A proposal would make the Elijah Iles House and the yet-to-be constructed Lincoln's Springfield Cottage part of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site by asking the National Park Service to extend the historic site boundaries.
The cottage, a vision of what the home of Abraham Lincoln and his family was before its expansion, is slated to be built on what is now a former parking lot at 617 S. Eighth St.
The Elijah Iles House at 628 South Seventh Street is the oldest surviving house in Springfield and sits a block from where it was originally built. Iles was the city's first merchant, opening his store 200 years ago this June.
