Very in a low profile situation about catalonia thinking that it would just go down and on the opposite it just kept increasing support for independence now for the past month or just from september the twenty if weve seen that suddenly all the resources from the state resources were put into action at the same time which was almost overwhelming for citizens here because it was Judiciary Police and political resources all of the same time now as you were just saying what is going to happen today no one knows but yesterday the speech from person from the Spanish Government was pretty harsh even suggesting someone could face a serious crime sentences so what is going to happen today we will see bob its pretty scary indeed a very tense situation certainly one that has no precedent here and all will be revealed in the hours to come. Thank you very much sonia a great deal of anticipation ahead of that speech in Parliament Later by the sun youre going to go in barcelona for us returning now to our top story and the rival palestinian factions fatah and hamas have begun reconstitution taksim egypt and capital cairo as bring in harry fox at once again our correspondent who is in ramallah in the occupied west bank kerry as you were saying its not the first time that theres been attempt at reconciliation between apartheid and hamas how optimistic how hopeful are palestinians this time around that their leaders will resolve their differences where they have experience of pretty bitter disappointments in the past most notably in twenty eleven and twenty fourteen this time as i was saying there is some amends and behind this some expressions of optimism from both sides and there is the fact of the egyptian pressure for this all to happen so lets hear from how people both in gaza and first here in ramallah have been responding to the prospects of these talks i doubt all those hours of the situation will remain the same with the talks by what was going to happen it cant get worse than it was. Here hopefully there will be reconciliation it would result in achievements for all palestinians but one because. Its better if theres reconciliation for fatah and hamas and all of us it would reflect on us and on the people in gaza economically and mentally. Honestly i do not trust them i am sixty five years of age and i have never seen more untrustworthy people but those two groups hamas and fatah. They made promises under oath and before the holy mosque in mecca to mend fences among them eleven years of past and the Palestinian People have been suffering but they did not take any action show me any positive sign gaza strip has become a dead body ignorance has prevailed unemployment look around you young men are not able to marry. First of all they will empower the youth Job Opportunities will be made available we expect the Economic Conditions to move forward especially now that weve been in frightening economic recession needless to mention the siege our lives depend just on opening the Border Crossing we have the right to move freely and lead a dignified life weve been denied many rights to these circumstances harry the negotiations in cairo are no doubt going to be very difficult what are the big standing somebody in boxing. Well they remain the ones which have been so so difficult in the past things such as how do you manage to fuse together the the operations that of that have grown up under hamas in things like security and other Government Services as well with the tens of thousands of p. A. A. Employees whove been sitting idle in the interim and perhaps more crucially than that the fact that hamas has made it clear that its military wing the al qassam brigades is entirely off the table as far as these talks are concerned the palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has said that he wont accept any solution which ends up with a lebanon style situation where there is a hezbollah like separate center of power and military power out with the civilian government we spoke to just jabril roget of the executive committee cetera general of yesterday and here as well was saying that they couldnt expect just to have come in and provide services and help the humanitarian situation while retaining full independence over their militias now this is something that is obviously going to be a problem at some stage but so far the indications that were getting from all sides really is that in the initial situation the talks will center on things that can be solved trying to facilitate the resumption fully of the administration in gaza trying to address some of those humanitarian concerns that you heard expressed in those remarks from people inside gaza the question is how long this kind of Holding Pattern can remain while those big obstructions still are there to be resolved at some stage in the future harry foster thank you very much for that harry. Spotting and stopping the fake News Facebook says its developed a tool to give users more context on what they read but admits its not always easy to flush out fiction from fact so how do we deal with this modern day reality of where does it leave social media this is inside story. Hello welcome to the program in doha im Adrian Finnegan fake news there is no doubt its become one of the key of twenty seventeen brought into the spotlight after the us president ial election last november it became clear that thousands of people were unintentionally sharing articles that were full of misinformation the resulting paranoia led people to accuse even once trusted sources including the New York Times of carrying fake news and social media is a core part of the problem facebook has finally decided to do something about it its testing a new feature called the i pad and when clicked it gives the reader more information about the article theyre reading the idea to give people context about their news sources so they can decide if articles are from publishers they trust and if the stories themselves are credible well facebooks come under attack for not doing this earlier critics say that the company has a responsibility to protect its users from fake news but facebooks chief Security Officer says its not so simple alex thomas tweeted on saturday that lots of. Journalists have celebrated academics whove made wild claims of how easy it is to spot fake news and propaganda without considering the downside of training Machine Learning systems to classify something as fake based upon ideologically biased Training Data an understanding of the risks of Machine Learning drives small c. Conservatism in solving some issues or facebook isnt the only tech company struggling to contain fake news you tube has changed its search algorithm to promote videos from mainstream news outlets instead of accounts that may serve up conspiracy theories but it hasnt said how it deems an account credible and you tubes earlier google has started to identify and label fact checked articles in the u. S. And some European Countries its also allowed people to report misleading content that shows up in its auto complete search function or in the featured snippet pops up above all of the other search results and twitter has also been criticized for allowing the spread of misinformation but its taken a very different approach to the issue to us as twitters Vice President of Public Policy wrote in a blog post in june that we cannot distinguish whether every single tweet from every person is truthful or not we as a company should not be the arbiter