Welcome to the news grid saudi arabia iran and the struggle for power in the middle east a new chapter in their rivalry is now focused on eleven on where the president has called on saudi arabia to clarify why the lebanese Prime Minister has yet to return to beirut saad hariri suddenly quit his post from riyadh last saturday plunging his country and the region into a new crisis will take a look at the main play is and their powerful eyes also on the grid going in alone eleven countries agreed to move ahead with a Transpacific Partnership trade deal with the United StatesPresident Trump withdrew from the t. P. In january throwing its future in doubt but with a deal now back on track is the u. S. Losing its influence in the region and very still refusing to leave hundreds of Asylum Seekers holed up a b. Minus island prison cound face and. Recently uncertain future as a deadline approaches for them to vacate the recently closed facility have been protests in australia as papa new guinea says it will forcibly remove the man the un is calling for restraint and philippine president rodrigue ode to territory has offered to host an International Human rights summit but Rights Groups say that hes not fit to lead such an event well tell you why i mean to spell connect with us throughout the show using the house its a newspaper. The with. The with the news grid live on air and streaming online for you tube Facebook Live and at aljazeera dot com thank you for joining us its been a day of mounting mystery eleven on in saudi arabia opac promises of peace with syria and more indications that the better battle against isaw is nearing an end three important stories in their own right but theyre also connected and come together to form a new dangerous chapter in the history of a proxy war between saudi arabia and iran we saw it in lebanon its been seven days since the sudden resignation of Prime Minister saad hariri seven days of questions rumors and speculations lebanons president michel aoun is demanding to know why he hasnt yet returned all from saudi Arabia Riyadh is where hariri abruptly announced his resignation from office the u. S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson as issued a warning to regional powers to avoid using levanon as a venue for proxy conflicts are worth reminding you of lebanons complex system of governance that was created after a fifteen year civil war that ended in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine the Lebanese Parliament is divided equally among muslims and christians the most powerful Political Forces include shia and sunni muslims maronite and Greek Orthodox christians and members of the drill space under an earlier pax lebanons president must be a maronite christian the Prime Minister a sunni muslim and the speaker of parliament a shia muslim no external political alliances. A further complication saad hariri and his sunni Political Movement backed by saudi arabia while the shia rivals hezbollah. With iran lets bring in aljazeera is in a hoarder who is in beirut the lebanese capital for us as i mean i saw one week since saad hariri resignation from riyadh a worse a word for us on his fate whats going to happen if he doesnt return to lebanon. Well like you mentioned the president of the country asking saudi arabia to clarify if and when Prime Minister will be returning to levon on the president believes the Prime Minister is detained under house arrest and its not just the president the Prime Ministers own Political Party has suggested implied that they too believe that the Prime Minister does not enjoy the freedom of movement so what is next well according to the constitution the president should hold parliamentary consultations to appoint a new Prime Minister but the president is refusing to do that because hes not accepting resignation he wants to return to eleven on to explain the circumstances behind his resignation and yes levanon is a parliamentary democracy but it is also a consensual democracy the president cannot appoint a Prime Minister who is not a consensual candidate because it will not the result of the instability in the country all sides should agree on the next Prime Minister if the next Prime Minister is seen to be close to iran it will isolate lebanon it will isolate the Sunni Community and what the only politician who politician is ready to take this post it will be political suicide whats at stake for the different political factions in lebanon as we saw a very complicated arrangement bad if managed to come together it seems in a political consensus putting their differences aside how wrong with that last. Well yes a rare consensus there putting their political differences aside but this is a deeply divided country especially concerning hezbollahs army and there is agreement levanon of the. State within a state they want hezbollah to disarm hezbollah is armed wing is Even Stronger than the National Army for example does not this army does not disengage itself from regional conflicts pull its troops from syria if something happens in lebanon if threats against lebanon are carried out then. Supports hezbollah is always trying to portray. Itself is a Lebanese Party but it does not deny its links with iran and it has political opponents here thats hezbollah but what about the from a community the Senate Community today i can tell you they feel marginalized they are upset at saudi arabia we were just in a sunni neighborhood a hariri