Alan “Big Al” Scott Jacobson, age 70, of La Crosse, WI, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Friday, October 13, 2023, at Mulder Health Care Center in West Salem, WI, after a four year battle with Lewy body dementia. Al was born on Dec. 16, 1952, in Superior, WI, the son of Harry and Bonnie (Hess) Jacobson. He was a 1971 graduate of Superior High School and married Catherine Ann Bukovich on May 19, 1979, at his parents’ home at Sand Bar Lake in Barnes, WI. The couple lived in Barnes for 43 years where they raised their family and formed many close friendships. In 2022, they moved to La Crosse to be closer to family and healthcare resources. For 42 years, Al worked as a journeyman boilermaker at Fraser Shipyards in Superior. He was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of the Boilermakers. Most summers, Al worked with Vacationland Surveying as a technician. In 2019, he was recognized for his 31 years as a seasonal wildfire technician with the Barnes DNR. After retirement, he worked at the Barnes Transfer Site as an attendant (or ‘dump man’ as Al would say). He will always be remembered for his playful jokes and humor. Early in his life, Al enjoyed playing baseball and hockey. Later on, he won multiple league championships in bowling. Al was an avid Packers, Brewers, and NASCAR fan. Other hobbies included playing cribbage, trivia, and watching old TV shows. Visits with his grandkids brought a smile to Al’s face like no other. Al is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Cathy Jacobson of La Crosse, WI; children, Alayna (Mike) Burger of Superior, WI, Adam (Angela) Jacobson of Durand, WI, and Dusty (Leanne) Jacobson of Fort Atkinson, WI; grandchildren, Taylor and Brooklyn Burger, Cora (Brandon) Carriveau, Eden and Bella Graceffa, Jack Jacobson, Stuart and Tess Jacobson; great-grandchild, Ellie Carriveau; brother, Gary Jacobson; sister, Cheryl Jacobson; sister-in-law, Mary (David) Schultz, and nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Harry and Bonnie, and brother, Terry Jacobson. An initial small service will be held at noon on Sat., Oct. 28, 2023, at the Fireclay Court Center, 4350 Fireclay Ct., La Crosse, WI. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Sat., Nov. 4, 2023, at the Barnes Memorial Cemetery, 2810 Ellison Lake Rd., Barnes, WI, followed by a Celebration of Life at noon at the Barnes VFW, 52325 Lake Rd., Barnes, WI.
