When Barrett Brown had issues with some students sleeping in class, he was faced with two choices: send them to the principal’s office or investigate the core reason. He decided on the latter. And when he did, he discovered that some kids weren’t getting enough sleep because they were tasked with taking care of younger siblings while their parents worked late shifts.
"Do you suspend them or send them to the office every time they are not up in class?” asked Brown, a former teacher who is now Alamance County’s NAACP president. “Being aware of what's going on in students' lives sometimes can make a difference with how you deal with disciplinary challenges.”