stronghold a few hours ago and what the people were telling us was that this is unacceptable what saudi arabia has done in lebanon will demand that the Prime Minister is returned we the he is a loss for lebanon hes a loss for us as a community because they see him as their leader in a holder in beirut thank you very much for that dana lets not bring in our social media producer Andrew Chapin under a lot of conversation online about the situation in lebanon and the fate of everyday what are people saying well lets start off with a tweet that posted earlier i think it helps to start the story you can see she post this on her feet earlier today and it shows one of many posters that are springing up across lebanon in support of Prime Minister saad hariri of the hash tag that is above his face says cool numb mock or we are all with you so this is a big topic on lebanese twitter one of the top trending has tags that we were looking at today is if the saudis attacks now many saudis and lebanese are using this particular hash tag to trade insults at one another while anthony here used it to say thank you to saudi arabia for unifying the lebanese people another has had training in lebanon and qatar is people of qatar in solidarity with the people of lebanon as you might expect people here using it to express solidarity with the lebanese people cats are has been under a saudi led blockade since the beginning of june now the lebanese population here is quite small compared to the one in saudi arabia where it exceeds one hundred twenty thousand people now that has to act people of cats are in support and solidarity with the people of lebanon interesting lee is also trending in saudi arabia but we looked into this a bit further and it appears that much of that traffic is being driven by bots in an effort to say that cats are supports hezbollah which of course it does not cream shop is a lebanese journalist and political analyst who told me how concerning the situation is for lebanese expats working in the gulf. Suzies whole situation continues to develop there is definitely a rise in fear and tension between people loved on i mean this is the theres no doubt about it and not a serious honest about a military confrontation its about things like any form of and diplomatic escalations from saudi arabia it could be. You know expelling lebanese nationals or if its out of the you and the g. C. C. It could be even beyond that could be made an economic borrow and i think people fear one of that lot and instability just like before. And that is a big nation white solidarity with heidi. And not just from people who are pro how do you or people who are progovernment which is dominated by hezbollah allies its just part of this whole. The whole serve them situation and they see this as a violation of lebanese and the penance and sovereignty. And as this cartoon by Armand Holmes the shows much of lebanon is waiting for hurry to return or at least to find out more information about his whereabouts so if youre one of those people if youre watching us from lebanon or if youre lebanese living elsewhere in the world do get in touch with us and share your views if youre watching us on Facebook Live go ahead and leave us a comment with your thoughts or better yet tweet me a video message with your thoughts and. Andrew thank you very much for that could we be at a turning point in the six year conflict in syria the u. S. And russian leaders have agreed on a framework to map out an end to the war theyve confirmed their commitment to fight i so and find a political solution to end the fighting donald trump and write him a potent spoke on the sidelines of the apec summit in vietnam trump said he and putin reached the agreement quickly adding that it will save a tremendous number of lies the u. S. State Department Released its version of their joint statement hours after the kremlin and says the president agreed that there is no military solution to the conflict in syria they confirm that the ultimate political solution to the conflicts must be for sure the geneva process now heres how the russian president Vladimir Putin described the decision take a listen. Its a vision that lets you imagine of the sofa its a very crucial document because we see it for some principle things firstly we continue to fight against terrorism in syria its important for the whole International Community that we continue to apply joint if its of the utmost importance that we reaffirm the suffering of syria its territorial integrity that after the fight against terrorism is over well start the political process under the auspices of the United Nations. Now we have two correspondents to explain these latest developments in the syria conflict osama bin job it is in guys on the turkey syria border but first says go to worry china in the russian capital moscow. How big of a diplomatic breakthrough is this you know this agreement from the russian perspective what does this mean well i think from the russian perspective the breakthrough is that they have donald trump essentially swinging rounds even more so than he was doing already the russian view on how syria should should pan out so i mean there is nothing really particularly new in this statements from the kremlin or indeed even from the United States its committing to things which both sides have committed to previously whats notable about it is that its gives asaad credit for his commitments to the geneva Peace Process