of truth so lets bring in our guests for today theyre all in london alice to read is a social media journalist of the press association who specializes in the spread of misinformation online Sebastian Moss is Technology Reporter for Data Center Dynamics and tom law is the director of campaigns and communications at the Ethical Journalism Network gentlemen welcome to you all im mr lets start with you what do you make of this facebook i button initiative is it going to be enough to stop the dissemination of fake malicious news on the platform. Well it is an excellent start and having a bus and around stories which provides extra context is something which from time has been missing from facebook and people see stories in their feeds and they dont necessarily sure where it came from the not necessary sure who wrote it so it is an excellent start but in my view there is the problem that people if they believe something if they want to believe something then no matter what amount of context theyre going to believe that maybe dismiss the context that comes with it so its not that facebook has grown too big too quickly to be able to control or to keep control of the material thats thats published on it that is a part of it as well i mean its not its not just a one dimensional issue here there are many factors in play which contribute to the spread of misinformation and false news and this information whatever we want to call it there are many things and the fact of the platforms themselves and how they work and how we interact with people on there thats a big part of it the oversight that goes into these platforms and how content spreads around them is part of it and also the actions of people outside of the platforms of media organizations of politicians of individuals in that its all of these are all factors within how this spreads but it is good as weve been saying that this new button has been added to address this sebastian loss is it possible to put the fake news genie back in the bottle now that its out. I mean it is never possible you just need to look at journalists and how much they struggle to kind of work out whats true and whats not its a daily battle for facebook obviously people going to share what they want to share and you can do what you think is like the i initiative to raise some awareness but at the end of day people want to share something they want to share so what do you think facebook should be doing then to make sure that a lot of this misinformation this false fake news doesnt get out there. I think i mean the eye is a good start but its a very small button and people are not clipped my knowledge is i think at the end of day you need a lot of people that they made three point nine billion dollars in profit last quarter so they can afford a few people to be working at least on the biggest news stories are being shared looking at them and seeing if theyre false or not and then flying out with maybe a bigger more visible icon story do i was there about about facebook having perhaps grown too big too quickly i mean given the number of people that use it that what is it Something Like a quarter of the worlds population surely you can never have enough humans enough journalists looking at content to sift out the bad stuff can you with the amount of material thats published on the on the platform. Facebook is obviously the biggest platform in the world when it comes to information sharing we have two billion more than two billion monthly active users and that is a huge proportion of the whole population as the bus and said hopefully we can as facebook plans to employ some more people to be over to be able to oversee this and be able to oversee how information gets shared but as you also mentioned there is the problem that people are now just believing what they want to believe and as human beings the way our brain works were more biased to believe something if it confirms how we understand the world to be or how we want the world to be and those kind of stories that fit with our worldview bypass our kind of Critical Thinking faculties so who are often going to believe something no matter whats Fact Checkers or journalists say and its you know that sounds like a very pessimistic view on all of this but what we need to do in my view is to yes have the context been absolutely but raise the importance and the value that people hold on the truth and on providing proof for what theyre saying and on the negative aspects of lying and online especially on social networks and not just facebook a lot of those kind of social factors have disappeared if i was to come on here and just tell many lies i hopefully wouldnt be invited back but online on thin social Networks People get a thumbs up or a star as a positive reinforcement for spreading lies that fits with peoples worldview and that also acts as a verification marker so it is a very multifaceted problem with how those Networks Work in allowing this kind of false information to spread that journalists and real people are going to be able to help to a degree but not in totality ok so well look at some of the ways in which perhaps that aspect of this problem can be solved in a minute but suspense did you do you agree with that that this is more perhaps a bit of a social problem than the technology problem. Yeah i mean at the end of the day you are responsible for what you decide to read what you decide to share what you decide to like and there are some fake news stories that are highly to do as a fake news story that went viral and they seem quite obvious as fake news stories so we do need to work on on ourselves and working out how to kind of control what we ingest the same Time Facebook does have a duty as that middleman as a company that has increasingly trying to get involved in the media sphere trying to increase the amount of publishers and websites that go on and if it wants to be part of the Media Industry it needs to understand that it also needs to take a part be part of that struggle to work out what is true and whats not told law from the Ethical Journalism Network should face book and other social media platforms and Search Engines be forced to give priorities information that is that is in the public good. Well i do they should be forced to be much better if they took that sponsibility upon themselves what weve seen recently in in germany are laws being created to fine Facebook Google and others huge amounts of money for hate speech and fake news online and that will probably result in both of those companies removing content hastily and actually having a Chilling Effect on freedom of speech so selfregulation on an industry level and also on the individual level for those companies is is what we need and so far weve seen that without public pressure and without scandals such as the misinformation broadcast after the recent las vegas shooting. We have to we have to find a way to address this now the arguments made that this is going to have a century effect on on freedom of speech i think is a bit of a. False argument to make when people go on facebook to find out news about a terrorist attack or a breaking news story they want to find Accurate Information and the fact that it took so long for misinformation to be removed from their algorithm is is very problematic but what we need to know is how is it removed from the algorithm what choices were made on the what guidelines we cant labor under the are under the false idea that algorithms were not made