Spreading among the hinge of refugees living coxs bazar in bangladesh the World Health Organization says hundreds of suspected cases including six deaths have been recorded since december the six six hundred forty six thousand range you have fled since military crackdown in rec heightened state of those headlines the stream is coming right up. The difference. In the similarities of cultures of. Aljazeera. Ok and your industry today should u. S. President donald trump be actively resisted i guess today has been a vocal part of that live meant for more than a year now you may not know his name but its likely that you know its today meet Michael Skolnik and imo they could be loud and ill be bringing the questions from our community to my god keep them coming with hash tag a. J. Stream and you can also send them to me via you tube. When us President Donald Trump was on the Campaign Trial he promised his make America Great again slogan was more than just words it was a movement that would sweep him into the white house but his election also birthed another movement one of resistance to him and all that his presidency stands for on the streets and on one of the loudest voices of that resistance has been Michael Skolnik and there hasnt been much that he hasnt commented on his busy twitter feed is filled with support for black lives matter women and the womens march on immigrants and thats just in the past few months theres also been extensive commentary on trump his government and his actions skolnick activism has been noticed by trump himself he was blocked by the u. S. President in september Michael Skolnik c. E. O. And cofounder of the says agency joins us now from new york and joining their questions about the meaning of the last us is a doctor a recipient and Communications Director for the engraved on campus org. As a nation and jimmy adams is a digital organizer michael for some of its national hits he might not be that familiar if you will you know what thats a story i would love for you to tally a young staff it involves hailing a taxi in new york a story from it kind of shows how you can. Motivate. Can you tell the taxi story. Yeah well im looking at those tweets like the greatest hits of of of high amount of anger and frustration with trump so thank you for a lot i didnt look at seventy one of those moments when i was a teenager and living in the york growing up i had a moment of awakening if you will was with a friend of mine who was an older teen ager late one night after a party coming out of central park and this is in the mid ninetys looking for a taxi cab to go home and ill never forget omar green you know putting his hand out to get a taxi i was fourteen years old almost nineteen and watching taxi as a taxi a taxi going by finally a taxi you know i stopped and i put my hand out to help my friend and the taxi stopped for omar and omar so you got in a cab and you know in great disgust having gone through that im sure hundreds of times in his lifetime for the first time for me as a fourteen year old seeing firsthand the difference of treatment between two friends of a different skin color i walked home that night at fourteen years old not knowing what the words meant or not knowing what White Privilege or antiracism any of these things that have become part of my life my lifes work but to me knowing that that that i had something that he didnt have now is treated differently because of that that was a moment of awakening for me to a very young age and and ever since twenty five years later im a im a older man now. Doing the work what do you tell people that you do michael and people like michael what do you do what do you tell them. I would have you know i have a great privilege of working in a company and im one of the cofounders of the agency thats the Creative Agency doing social impact campaigns its all workers on cooperative about giving the company away to the workers of the course of eight years and i have the great pleasure of creating campaigns and working with incredible you know people around this country around the world to try to deliver compassion and try to uplift authenticity and create. So you mentioned you tweet a lot im going to dip right into there and one of the things youve tweeted about not too long ago this is just ember eighth and this is a troubling story for many people in our community and those watching morning a graphic he tweeted this is a murder and what youre referring to is this incident this is from the New York Times this headline video shows Daniel Shaver who was a white man pleading for his life before being shot by officer this happened in two thousand and sixteen and the dash body video was recently released heres what people online are saying about it oh to men says for those who dont know black lives matter is fighting for Daniel Shafer an unarmed white man killed by a white cop another person goes on to say over and over i see black cloaks who advocate black lives matter being just as vocal when white folks like Daniel Shaver are killed by police its white people whose advocacy less often crosses racial lines hence the hostile act so some heated and pointed comments there michael but what do you make of that what do you make of White Privilege and what it has to do with things like black lives matter which youre pretty vocal about. Yeah a proud supporter of black lives Matter Movement as an ally as a white person. In the great disparities of Police Violence against communities of color versus White Communities but sir in this case we saw a horrible abuse of power by a Police Officer and killing a white man