and also it makes no mention whatsoever of our sides leaving power in syria so those are both things that russia should be i think fairly happy about saying as those are the genders its part of the agenda the they are pushing. But says a say this is not in any way and new thing for russia so its a slightly strange release and made more strange by the fact the kremlin stole a march on the state department releasing it some six hours away or seven hours before the state department go right round to releasing their version of it but what about the fact that theyre talking about the geneva process in a state Department Statement they talk about forging ahead with the geneva process what does that mean for the. Talks on a process that russia initiated. Well the istana process has never really been intended to replace the geneva process i think russia would have liked a standard to take on more of the political aspects the aspects that geneva really is supposed to be dealing with bombs that never really got off the ground so astonished has been focused on dealing with technical cease fire agreements the deescalation zones those sorts of my new shy and geneva is about mapping the broader political framework for a future syrian state now rather me a person in his press Conference Today said that essentially because the battle against i still is in its endgame is what he says you know where we have beaten the terrorists now so we can now have a situation in which we can start moving forward again with geneva that is obviously a process that has had its own. Frailties and difficulties the problem of getting all these. Conflicting and warring and disagreeing policies around the table to agree with with what they want to happen with syria in the future that is as difficult now as it has been in the past thank you very much for that. Life or as in moscow so the russians and the americans say they want to political solution for syria lets just show you a map now of what syria looks like right now what i saw using not sways of territory in the last year the Syrian Government holds areas in red which is roughly half of the country as you can see iraq a militia allied to the Syrian Regime makes gains into eisel territory in the east shown here in black and then u. S. Backed Kurdish Forces are pushing further into eisel territory from the north as shown in yellow as now bring in assam a big job and who is monitoring the situation inside syria from guys on the. Syria border. They talk about a political solution the russians and the americans and the situation on the ground very complicated isnt it you know because the russians and the americans as affording Opposing Sides in in the syrian conflict how are they going to make a political solution work. Well off to the funny that is the Million Dollar question that even the Syrian Opposition is asking saying that on the one hand youve got forces on the ground on the Opposing SideOpposing Sides of the of the war front and then youre talking about an agreement to bring in peace to syria we spoke to a number of opposition figures in the Syrian Opposition who say that theyre not sure how to react to this because they say russia talks peace and does war they say the the history of president Bashar Al Assad who they credit with coming closer to the geneva process and showing intent that he means well for the people of syria has been the opposite of that and hes been deceiving people in the last five years according to the Syrian Opposition this whole notion is like a honeymoon period between the you know americans and the russians which neglects completely the people of syria and their aspirations all this talk of a constitution in syria is is not possible because youve got people of syria who are displaced from their homes and youve got people of syria who are living under the not just the thoughts according to Syrian Opposition and militias of the Assad Government but also foreign Occupying Forces like iran and russia so they say that all of this looks good on paper but it Means Nothing on the ground so you know with isola sama now being defeated in losing territory is there a real big risk today of a clash between the u. S. Backed and russian supported fighters inside syria hosts who are still falling for power and control how high is that risk today. First pretty interesting if you look at that statement they talk about two separate things the deacon fiction zones and deescalation zone decon fiction meaning that there is no more that risk of direct confrontation but in the air or on the ground between russian and american troops but that does not exclude these forces that both of these sides are are supporting the map the two through. Clearly shows that on the eastern and western bank of the Euphrates River i salute is losing ground but the forces that are gaining ground are quite to post from each other that iran and russia about Syrian Government and militias want to take back every single inch of turd free that not just i see but no Syrian Democratic forces the goodish led fighters who are now backed by the United States of taken so this actually puts them on this confrontation and there is there is nothing on the ground which suggests that they will come to a solution but and the Assad Government has been ratcheting things up saying that it considers every single group on its to three which is not syrian does not adhere to its idea of the syrian state as a terrorist group