by people with guidelines as to as to what they should show and so if Google Facebook and twitter and others are going to make these adjustments we have to have to be more transparent about how they do it and if theyre going to hire human editors to make choices we have to know what the guidelines under which they operate so that they can be held accountable by their audiences so. Facebook sites business reasons to explain why that it doesnt talk about how its algorithms work but for. What youre saying is that facebooks apparent lack of respect for transparency and ethical standards are eroding trust not just in it in it but but on other social media platforms to absolutely i mean the some of facebooks guidelines were leaked to the guardian a few months ago and they published some great reporting called the Facebook Files where they had examples of what facebook allows and and doesnt allow and some of it looking at it just doesnt doesnt make any sense and often in one context publishing a certain image of an Extremist Group or of a terrorist or terrorism symbol would be warranted in other times it wouldnt be but those choices should be made or in journalism we make them on a case by case basis depending on ideas such as whats in the Public Interest and Everything Else and you know what you have is facebook employing. Thousands of people in not directly as facebook employees but for other companies who are on the extreme time pressures to go for and sift through content and hit delete or to or to raise it to one of their superiors based on very very you know basic criteria now first of all these should have been published that journalists like us and others and so Society Groups have a real debate around what content is acceptable and what content isnt and and and and what context otherwise eventually of a social media platforms and others will have their guidelines leaked and then the exposure that way i would say its much better from a p. R. Point of view for these companies to get ahead of the game and have a much better engagement and a conversation with the Journalist Community and Media Community more widely and the longer that they hide behind this idea of we cant talk about this because its an interval property or you want to understand it because its coding or and these kind of arguments i dont think it benefits them i dont think it benefits consumer. I dont think it benefits people who are audience is who dont want to have clearly false misleading information put in front of them when their scorn for that their news feed ok you raise a couple of issues there alister should there be public oversight of the technology that these companies are using to fill our news feeds and and search results should should algorithms be regulated this is the big secrets that they wont talk about for business reasons is it even possible to regulate an algorithm. Well well first you need to understand what the algorithm is and because theyve been keeping that secret for so long its very difficult to understand when and how it may be regulated i do agree with tom in that having that kind of very public oversight its not necessarily being directly involved in what the algorithm doesnt decide in the terms of in deciding what actions it can or cannot take but in understanding how that works understanding the moderation policies and having a public conversation around that allows different voices to be heard because what we see not just on facebook but on all kinds of these these Online Platforms is that certain pieces of content are being removed like for example Breast Feeding videos while hate speech is allowed to stay up because the more of the terms of the moderation and the content guidelines on the the public and the there have been discussed and seem to be paid taking priority over certain things which arent necessarily public harmful in a public way but which may offend their guidelines against certain types of other things so theyre still having an actual conversation as tom says about what about what is acceptable and what isnt excess acceptable because there are always going to be people who will speak out against censorship no matter what that censorship is but having a Public Public conversation about it is how we have had our laws built over many many years decades centuries but online were not ready for that you know and we havent actually been able to apply that same thought process and same public process to understanding what is acceptable and what is not and how that is dealt with suggested a new nodding of the things that weve weve discussed in the last few minutes lets just pick up on one thing that the tom will say just a bit ago companies such as google and facebook. Other assurances that theyre cracking down on fake news only a result of the bad publicity that thats been generated since the president ial election last november. I mean you know almost definitely you had right after the election you had facebook c. E. O. Say it was pretty crazy that facebook fake news had any impact on the election and now theyve kind of walked back that statement but only because of the mounting Media Attention and the mounting political attention otherwise they would they want to just push this under the carpet they dont want to have to deal with this this is complicated is it difficult is it expensive theres no easy way out theres no easy way to do this they just want to increase profits they want to increase the amount of articles people share it preferrable to them that people share content they like and put them into narrow narrow groups because they can target them with their own are they dont want to have to deal with this and theyre only dealing with it because of Media Attention again and again and again so is that suggestive why it why companies such as google and facebook do it appear to act quickly and else where when journalists or even just. Other users flag articles as being fake all delicious i think its a mixture of they dont want to deal with it they also dont know how to deal with it and theyre also worried that theyll deal with it wrong and then they want to spark of regulation and thats the thing they see and theyre scared of the most of it if regulation comes along and destroys their Business Models that can its the one thing that can actually stop them so theyre very scared and theyre approaching this very carefully tom a lot two thirds of American Adults get their news from social Media Companies like google and facebook dominate Public Discourse should they be designated and regulated as as publishers and made to abide by the laws the traditional Media Companies Companies Like this one for instance have to abide by other publishers have to follow. Well theyre not traditional publishers as as News Organizations like like aljazeera and others but i think that you cant completely ignore ignore them in but if you sense i think to be much while i think facebook and google others would prefer to find a way of doing that that themselves but the moment that theyre not. Theyre not meeting that that challenge and the fact that they do remove some misinformation or some deliberate. Content thats masquerading as as news is fine but you know what is the process by which thats removes what the guidelines by which they they they they they choose to use to to do that and without publishing that so the audiences can hold onto accounts like they would have an another News Organization i mean you can look at the news of the