in this really really horrible video and here you are playing you know shaun king who is one of the great leaders of black eyes Matter Movement was to want to really sort of three hundred seventeen thousand read tweets was want to address this video to light to many people but certainly we see police abuse happening all across this country we know what happens way more in black communities when it happens anybody we should call the injustice what it is this is murder in my opinion it is it is ugly it is nasty i feel terrible for this family and certainly want to make sure we uplift the life of being shaver because he did not deserve to die at the hands of the police i want to show our audience some of you what some of the what the two either the amplification all maybe getting very big names to come over to your idea of what social justice is and use some of that celebrity to see that heres a look one james and carry in the next place where i come before the cascade i cant believe you may remember is one of the last things that are gonna set before he was strangled and then we have here i am an immigrant share your story as one campaign that you are actually amplifying to me as a digital organizer what is it that you want to ask michael. Sure so i know michel that you said that we need everyone in this movement we need tweeters we need funders we need protesters talk about what folks you think need to do in this age of trump in this age of resistance to continue to be in a Good Conflict to continue to be a good sister against this whole entire. Grievance. You know we were jimmy a thank you and. So appreciate your work as well so thank you for joining us. You know i weirdly have known donald trump on and off for many many years because of my previous relationship and the business that i ran with Russell Simmons and donald and russell were friends and donald actually wrote the forward to russells first two books many many years ago and so i got a chance to be around donald over the years and and this man is as vicious as nasty as a sexist massaging is to grace a comma phobic behind the scenes as he is and as a u. S. President and so what i see happening during this time is that donald in his own you know National Security adviser h. R. Mcmaster not the one whos been indicted but the new one in his own language called him in the eyes of the in the intelligence of a kindergartener his own secretary of state i said hes an f. Ing idiot this man is an intelligence level and understanding of the issues is very very poor but what he does know is he does know how to build a brand and doesnt know how to start and fight a culture war and that is what donald trump is doing when he attacks Football Players only attacks the media here attacks jamelle hill wing attacks but a rico wilson there is no a coincidence that he consistently attacks black people as he attacked them again no question why not eminem as white but he will happily attack on and capture nic so as as folks who are part of the resistance as folks will culture makers who artists who have platforms we have to consistently push back from a cultural level not just from a policy level of from a cultural level theres also the me too movement as an example is a incredibly Inspiring Movement led by culture led by women who said enough is enough inspired by the womens march to see a man show vicious and so nasty against women to say if we cant be true in the polls were going to speak out loudly about Sexual Assault and harassment and you to donald trump have been accused by nineteen women of Sexual Assault and harassment and we will make sure the world knows that. Let me just let me just say this again michel you tweeted this out a little while ago thirteen women have accused trump a Sexual Harassment i guess i would just give me a moment and then you list them at the f. A. A. And you say i believe them or rather than just the tough criticism you have of President Trump you actually have had one on one experiences with him tell us the one thats the most revealing for you well you know Russell Simmons and i want to go see him in two thousand and twelve when he was ramping up his birth or movement in this race is campaign against president obama and we sat in his office in two thousand and twelve with the mom from that time the ninety six st mosque here in new york city and a rabbi march ninth to my very prominent temple synagogue. Was the man from the mosque and we begged him to stop with the birth or stuff and nonsense and the racism and he said to us you know that he really believed that obama was a muslim from kenya and that he should be the president and we are commanded out of that this is you should not say these things and he said no i really believe this and so in his mind you know donald trump you know really believe this you know for many of us regardless of the game we have so sure aids but i saw it many times with my own ears in my own eyes the racist comments the sexist comments the antisemitic comments this man is vicious hes nasty and hes dangerous. I think theres something that is. Why when i think thats the sound of people listening take out. Yes i think that it will were talking about systemic oppression and larger and that are interlock with one another and i think that when you when you talk about me too as an example its not just led by women its led by survivors and i think that thats very important ive had times where Sexual Harassment and violence are. Are being denounced at every corner and we know this is not new rick coulter has been. The place for a very long time and the fight against