that its going to go after all of them so all of this raises questions that if theory the americans and the russians have agreed that there will be peace to in syria there is a roadmap to peace in syria but we have heard it all before and it keeps cropping up in every single meeting that you see in the last five years where hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and thousands of osama bin jahvid in gaza and tap me the turkey syria border saima thank you very much for that update now weve talked about the political situation in lebanon we have talked about the war in syria lets now expand on this and explore the different players involved in these various conflicts because the middle east has been torn by apollo rising feud between sunni majority rabia and shia dominated iran as a battle for power and influence in the region now when lebanons Prime Minister stepped down from office in riyadh a war of words and between the two regional powers and blames iran and its Lebanese Hezbollah saying its destabilizing lebanon on hezbollah likewise accuses saudi arabia of meddling in the countrys internal affairs and declaring an all out war it doesnt stop there this feud has engulfed countries across the middle east saudi arabia has waged a protracted and devastating war against. Irani iranian back to the rebels in neighboring yemen a proxy war has also played out in this six year syrian conflict as we mentioned iran and hezbollah have backed the regime providing military support and thousands of fighters saudi arabia has backed opposition rebels and this is when we bring in our senior political analyst Marwan Bashara to enlighten us yes im going to play in and break this all down to us because it may seem like theyre different stories but theyre all linked on a lets start with the the u. S. And russia saying today that they have agreed on a political solution for syria nothing new here marwan but the timing is significant isnt it do you think were at a turning point u. S. Wise the syrian conflict is concerned appearance to be seen look from what i detect a person from thence to use words like tremendous say hes going to sift through among the number of lives in syria although already hundreds of thousands of people have died in syria in part because of american neglect of the syrian question didnt take its responsibility as a superpower but be that as it may i think what we are now facing is an attempt by russia and the United States to sound like they are responsible partners on the question of syria. Lets remember that president putin said we are still in a crisis mode with the United States on other issues but on the question of syria as already mentioned the russians are still on the drive and the driver seats of the United States is only trying to follow in the footsteps of russia naming geneva as a place not a stand off as you just raised earlier as a place that at least a bit of a more of a neutral territory but i think russia and iran today are far greater powers with more influence in syria than the United States for the United States to be effective in syria its going to have to step up its game so you have to get involved remember how john kerry and the Obama Administration he got involved days. On no end in syria im not sure secretary or son has that kind of mandate from to the presidency in order to do that all right syria lebanon what is going on with saad hariri there was an interesting question from from one of our producers area today can you talk about what happened. To side harry we and what happened in riyadh exactly a week ago can you call it a cool. Well theres a coup on the part of saudi arabia it seems i mean when we first started talking about this and i was standing right here we said something along the lines that if we take sides how to use word for it hes under threat his life is under threat and hes in saudi arabia to present his resignation to the lebanese people because he thinks hezbollah is overplaying its hand because iran is meddling in lebanon now as days went on it seems that so would your rabia is trying to use its lebanese its influence in lebanon on your side the heavy the who happens to be a citizen as well as a lebanese citizen and Prime Minister in order to what pressure on him to resign because they do want to put pressure on lebanon and on hezbollah and iran so theyre exploiting him is he on that house arrest or is a free man you know i dont think he is this or that i think hes somewhat in limbo like virus of us in the middle east or in limbo meaning i think hes on that are tremendous amount of pressure from the saudis. But hes still not exactly on the house arrest you talked about the saudis overplaying their hand here again it would seem because theres a situation in yemen of course an interesting comment here from one of our us on twitter mohammed who says lebanese leaders have a golden opportunity right now to smartly balance and take positive advantage of saudi any ron interests can may do that ok may overcome their differences or is this saudi raney and rivalry that has been going on for years decades in this region just going to you know keep going look to more works on levanon lebanon did suffer a lot from foreign interventions in lebanon but unfortunately the liberal news or lebanese factions have been the vehicle for a good number of foreign powers to meddle in lebanon i mean hezbollah yesterday said has barely that most of us said iran is