nations code of ethics you might have a concept like the news on. That you can complain to the having a much Better Process around that is is whats needed and we have to come to terms with the fact that yes people are gathering their news from from social networks more and more and more but the same time we have to realize that. The job plea of google and facebook have completely undercut the the financial the of the way that journalism used to fund itself which we used to nourish good reporting and going back to las vegas incident one for the New York Times or Washington Post found their First Amendment rights or their their wish for free speech in any way in inhibited by the values of journalism by making sure they were accurate they were independent they were impartial and and to make sure that they that they were correct in what their reporters so i think theres a lot that the if they wanted to that these Tech Companies could learn from journalism and and from journalists if if they were willing to to listen more and not hide behind these these arguments around. Intellectual property and and and freedom of speech online tom who should be accountable for the lies a fraud like law lies published on social media what penalty should be paid and by whom i mean you cant hold an algorithm or a piece of code to account can you. No you cant but the often these algorithms are gains by people who know exactly how to make their results appear on top of the google or to feature on Facebook News feed you can do that by paying you know adverts has been much in the news recently about how they were used during the join the us election so the people that publish that content in the first place. You know must be highlighted and they should be it remains very clear if they are purveyors of misinformation or if they are more reliable outlets now how exactly thats hearted on facebook and on google i know they are working on that in terms of you know repercussions of it need to think very carefully about that we dont want to have a Chilling Effect on freedom of speech and he was ability to to communicate online but i think its very important that media consumers understand in far greater detail what theyre consuming and and what they can trust online and that comes down to efforts of literacy foot for foot literacy which i think is you know essentially important we we also have to ask ourselves as individuals what are we doing to make sure that were not sharing false information that just because we agree with something we dont just click like and and click share so its circuit is a mixture of of regulation on the individuals on individual level on the industry level under the companies themselves we need to find answers to or its alister should society as a whole take more responsibility for peoples go ability when it comes to new should Information Literacy be taught in schools for example to ensure that the people are more discerning and more critical of what they they see and read online. Absolutely one hundred percent is that something which should be taught in schools from a very early age is how to decide a piece of information or piece of text and understand what whether its been sourced at all and when i was at school in history lessons you would look at primary sources and second resources and things like that to see whether something has been or who wrote it and what influence this might be on the person when they wrote it and if history has taught us anything its that skilled liars when given a platform can be very dangerous and when people arent bringing those intrinsic values of holding truth holding truth up and Holding People to account for their words that kind of a very dangerous effect on society so in terms of individuals taking responsibility teachers teaching this in schools politicians or whoever it may be bringing in those kind of education into society as a whole can only be a positive thing in my view or you would you say that the basically you have to change the behavior of the audience to to change the behavior of of anyone whos producing the fake news is that what you say well the people who produce well i mean if that if that if audiences are more discerning in what they view then the news wont get shared as much it will wither on the vine it wont go if people are more discerning about the information they consume and they can spot mistruths more readily and there are the kind of the extra social repercussions of certain false news which happen in the real world which dont necessarily happen online then that that misinformation wont travel as much so yes there should be. Repercussions on the people who share i dont think necessarily you know legal or legislative repercussions because people can show misinformation accidentally. It is on people and on individuals to be responsible for what they share and as a supper for that is very difficult online and when it comes to things like facebook and twitter and google and Everything Else there are positive reinforcements around sharing things which might not be true but if they chime with peoples views that. Again as a verification marker if there are five hundred five hundred little heart notes next to something which is a blatant lie people might believe it because its been viewed and heard so often but we have to bring some of those social repercussions that happen in the real world blacks of the online world and we can only do that together ok so best to very briefly because were always out of time do you agree with that. I actually believe in peoples right to share things that things are stupid to be honest i think if someone wants to share something thats not entirely true they might share in that belief that is true they we should always expect everyone to have a full understanding of all the rights and wrongs of publishing and news we can hopefully try and teach them but at the end of the day facebook in my view should be paying to a Third Party Independent body that looks at this looks at that algorithm and works out how to at least trying tackle some of the biggest offenders of this all right to take out in the people that are sharing the stories i dont know ok really good to talk to you jeff but there were stand it thank you very much indeed i was to read tom law and Sebastian Moss and as always thank you for what you dont forget you can see the program again at any time just by going to the web site al jazeera dot com and to further discuss join us on our Facebook Page facebook dot com forward slash a. Hello youre watching aljazeera arms the whole roman these are all top stories an announcement is expected in spain later on choose day over the future of the countrys catalonia region its leader Charles Moore has arrived at the Regional Parliament in barcelona and may be preparing to make a unilateral declaration of independence but the Spanish Government has warned it will act on any attempt to divide the country. From barcelona. All eyes are on catalyst preacherman the castle and president as he gets ready to make his address to parliament will he come out right and make that declaration of independence as many from within his party and from the session this movement have been pressuring him to do especially in the last few days but at taking a look from outside of that situation spain has made no doubts about the fact that it would use the full force of the law to try and prevent such a situation from happening looking outside of spray in itself voices