Air Force squadron leader acquitted of assault during coronavirus lockdown

Rankin and Thompson met by chance in mid-2019 when they crossed paths in a cafe and a supermarket on the same day.
They exchanged numbers, met socially and quickly developed a close relationship, staying at each other’s homes several nights a week.
They took a break in December 2019, but resumed the relationship in January 2020.
The pair decided to spend at least the first two weeks of the 2020 nationwide coronavirus lockdown together at Thompson’s Palmerston North home.