not meddling in lebanon and he is the incarnation of iranian meddling in lebanon something for saddam how do you decide how they can say we dont want youre in use the middle lebannon but he is the incarnation of so with the meddling in lebanon now having said that i just want to i dont know if you remember but in one of his latter interviews but isnt obama earlier last year said you know the saudis and the arenas these to share the middle east really do we want the regime in iran and the regime in riyadh to share this region i mean these are not exactly the most graphic regime these arent exactly enlightened regimes and by the way these are not just simply sunnis and shiites majority countries these are regimes that are exploiting sick syrian ism in their country and in the region to advance their own state and National Interests in the region what seems to be happening also marwan and correct me if im wrong is that were seeing shifting alliances you know our eyes that we thought were real our allies are now changing tract it seems israel is in conversation according to various reports. It sounds arabia so are we also here at a turning point where were probably seeing a remapping of you know the different geo political alliances and so on look clearly from the warm of reward and devastation in the middle east over the last several years over the last decade than i have starting with nine eleven the war in iraq on to the comfort of lucians in the arab world from libya to syria yemen and so on so forth yes from the warm water and devastation we are seeing a birth a rebirth of new alliances new forces a new alignment an attempt a remapping the entire region and i think israel what it hopes to be the leader of the sunnis in the arab world i dont think thats going to happen exactly but perhaps there will be complicity between saudi arabia and israel very interesting whats happening indeed thank you very much for your insight as always good to hear from you on this now yemen state airline an update on the situation in yemen which you have talked about the state airline a says it will resume International Flights almost a week after the sandy Led Coalition shut down all movement in out of the country the real kade was in response to a hoofy missile attack but the u. N. And aid agencies are demanding for lifting of the restrictions to avoid a catastrophe in yemen mariana hunt has the latest. Her son is desperate to get out of yemen these pills of whats keeping his wife alive her condition requires treatment in egypt but on monday the airplanes were put on hold when the saudi Led Coalition imposed a complete blockade from the lend ear and see it was in response to a Ballistic Missile fired into saudi arabia by humans who three roubles but not everything is hanging on this treatment it is critical for my wifes life humans National Airline says it will resume International Flights out of a ports in the southern cities of aden and say your own both of which are operated by the saudi Led Coalition but that offers little relief for her son and his wife they live hundreds of kilometers away in the capital sanaa which is part of the sixty percent of territory under the controls they must prepare for a dangerous and difficult journey on a road peppered with checkpoints run by both sides of the conflict. The who the rebels are backed by iran and troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh or the saudi Led Coalition of arab nations joined the war in early two thousand and fifteen launching thousands of the strikes in support of the government the saudi Led Coalition says it shut down humans borders to stem the flow of arms to the who thiis from iran but the United Nations says the blockade has created even greater hardship for millions of yemenis already the poorest country in the region before the war the u. N. Says yemen is now in the grip of the worlds worst humanitarian crisis around seventeen Million People dont have enough to eat every day seven million of them are on the brink of famine more than two and a half years of war has forced almost three Million People from their homes and left yemens infrastructure in ruins and since april more than. Thousand people have died in the worlds worst outbreak of cholera. Hospital staff working in some now say things have never been this bad patients accommodated out on the streets and medical supplies now only trickling in. Our sufferings have doubled the shortage of medicine is getting worse and what aid is given out disappears the misery for people here is just getting worse. The u. N. And aid agencies say nothing but a complete lifting of the blockade will do without it they warn human could be just weeks away from the worlds worst famine in decades medium mahommed aljazeera and theres a very good opinion piece on our website about the situation in yemen. The chairperson of the year many Human Rights Organization watch tonight says its time for the world to stop ignoring yemen she says countries like the u. S. The u. K. France which have stood by their saudi and iraqi allies despite documented of tods on civilians and continue to sell. Bombs have a big responsibility in whats going on in yemen today its a very good piece read it its on our web site al jazeera dot com and if youre watching us on Facebook Live coming up next six million babies later i v f marks its fortieth anniversary and still ahead on the grade eleven percent a grim countries agree on the