continues it is going right now what does this mean edmunds the spanish the bread from mr murray and of the whole has not been successful i would say both clocks seem to have remained although their skin cancer inside the blogs from the smaller parties to the larger ones this is just approved this election was very polarized and that means that we do have a very fractured society that is just a reflect of how fractured right now the cuttle in society is now if the trend is maintained it could be that the program unionist Citizens Party becomes the Biggest Single Party but the process session bloc is the majority bloc is that going to have any impact that a pro Unionist Party is the Biggest Single Party you have definitely dialed is going to give something very new in catalonia to be the first time in history in the turn in parliament and i think probably the mothers who is the leader of the Citizens Party will try to make the best out of that of being the most voted party that said it looks very improbable that she would be able to. Form of government with the tentative results were seeing now so we just have to wait a bit longer im afraid now as you mentioned earlier theres been a big personal by spanish Prime MinisterMariano Rajoy he was the one who stepped in imposed direct route catalonia he was the one who dissolved the parliament and called new elections if this backfires on him if the independent spoke is reelected to the capital and parliament what is going to happen at the national level. It is the fickle to say because many things that weve been predicting and finally happened in spain i would say that at least a Spanish Society would have to react and really claim some indication or some accountability to mr hoyer and the government by saying you bet for this telling everyone this would be the solution to the conflict and clearly was not because the seems to be still a big majority of catalans who want to decide on their future and to one that future to be independent from spain and that means the government has failed and probably the whole democratic spanish system how fate so expecting to see some reaction also in the Spanish Society thank you very much sonia. There if this trend does continue it is going now the process session bloc could renew its majority in the Catholic Parliament and that almost certainly means that the capsule on political crisis and spains worst political crisis since the end of dictatorship more than forty years ago is very much set to rumble on mario thank you very much col payne hall there in barcelona well also in the city paul brennan whos at the headquarters of the pro union a Citizens Party and so a call was describing there a sense of cautiousness on the part of secession supporters the results are looking good but it could still go down to the wire whats the mood where you are. On the mood here is very happy i mean to come up stairs because downstairs where the press are all gathered it is extremely clammy and close the large crowd of media gathered in the basement press room and its also difficult to get a signal out from there so although it looks quite quiet behind me believe me the party this year that honest party the Citizens Party are very happy with the results as they are emerging i mean the latest figures ive got a sixty five point five percent of the votes have been counted now and see that there are no says thirty five seats just pick up the lawn you know thats a. Party we have thirty for the r c thirty two and see u. P. A. Four now bear in mind the system here is proportional representation so as the percentage of votes counted rises the proportion of the seats allocated to each party can shift it can go down as well as these are not actually set in stone yet but bear in mind see other than us in twenty fifteen only had twenty five seats as i consult my notes so to get anywhere close to thirty three thirty four perhaps thirty five is a resoundingly vindication of their efforts in the past weeks and months since the october first referendum that took place and they will see it as a victory despite the fact that they will be unable its highly unlikely that they will be able to do a deal theres nobody that would deal with them in order to go into government but despite that they would see that their performances at least held up the pro unity end of the bargain in the democratic process here. Right so then whats next for the the prey unionists. Youre saying that they would see that scenario as an advantage to them but how do they then respond if the secessionists have a majority. What is in doubt that they will respect the results i mean thats been the overwhelming sentiment of all the parties here that the democratic process has to be respect to the will of the people has to be respected and with a high turnout in excess of eighty one percent now thats not just a record for counted on your its a written record for the whole of spain that kind of turnout means that the results really can be relied upon as a accurate reflection of public sentiment here as far as the wishes over the people will be you see that analyst party will say that their job in opposition despite being the Biggest Party will be to represent electress the pro se voters and they will do that to the best of their ability thank you very much paul brennan joining us there with the latest from boston or of course well continue to keep an eye on those early poll results as they come in to us and im moving on in the u. S. Has imposed sanctions against dozens of people and businesses accused of Human Rights Violations and corruption freezing their assets in the u. S. One of those targeted is an army general in myanmar accused of leading a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the revenger the u. S. Is also drafted a u. N. Resolution banning nearly ninety percent of Petroleum Exports to north korea can really help it has this update for us what this is essentially is that the first use of the Trump Administration of whats known as the global magnitsky act that was first expanded under barack obama you know what this does as you point out as it freezes the assets blocks access to the Global Financial system for a number of individuals including i mean marginal accused of ethnic cleansing and of course this is a follow up to a very strong statement from the u. S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson saying that in fact the actions against the will hinge and rockline state amounted in the eyes of the United States to ethnic cleansing so certainly this is an example of these sanctions that have been announced of the United States using as it has said repeatedly all of its tools that its. Disposal to promote human rights and adding to that also to this request by the trumpet ministration to the United Nations with regard to north korea feeling that the saying that were put in place there in september were violated with regard to Petroleum Exports now asking for in light of the view of the United States those sanctions being violated for further and tougher action and watching the news hour live from london still to come tell you about the former korean adVice President choose not rage tantrum delayed a flight will avoid more jail time nine hundred people injured after an s.