from within the European Union such as germany and france have said that what is really necessary right now is for there to be unity that set that country and indeed the European Union cannot afford this instability it has clearly staked its side on the side of the Spanish Government to try and preserve that unity as well and also reminding the Catalan Government that not only would it be outside of the European Union but it would also not be part of the euro zone as well that group would prove to be a very difficult issue for the president himself now voices within his party say that perhaps these declaration of independence would be not would be a way of trying to get the Spanish Government to have some kind of dialogue on the future of catalonia there have been complaints that for years despite. Government has not listened to them and perhaps with a declaration of independence all the parties can sit on the ground the table and start to discuss exactly the way to go forward but this is something that the Spanish Government is not entertaining in the slightest and even there have been calls from within. Catalan coalition saying that perhaps this is not the right time to pursue such a measure and that what is needed now is a third way perhaps a mediation from the European Union to go forward and begin a proper dialogue negotiators from the rival palestinian political movements of fattah and hamas are in cairo for talks on reconciling their decade long split it follows last weeks Palestinian Authority Cabinet Meeting attended by both sides the first to be held in gaza in three years now there are reports of a dramatic increase in the number of injured refugees fleeing ongoing violence and me and there have been a lol in recent days but its thought ten thousand people crossed into bangladesh on monday more than half a million have left me and more since the military crackdown began six weeks ago. I am fat man i am an online journalist. I married and have a four year old daughter. I grew up in sweden but ameritrade and belgian. It was while making a web documentary fog of the you know about female genital mutilation that i realize how deeply rooted it is in many cultures including my own. I have family and friends who have been through it but its not something you talk about. As a child i attended a close relatives gathering after she was caught. It was then that i wondered have i been copped. To my relief my mother told me that she chose not to. When i think about the Severe Health risks involved in f g m a contact but wonder. Why does this practice continue in so many countries. And what would it take for to start with and. And how do some manage to change my own Health Attitudes towards cutting was stupid having their own culture. You know and then there are more personal questions like whether my mother has been caught. Im determined to find out more about the Different Reasons why f. Jam continues and to understand better whats needed to end it. Ive come to somaliland because together with the rest of somalia it has the highest. To female genital mutilation in the world. Is banned in most countries but here its still legal. In somaliland children mostly caught between the ages of six and eight. But. After come to the afghans of our geisha the capital to meet a traditional cutter. Has been cutting girls for over forty years around twenty five a day a tap peak. How many girls have you got what you look about and what type of cuts have you performed on the girls. Couldnt father know why entirely. Your little yeah. Yeah and this italy good new. Little i. Sucked the hell out so would you for. Now q so know what entire this was so i thought id see him and i will also tell you. No rush owes me the most common cotton somaliland the chorus the most severe foreign ikhwan what do you do this for oh how is my rock and. So put in the clouds. Because. You dont you the night my. Ass im. Telling you how the war on his i dont know. What i want. Just friends. So i can so had i. So had i can you show me how do you determine. How big the hole should be that you leave. This is how big the opening is only this but. And youre supposed to urinate from this when youre a teenager mr asian go through this whole. Over ninety percent of girls in somaliland are cut by traditional cutting. Unlike most have no medical training. Most girls and women here have had the for rooney and i want to know the consequences. Im a big the senior midwife at the local hospital. You have a really beautiful thank you very much she was born in somalia on earth moved to freedom as a result of the civil war. Nineteen ninety nine i decided to come back to move something for most people because i most needed here how have you been involved in the fight against. Cases which will help those who have fibro fibro to say too much. Which is which form is the collected blood. The blood if the space is fairly small the ministership cannot go out or if the mantle in the ghetto gets diminished station there will be something left in the uterus this will form. This becomes bigger people will see this she has a little. Baby in her stomach so the doctor takes out this and the girl will be ok. I have help from the megan Maternity Hospital in arkansas. And. I want to live it was priceless were going to see who said that it was. Two days a week and a counselor scaring out Educational Outreach work in the community. Or have a love affair of the little boy. Or from the. Only way you give it. A line in my life im reminding. There how how do you know youre mature and i am a child. Yes i really actually. What i was. Once you discover how stories with the counselors. Shes eighteen and pregnant with her first charge. Shes had to for i want to cut. My. Im going to. Go to hell heck im. Going to. Talk to. My god and im. Going to. Have a will to be alive and i. Think. So why do you think somaliland have the highest percentage when it comes to f e m globally it takes time to leave the culture grandmother does and mother is they still all on with the suturing and if g. M. Is special the grandmothers are very very close or they are there they will look leaflet there was a lady who had three girls she came to me at the hospital i told her to go back to the home and see i did the operation she is very killer for describing mother when the guests are going to authorities she goes after them she listen is the most of their. Oh because when that girl is circumcised they smallness with their with how do you want it because it is like a drug is going to be all she cried she said all my daughter the good saddle you need to like a boys what you did you did nothing. Do you think that eventually people will abandon this eventually but to do is take time. As i watch these young people at a wedding reception i wonder how many of the men would be willing to marry an uncut woman in the future. For saying a local journalist post as an afghan message on social media i was curious to know why i did the facebook update of where you said some men believe after g. M. Deduces a womans sexual desire they say this increases her appeal what made you write this i want to talk because its problem for us. To say against the down human. Of the goddess a human an arm that right when you get my do you want to my family have cut their own cut and cut ok are you married know you want to be someone who is cut or noncorrupt. Who you really. Should target some of. The other kind of. My heart in live and grow your own little hospital