basis of a free trade deal with the United States well look at what this means for americas influence in the region to say that. The us. Hello there there are a few bits of cloud and rain developing across the middle east at the moment on the satellite picture you can see this area of cloud here is drifting its way across parts of iraq and into iran not a great deal on it at the moment but is it works its way towards the caspian sea it really will become rather more intense so for some of us around the coast of the caspian sea going to be pretty wet there as we head through sunday it will gradually drift its way eastwards on monday but then ease as it does so and instead another system will develop towards the east over kabul looks really quite wet and around in the mountains well see a fair amount of snow as well further south and here in doha the temperatures are really quite nice at the moment thirty two degrees is our maximum during the day but on monday weve got a bit of a change the winds will be picking up will be a very blustery day thirty degrees will just be maximum insular of the clouds of clear now and thirty two we are top temperature down towards the southern parts of africa plenty of cloud with us at the moment we have seen some rather active showers here plenty of heavy downpours also lots of thunder and lightning as well this istomin slowly edging a little bit further north woods there for sunday so still some very wet weather stretching across parts of mozambique also southwest is generally a lot calmer here cape town will get to around twenty one degrees. Now members of the Transpacific Partnership trade deal have agreed to proceed with the pact without u. S. Involvement present donald trump withdrew support for the deal after assuming office soaring its future in doubt but the remaining leaders agreed to proceed on the sidelines of the apec summit in vietnam when he has more from. Now the Asia Pacific Economic cooperation summit ended with yet another photo opportunity the twenty one leaders came together in vietnam on the back of a difficult year for trade that continued on the sidelines of a pic with canadian Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau at the center he initially balked at a deal to push ahead with the Transpacific Partnership trade agreements involving eleven apec members but after further often heated discussions between government ministers all t p p members finally agreed on the core elements of the pact. All eleven of us have agreed on the content weve maintained exactly the same high standards to twelve i think weve maintained a balance weve avoided opting for lower standards there are lots of areas where if you rush to agree standards will be sacrificed but if you insist on high standards we can take a long time or some countries might drop out so all eleven countries are on board and this will send a very strong message to the u. S. And other countries in the region. That messages asia pacific countries see regional trade deals as the best way forward thats in contrast to the views of u. S. President donald trump who withdrew the United States from the t p p the Transpacific Partnership isnt finalized yet some parts of the deal still need to be negotiated but the fact that its still alive without the u. S. Combined with chinas increasingly assertive role in this region means that this apec summit has come to a close with a sense that the United States is looking more isolated even the final statement from apec leaders was contentious and took longer than usual to finalize reportedly because of u. S. Concerns about the wording the leaders called for the removal of market distorting subsidies came after President Trump was highly critical of unfair trade practices during his speech on friday or the promotion of free trade and investment in the Asia Pacific Region is a mission for apec member economies to maintain a pact as a key driver for regional integration. Despite the statement apec again showed that the United States under donald trump has a different view on trade to most other asia pacific nations wayne hay al jazeera donning vietnam and one additional note from the apec summit President Trump had a brief meeting with russias president Vladimir Putin says he believes buttons denials about allegations of interference in last years us president ial election he says the russian president told him he felt insulted by the accusations u. S. Intelligence community has concluded that russia did try to sway the poll in favor of trump a special prosecutor Robert Miller is currently investigating the matter. And a brief encounter between putin and trump wasnt the only thing to make news on the sidelines of the apec summit and yes follow the philippine president roderigo to territory is no stranger to controversy and comments that he made at the summit this week have certainly stirred a backlash. We should only on human rights but we should. Not digital in the me what makes a good death. People in the philippines smaller. In the middest of the children and the road to have much to fear and. There were. So we should call it a summit and i. Wouldnt do that make the philippines a event. Amnesty international was was quick to denounce those comments to territory has been heavily criticised over accusations of violating his citizens human rights. You can be. More. Moral and. Fine. When you know. You know. Now the focal point of amnesties criticism is president