racism is one that requires a critical understanding of gender and so i think it is because transgender woman of color being murdered in alarming numbers and thanks to the courage of survivors and Survivor Advocacy more people are going now inside the perpetrators of Sexual Violence and so my question to you would be the men and the producer what are your plans and upcoming productions to educate others the gender heterosexual white men underneath for gender justice so they can join the fight to make this country safer for gender and sexual minorities as well as harassment and rate for e. Catalina thank you and i do also want to say i one thing i think that you raised is also the need for those who are directly impacted to be supported to be leaders in the movement you as a doctor recipient certainly as someone who is an ally to the dreamers and to make sure we passed a dream act before the end of this year for december twenty second and knowing that it is critical that you and others who are dr recipients are leading that movement as well we are supporting that in the same way as you mentioned survivors are leading this movement to me too when you speak of gender you know i speak about this a lot as a as a cyst gendered right male that we talking about the transgender that the murders of transgender women you know is the highest weve ever seen this twenty seven murders this year and two thousand and seventeen the highest weve ever seen a record of transgender people women specifically being murdered and we know transgender women of color are you more of a target so i think people have said oh and the translating a coalition i think we like you know i said oh of gender trower i havent traced the set who came out just recently against Jeffrey Tambor or on the side of transparent as one of the actors who is accusing him of sexually as Sexual Assault so i think of that as as its just gender white male we have a tremendous. Reckoning to do amongst ourselves and i hold circle for men often mcgorry who is a good friend who doesnt have a tremendous amount of work on this issue have been i hold circle often for men have a lot of conversations of how we bring men into these conversations because we know that think about this so ive been thinking a lot if one in four women in america have been raped that means and lets say this is just a small percentage of those who that have been raped by serial rapists that means that one for a one in five or one in six for that matter men have committed. Ape and what are we doing about that ive got a four year old son i got a very very important conversation there out with my son as he grows up so its not just about me you know oftentimes we say oh we have daughters therefore we have to have these conversations no i have a son thats why i do this work if youre going to have that a conversation with my so how to respect and treat women at the very or attend because education and preventing the kind of rape culture that is so rampant and its been so grand and for since the beginning of this violent countrys history its important and it started home but many of us the undocumented and the are actually recipients are also woman and members of l. G. B. T. Q. Communities and the transgender woman and they deported i could be facing a death sentence counseling for action for childhood arrivals and current efforts by the trumpet ministration to numbers of people how disproportionate of sex and the ability of any woman to be to cuba well thing denouncing domestic biden and Sexual Harassment and rape for sure you are every now and producer and i want to ask him continue asking how do we break that Glass Ceiling and get boys like mind like sail and many other trans people into media i dont time when its not politically expedient and so what are you going to do to create a Cultural Church in your role as the burying our producer away from rape culture oh well expose the anti immigrant sentiments and policies that in my opinion are also anti servitor because i think that when i dont have the opportunity and the ability to reach out to learn forth men and make my big public the survivor that they are concerning yeah you know i. I appreciate your question and certainly respect your work how do you know and i think that. What ive learned over the course of my lifetime as ive gotten older and you know wake up in the morning and watch cartoons now and sort of watch the news and world sun i realize that the better purpose for me in this world is to amplify and to make sure that the folks who are mostly directly impacted are centered in the work so we talk about you know i was just at a retreat a few weeks ago with bambi and gina and trace talking about these issues and the day after we won home the retreat was a transgender day of remembrance for all those who have been killed and we made sure that folks who were not impacted by these issues were sharing it on social media were talking about it in the news media for going on television or going you know in front of the press so i think its important that we continue to center and uplift especially to a transgender women we know as our eyes that transgender women are a group of people that are right now are really getting it the worst and its important that we uplift those stories so even you being on this program today im humbled. That youre even in the sharing space with you and you having a chance to tell your story so i try to give my time to you and and let you tell more of your story because if i hear from you more this year so michael and kathleen that speaking of scaring time i want to give a