and. Its all that i in a lot of time which is to. Im a woman. I come from a culture that also practices that im not the cup. I know other women based on what other women have told me that is there is no there is no good in it if they tell you this is hurting us this is literally killing us and we need to stop we didnt listen. To the camilla. The dog whistle. Im surprised that a young man should feel so strongly about holding on to this tradition when so harmful. If ever g. M. Is to end changing mens attitudes will be essential. To have not Done University hospital collects detailed information on trends in female cutting. Medicare says two thousand and two all antenatal patients are asked what kind of cuts have had and if they intend to cut their daughters. You know. This is rare to see. My daughter. In two thousand and two ninety seven percent of female patient had undergone the pharaonic cut and most intended the same for their daughters. But that has changed. Went into type. One they calls. It a brisk cut. One is the one that theres a little bit of tip but tied to a dakota how fast can a truce we know or cuts doesnt have any benefits. I just. Want to my friend dr shapiro introduces me to a friend whos at the hospital on a postnatal liver birth order days ago so there are interesting bits of the circle and stop. With the midwife and know the harmful effects are for only cutting from passing experience. Something else. At that time. So if you pay when you want to mutilate i cant. Quit. My for that if secondly you are coward while you took. The festival the way i feel when im sixteen years. The minister should secondly. I feel a lot of been bad. This problem is for. The some cycle communication i feel when i see linda took over creation when a merry go round. To go for the cut and never fucking that to me. Fred if it is. Did you feel any resentment towards your mother and your grandmother yeah but to my mother she heard the question. As im leaving somalia i feel privileged to have met a woman who share the stories with me. But im overcome with emotion as i realize virtually every women here have been caught. And with it. Ive always known about the numbers and the facts and the figures but when you come face to face to all women whove gone through it it seems like the woman who after endorses and the children were after indoors as you go through cycles of pain. For what. Has happened to so many women and girls like my mom. Im so happy that. I dont know why she didnt come. But im so grateful. Because my life would have been so much different because i feel good. Over the go through the pain. To go through the other not to be able to do something that its a its a god given thing to peek. You cant pee. And then you promise to ration and then when you have to have sex you dont enjoy it and its like painful. And then you have to give birth and then it just continues. Im so grateful that. I didnt go through that and when i meet. Those women who have to go through it. Ive come to kenya to find out more about a totally different culture. But over forty tribes here with diverse cultures and traditions. The majority dont practice the cuts at all. But to several including the masai cutting has been a centuries old tradition until recently. Today meeting twenty eight year old nice and getting. Myself managed to talk to me rather kit f. E. M. And have village of my young not. Traditionally for the messiah cutting is a rite of passage marking the transition from girlhood to womanhood usually between the ages of mine and fourteen. The ritual involves some most of you. He lost his release because of what i used to see gas even if theyre trying to be strong but you can see that deafening a lot of us are leading. This Community Nice with the only gun in her village who refused to be cut. Out of my classmates who are from this community all of them undergoing. And they didnt they were not able to get they have to find a husband for you. So right now almost all of them have three four five children and a. Jumble. Whats your name my name is our what a beautiful name have they been a Second Thought i know they have been fact im so used how do you feel about not being caught. So what would you like to do when you grow up. Ok thank you. As a result of nices determination to end f. E. M. No young girl has been cut here since two thousand and twelve. The messiah and a patriarchal society. And i first have to persuade the Young Warriors called morans to help and the practice. Recruiting douglas the leader of them runs was the beginning. What did you do nice to make them change their opinion about that douglas was the first person to accept my walk the resistance was there from all over but then again i had to have a cheek because when i go to them ill go with someone like that less so ill make sure that he talks before i talk so what did you do to persuade them around in the community it was very hard for us to conform to the boys because they say that they can not. Because even its not sometimes theyd shes not a woman then we need an example of some of the dead that we have seen in the community they said ok its true and lets forget it i think it took more than five years for them just to accept it now we decided to come up with some time until we came up and let the parade go by said if the pentagon from this community and we want them to upgrade to become a woman we bless them then we look at the same cows that we celebrate hold together but we didnt cut so thats what weve come up with. Douglas bring some of his friends or morons to meet me. Yeah we mix of moderate to more than ok i dont mind it more than you know what actually happens when i cut you know get along. And im very sorry and i would say. You live in the me when i go. I dont know and im like yeah. I dont know. But i will you know when you. Want to. You know have a nice room with them around a graphic video over to you know go with a knife. And. Yeah. Well i think that. You know we were. Going to do think that. I dont know larry and i were not going to do you have a daughter. How would you feel if someone said she needed to be cut and that we were going well i think it was one of the powerful tools whod been using when we had first seen them on the issues of female genital mutilation and there was another how very persuasive in santa for the Young Warriors. When we see it as a moron as we talk about if they sleep with come take a gun. Hes very sweet insects now thats what also contains most of them what i have to say we dont need to go for it so theres a bit of. Meeting the messiah in the manja gives me hope. If one woman can change attitudes in one village perhaps with time its possible to change entire countries. We are witnessing around the word this hungry money which is only looking at how to make the next profit devastating economies devastating ecosystems putting a price on the protection of nature Green Economy is sound good but it was all about privatizing of nature should our environment be for sale what were trying to do this destroyed people to stabilize the country by giving them a financial incentive to do that pricing the planet at this time on aljazeera new yorkers are very receptive to it because it is such an International City theyre very interested in that global perspective that aljazeera provides. In the hash tag era when News Coverage consists of a punchy had like a five second sound bite not an easy solution. To delve deeper for says challenge the status quo