do territories war on drugs hes encouraged police to kill drug dealers and drug users even without trial in august last year the president said quote if you are still into drugs im going to kill you dont take this as a joke im not trying to make you laugh really kill you and quote in vietnam to terror tape talked about having killed someone when he was sixteen years old Rights Groups say Philippine Police are carrying out those orders up to Twelve Thousand suspected drug offenders have reportedly been killed since the start of the territorys government war on drugs now anna says criticism isnt just limited to terror as weve mentioned u. S. President donald trump was also at the apec summit and he said its you manila soon its a whole talks with the philippine president so n. S. T. International says that trump has a responsibility as a world leader to address to tear tace human rights record. I think from. You. If we feel. Youre going to be. Notifying you if you think that. Weve got to be very very very very. If you are responsible for. Nothing. And we. Love you you. Know. Right. Now buccellato also said that the United States should review and restrict the thirty two Million Dollars in u. S. Assistance that goes to the Philippine National police and that the u. S. Must make sure that no u. S. Aid supports human rights abuses Carlos Carlos conde from Human Rights Watch says that the u. N. Also needs to get involved here with an investigation to ensure that there is some sort of accountability but keep in mind that even as outsiders criticized the territory filipino citizens themselves are split on the president s war on drugs his Approval Rating has consistently been around fifty percent or higher now do you think the campaign is cruel or effective or something in between we want to hear from you so connect with us using the hash tag its any good and andriy you know president to take gave his First Exclusive interview to al jazeera soon after he was sworn into office last year he spoke to us about his controversial war on drugs his Foreign Policy relations with the u. S. And china do washing to be on line if youve missed it on t. V. Just click on shows and then talk to. When our live on the t. V. All now thousands of polish nationalists are holding their annual Independence Day march in the capital warsaw rally is largely being attended by supporters of the ruling law and Justice Party is recent Controversial Court reforms and refusal to welcome migrants has drawn criticism from the European Union the rally also draws support from far right groups several counterdemonstrations of planned including two large anti fascism and prodemocracy rallies we can now speak to Russell Foster from the department of European International studies at Kings College here in london thank you very much for speaking to us so poland is celebrating its Independence Day but it is an event that has come to be overshadowed by the far right how and why is the warsaw march how has it become a sort of one of the largest assemblies in the world for far right extremists well this seems to be the largest gathering of right wing nationalists and European Countries since the days of the third reich and it might initially seem strange that its taking place in poland because of course the poles of a very strong cultural memory of what happened to their country as a result of nationalism in other european nations but what were seeing in poland is a phenomenon that we can identify across europe which is a rise in ethnic nationalism and ties to to a nation state rather than to the European Union and also the strange phenomenon that younger people are protesting against the European Union against increasing immigration we have to remember that for polish citizens who were born after. One thousand nine hundred ninety one they dont remember the bad old days of the soviet union and there are few people left in europe now who remember the Second World War and the european project was created to prevent another war so for so many people especially in Eastern Europe the European Union is now the status quo a status quo which they associate with unemployment with high debt with difficulties in getting secure jobs and with increasing immigration and were expecting tens of thousands to turn out at this march our reporter whos in warsaw says Something Like one hundred thousand people might attend this year tell us more about the increasing participation of the use of. The youth vote is very important in europe because it was assumed in the one nine hundred ninety s. That young people would have more identification more affiliation with the whole of europe work rather than with nation states but in the last ten years since the credit crunch in the recession since austerity and particularly since the migration crisis weve seen young people feeling less listened to more pushed on to the margins of society and also seeking some sort of a collective belonging and identity which can describe who they are in a confusing and rapidly changing world so for young people particularly in Eastern European states these identity tarion right wing and sometimes white supremacist movements appeal to them because it gives them a sense of belonging and a sense of community so then is that something that can be fixed by better fulfillment of their Economic Expectations we always find that identity politics crop up a times of economic difficulty when the economy is stronger