little bit of that time track community is watching this live as it happens to show we asked the question what do you think it will take for a wider understanding and acceptance of me to stories similar to what you were asking catalina we got this answer goetia twitter says it will take a dismantling of white male privilege so part of that answer was seen by people who took to the streets in january of this year for the women smart and mia you were pretty vocal about your support for the march and wondering what. You think about persons comment on dismantling white male privilege when it comes to this need to campaign. Yes sure so you know i worked with the organizers of the womens march got the privilege of working on the Communications Committee and was just happy to be a part of history i think that that was a really crucial part of kind of like a redirect of the Womens Movement of this generation of the Womens Movement i think that you know working to dismantle white male privilege is part of the womens march part of all of these different movements and i think thats definitely a piece of this. Really crushing this cultural piece that weve seen with the with the need to move but its not just white male privilege the the need to move across all types demographics and all types of. Classes and races and Political Parties and its really something that we have to crush as a group of moral purveyors who are working to do whats right you know currently have. A candidate in the Alabama Senate race who is a pedophile whos running weve got folks in congress who are doing this so its its crushing white male privilege and its crushing the sins of power and the abuse of power particularly sexual power that have been using in positions of power throughout. The faces of our society to me it just reminds me actually and to my to me also michel of something that you have franco school with and thats Russell Simmons the hip hop impressed impresario and he had a moment hes facing right now where women have come out and said in the past you did this to me you assaulted me you have asked me what is that like to be in that position where you know somebody who is being accused and then what to you to what do you do with that. Yeah its not saddening you know im proud gravitas that feminist im a proud feminist and its its its disappointing its saddening that someone you love and russell someone who i love and a mentor of mine and my former boss and partner. Has been accused of these things and and it hurts right but i think more important than how i feel. Is the women and again centering them and centering all of the women who have come forward courageously including the ones who come forward and accuse russell of Sexual Assault and harassment but the bravery and the courage of these women to tell their stories if the did tweet about and being right male privilege and to catalinas point prior to this that the fact that. Sister gendered men have created a culture where we we have crushed women who have come forward with these kinds of accusations and questioned in question and question them and created a fear and a culture of silence because whenever someone has come fall we say youre lying or not telling the truth to the point as jimi had just mentioned is this race in alabama of learning more versus doug jones the women have to come out with a handwriting expert to prove that doug joe and that the dead were more wrote some odd weird sexual pervasive thing in her High School Yearbook so i am. Proud of the women i believe women i think men i would challenge every man whos watching this to believe the women they are telling the truth the fact some of them waited twenty thirty forty years does not matter and it shows that were doing to them now is part of the reason why they have waited so long to come forth because we we consistently attack them whether its yesterday or forty years ago so im a proud feminist i believe women i am disappointed in those who i love but it does not stop me from making sure that im challenging any man whos listening to sort of let go of their of their chauvinist it by its and believe women when theyre talking about these issues and then i think weve also been sexually assaulted and harassed who have also come for four and bravely and courageously so i want to get one last question from our Community Members and michael this is why should not be who says how many times have you felt like giving up and how do you drive yourself back into the movement well. If i gave well that would be a definition of abusing my white male privilege i dont have the right to give up when i see people like jimmy at the front lines or ketamine at the front lines you know they are the ones who are directly impacted by the things that ive been fighting for for over twenty thirty years of my life so for me to say im going to give up and then i would hope everybody in the movement would question my real intentions of being in the movement i have no choice but to do the work as an ally i wake up every single day and there is no goo to my neck there is no oppression standing at my front door so i walk through life are fairly easily and the empathy and the compassion that is a sad my heart leaves my working to make sure a woman like catalina can live in this country by the country shes only known as her only home her entire life minus johnny as a woman of color can live in this country flee as well from the sensation say thank you so much i think part of the strain today kathleen and to me as thank you for joining us as well i continue the conversation piece and i use the hash tag.