expose double standards and debate the contradictions join me. For a new season of the show the frank. Up front. But this time ill just hear it. Oh you want your knowledge is there im still robin in doha these are our top stories an announcement is expected in spain later on tuesday over the future of the countrys catalonia region its leader chalet as the war has arrived in the Regional Parliament in barcelona and may be preparing to make a unilateral declaration of independence but the Spanish Government has worn little act or any attempt to divide the country because she is from the rival palestinian political movements of fatah and hamas are in cairo for talks on reconciling their decade long split it follows last weeks Palestinian Authority Cabinet Meeting attended by both sides the first to be held in gaza in three years there are reports of a dramatic increase in the number of refugees fleeing ongoing violence in me and they have been alone in recent days but its thought ten thousand people cross into bangladesh on monday more than half a million have left me a massive military crackdown began six weeks ago polls open in liberia to elect a new leader after twelve years president Ellen Johnson sirleaf south africas first elected female leader is stepping down after two terms in office twenty candidates are competing to replace her. The north west of kenya is home to a tribe named the pocket of practiced f. D. M. For centuries as an act of perfection. To me dumb to let your son whos devoted her life to ending if she am in her home county of west. Shes married with two young children. And until last twenty eight shes one of the few women of our age in this county who havent been cut. Really and that escape let up in either i witnessed. That her kids are not allowed to witness as a young girl is only eleven years old and this community indian is performing to a status this. Which is a slate cut. Yeah thats done in public with the presence of men and women and young girls and he young boys and this year yes we see it we see it but they just you know like a slight cut just immediately after the first day that women are taken to and then that are taken to a sacred place like a bush so we sneaked in and what i just saw on the second stage was so shocking my cousin was laying down there in a pool no blood yes and women were pinning her down and had to completely you know theres a one of us who really butchering like you know how do you cut because of me. I was expecting its not to do this just that yeah but she was really doing this you know yes with a knife and she was screaming but us claims were being covered by the women singing and you know the trying to talk to cover her screams and she was helpless what was left to their horse just like red flesh yes i still cant believe that this is something that were still debating about. Honestly. It was this dramatic experience that made dr refused to become a motivated how to set up a charity to help and i feel. Were heading to the village of sandwich with one hundred sixty girls are preparing for an attorney to right of passage ceremony. We just saw me to be lindsay because intelligible to us and to know that they decided to. Have. The trip to sandwich from them to leave the house takes two and a half hours through mountain passes on bumpy roads. To school and the first good. For the well come when we get makes it worse or. In the pocket culture cutting traditionally involve the celebration in which the whole Community Takes part. The girls are to have sing their dances for the alternatives harmony. Is real life come in it was beautiful i dont expect to see the book of committed love and sing and searing we wanted people to know that we love our culture we know we love every bit of it only but from the cut yes this is where the the feel there is such a source and i think put in here the teachers are from the same community. The girls received four days of lessons before their graduation day. Today theyre learning exactly what have jam involved and the Health Complications using models. About the madonna no no no no no no no no. No would that you were. Going to love someone to become us to. You know were not good. When you have been caught you put into seclusion for one month whereby your thought how to become a good ways how to treat your husband how to cook so we do the opposite we bring the girls in here we teach them like their childrens rights work you know it is them about Health Implications of their so its basically same like same thing without the cart but a different teaching because they want these girls to be important people in the society rather than at my thing i want them to learn her colleagues have had to work hard to change the attitudes of parents. In the pocket community a cut girl can bring significant economic advantage to a poor family. A girl is made of a man brings dowry into in terms of house and ill tell you that if for this community the price is quite high especially the girl is young and cut whats the potential that it has to older men because they bring good number of culls as much as many of articles because of poverty situation theyre tending to their girls when theyre still young and then they marry them off and they get there is quick quick quick quick quick well so how much is the girl worse foreign catgirl you can actually be given away at her for a price million years back for they might even give you away for free. Because they just want to get rid of your body and you not. Have to moores graduation the girls will sing and dance to some composed by looking musician lucky to have a pass on the reason for wanting to and. Can you think is done. Because. No one helped her. But i want to know he will gnaw. At the guy. He said to. Me. What was the name of your sister Clementine Clementine how old was she living in. Government and more local moran. Illegal in kenya since two thousand and one. Around here have been largely ineffective. Around his village and the villages around. Most of them are still being cut i mean we have not been able to reach out to everybody this is a big big big land you know its a big county. I find out from dawn to know thats one of her younger sisters run away to be cut with friends. I know due to last few years but i wonder if the older generation a mother and grandmother supported her sisters decision she takes me to meet. Dad and he said. Done it thank you so much that will mean you. Want to now you. Good lord. I never get more. Vocal that i need a new. One hugo weaving down you probably know what a little devil with him at the barn you can now go on a little you can leave you alone and when you know were beginning we wanted other more and the you know the for not. Looking for the. Dollar must. Now im going to die you know im going to be. Really a man of the love for me so if she were hiding in the forest. So youre against it because of the law but in your time if there was a good. One last year well. You know what they. Want i want you to know the meaning you know. What im gonna do you well you. Gotta come i saw. Your man on. Meeting them till of crime other makes me appreciate why the key to ending f. Jamming with is keeping girls in school. That way pens dont have to rely on a dowry to help support them their elders educated girls can pay for their own cows. Today the time to write of passes is being held in the market square. Hundreds of people from many different religious have come to with miseducation. For. That