people are much less emotional theyre much less angry and frustrated so this movement will dissipate and decline as the economy improves but it wont go away altogether and if. If the European Union continues pressuring Eastern European states to take migrant quarters then were going to see these right wing movements gaining more power and more appeal and just to be clear about this in terms of the participants and whos going to be attending is it just those who live in poland because reports suggest that people from other parts of europe will be will be gathering for this much as well this is exactly right so this began in poland in two thousand and nine the emergence of right wing nationalists out there Independence Day celebrations but it attracts people from all over europe from scandinavia from western europe from Southeast Europe but even if it even attracts europeans who are not members of the European Union so one unsettling phenomenon that we are seeing is that upon european identity is emerging to a degree however its a very sinister identity which is based on white politics and exclusion of those who are deemed to not be culturally european are all thanks very much for sharing your thoughts with us appreciate it Russell Foster from Kings College here in london q. Im moving to other stories were covering iraqi forces have launched an offensive to capture one of the last remaining areas in the country under the control of i sell to iraqi infantry divisions alongside sonny tribal forces a carrying out the operation in Anbar Province its believed i saw fighters are holding some ten thousand civilians hostage in the town of. Thank. You joe here to tell us about what people talk about in sports and World Cup Qualifiers i imagine at salute me yes folly the work of qualifying is getting to the pointy end with eight spots still up for grabs but senegal fans can breathe a sigh of relief team made it with a two one win against south africa on friday to book their place in russia next year now its the First Time Since two thousand and two that the team known as the lions will play at a world cup the much was actually a replay of the same fixture about a year ago that the South Africans won two one the referee at that game was later found guilty by fee for of unlawfully influencing the results when he wanted a penalty for nonexistent handball and that is why the game had to be replayed the team thats already booked its place at the world cup is iceland weve been following them closely here on news grid this was asked attempting their famous viking clattering editorial meeting last month while icelands ministry of Foreign Affairs actually sent us an emergency struction from twitter to improve our technique but when the ice and Team Announced a bunch of friendlies played right here in cats our i just couldnt miss that opportunity i had fans from around the world send me some questions and i went to meet them a little earlier take a look. Its thirty degrees under the cats ass sun and the iceland team are moving up nicely for the biggest moment in their countrys sporting life then the smallest nation ever to qualify for world cup and having finally reached footballs highest stage it feels like theyve come in from the cold in more ways than one not the players have particularly noticed the new found their fate. Are you conscious that youve got this huge global following now you go on to social media of course and you know where whats happening but. Its very offensive erica from england she wants to know who are you hoping to avoid at the world cup draw on the first of december im hoping to. Brazil and germany what is it about brazil and germany particularly. During the day no one wants to be. A millionaire from argentina he also what are your expectations for the world cup and do you feel pressure going into such a historic occasion. I think is a nice to see. The group and then we put our goes in there but theres no question you know what we can do this one coming from eddie on facebook in london he asks you know when youre traveling around as a team do you guys hit mcdonalds because there arent any mcdonalds and i said firstly that true there are no mcdonalds in iceland so if you and you guys hit mcdonalds when youre traveling around you know. Whats the history behind the viking clap because i think Everybody Knows you guys because of that viking plant but why did that come from well i think it comes from motherwell in scotland but. Started doing it. Again a bit older doing. Just in public after the game its. Part of what we do and when we tried to do our in viking class i want you guys to give me a mark out of ten. So marks out of ten guys. Be completely honest its a strong five. And i was going to get lower where do you think i can make the improvement then the rhythm might might help. But when it comes to next years world cup in russia itll be iceland looking to find their rhythm as the beloved underdogs of football. Well if theyre going to be that brutal with their opponents they should be quite fine and on the subject of iceland a talent scout for months united have announced the show this week he was sent to take to vic to watch icelands friendly with the Czech Republic when the games actually almost nine thousand comes his way in doha never mind he can still rebook his flight to make it to iceland game with castle on tuesday we dont forget you can use videos and story ideas with us using the hash tag a.