was. A find out that some of the girls have made great sacrifices to be here today. And the many different here doesnt do today. Its just you here no one else from the village. For the commune they would become. Like. Are you here today. Theyre not here. To make them. And here just along with. Lets go and join. With another go who catches my eye the minute someone. Even lost an impression on me. The presence of dignitaries here is a testament to them to the success it means ill turn to have this type of approval of important. The vast majority of pocket people are christian in the Graduation Ceremony and with the blessing. Patterns and elders stand behind the girls that belong to their villages. Nah. Youre there was wonderful and touching to see all the Community Leaders and the parents. Standing behind the young girls symbolically it was like saying we have your back we have your back with support you and was a forty decision not to be caught it was wonderful to see. Just wonderful. I wanted to meet. A girl i know to starting a family she ran away from him after her father began beating her mother believing she was a responsible for the futile to be cut. You know get away. What you need. To. Diminish. In all who dont live. Under the. Law. At this again im going to go all molong up with only one jan are going to. So your family have shandor the push their way bowling only to meet the burden on you. What do you say to young girls who are about to attend the alternative rite of passage where do you say to them any more you have i dont i look really one eric i dont know me or many dylan look at the. Edge you would get a number on the new community in the crowd was cute i see a little less because im in the generally illegal and near iran again the element of the novolog signal going to the other did indeed ugh so ideally i thought id see that there was neither of you gentlemen so what are your hopes and dreams for the future but if you know im grown man and i dont shoot a ball but then again i dont want to and were going to jen i generally are pretty nimble on this is slow will. Cure does your job. Crew be in school what is. Our main course the nanogram im a lan why are you you know some of the beaches. No meeting a lonely lonely morning all of a sudden my nonunion there lit yeah and its a good reality nandini like guardian and american and it was a dragon when in an enemy he was able to rock on the back of theres a tough question. I think youre very very because i cant imagine giving up you know you live your whole family behind your siblings your father and your mother i dont know what i would have done then again ive done all together let it does he get sick when it that rudy was your dear one by merely a man you know. What i see when i look at you i think someone i can see a lot of sadness in your eye but i can also see strength and determination so i believe that one day youll have your own family one day you have your degree i believe that you will achieve all of dreams so. Spending time with them to learn has been an inspiration to me through her resilience and example shes inspired so many others like ellie im sure in turn that element do the same yet. I believe kenya my thoughts turn to my family in sweden its time to face my own taboos. Yeah. Back in stockholm i meet up with my all childhood friend and fellow writer translated with china and china. My space were. Actually at them again. Neither of us know enough about why the cut is performed in our own culture im going to introduce you to some ladies like our parents generation you know that generation that doesnt talk and i think is going to be interesting because they work with the subject you know lets go. With merit and i shot eritrea and. They support women in the diaspora and sweden just for our story you. Missed on our last one interactions about year history you know your mom. From then into last till then inflatable hone down there in muncie whos almost say. In your past osh we feed our entire barnett or do whole a public arena wonderful probably all. Someone else like they make a mirror and saw for four hundred million or flick or given a small guilty and im doesnt go far from the end of them so talking to throughout the. Day. You know men their. Consequences are that their forces cant stop us so the whole year can score up an. Approach that persists over the only. Exit or so minutes the no. Protests of the or day dot com there were forty i should get off the ship maneuver on go to the front i think this court did what it the heart into. The threat itself but. Also have always known ive not been caught ive never asked my mother why i actually am is not a subject to discuss but today were going to talk about. It took a lot of convincing to persuade my mother to take part in this film my father and sister refused due to the taboo thats the subject. To the person in question i need to ask my mother that makes me uncomfortable. So i start with the easy one. Listen to a. Machine which knows the machine we are near which mark would wish they had been i would add. Ya need to come in and rule motion work to life and thats a deal where. They. Can see and control who identified that would prevent most voted like the last out of oh no not at all Division Like announced but i would like an individual to have been by her mum must have remarked on a market that damn machine and run the. I feel such a relief after speaking with my mother i know now that she did not endure the worst form of f. D. R. And i feel proud of my parents decision to end the practice which meant that i did not endure it and in turn neither when my daughter. This journey cements my belief that as g. M. Will end one day change will come but it must come from within. From those who understand that the richness and uniqueness of culture does not depend on traditions harmful to woman. A Family Business handed down from generation to generation but when this funeral director retires will his son continue the tradition i dont think he was actually before just like i dont feel like i was actually built for a difficult choice for an aljazeera producer caught between two worlds well its really five tending to the dead with a living get better an intimate portrait of an industry most encounter only fleetingly aljazeera correspondent death in the family at this time. By the springtime flowering of a mountain lake. To the first snowfall on a winters day. Welcome back to a look at the americas now and in south america plan to shower shop across the amazon basin weve also this frontal system which is being affected in parts of paraguayan down through into the far south of brazil that system moves further towards the southeast as we head through into wednesday so asuncion should be drawn up with us stage but pretty heavy rain in places meanwhile weve got a frontal system pushing in across parts of a chilly so some snow over the andes otherwise fine conditions for rio with highs of thirty three degrees so lets head up into the caribbean region for the islands without a fair few showers around protecting more eastern areas its also looking pretty wet up through the isthmus some heavy rain here and some heavy rain in the forecast also particularly more on the caribbean side of the gulf of compaq so look at the forecast there for choose a mexico seeing some showers and twenty two degrees heading into wednesday heavy showers extend all the way down through the isthmus and the islands getting a fair few showers.
