DAYTON, OHIO (WDTN) -- Most fiancés give each other flowers, heart-felt notes, or treats to show their love, but one woman gave her soon to be husband the gift of life. Alex and Jack Sperry got married in 2020, but their story starts much earlier than that. "We actually went to high school together, and I graduated from Central High School in 1981, and my wife, Alex, graduated in 1982." Jack said. "I was on the football team. She was on the drill team, the CO EDS and so I knew who she was. " A few decades later, they found each other. "Years later, I was married, I had two kids, she was married, had two kids, and we both ended up getting divorced," Jack said. "Then we reconnected on Facebook while she was living in Maryland." They were in a long-distance relationship, and Jack had something he felt was important to share. "I did tell Alex when we started going out that I have this I was diagnosed with a kidney disease," Jack said. Jack is the owner of the Hamburger Wagon and said the name of this disease is ironic. "It's called Buerger's disease, as I'm in the hamburger business, ironically enough" Jack said. "It is a real slow-moving sclerosis of the entire kidney organ, not just the right or the left." As his disease progressed, Jack's doctor told him he either needed to start dialysis or get a transplant. He was added to the donor lists at the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State University. However, Jack said being on these lists didn't automatically find him a donor. "There's a lot of things that go into having to be a proper match and it's not just blood type, there's a lot of different factors," Jack said. Doctors suggested he ask others to see if they would test to be his donor. Yet, even his family members were not a match. "I have two older brothers, and they both were tested, and were not deemed match a match," Jack said. "My older brother put out kind of a big ask on Facebook and said my brother needs a hero." Turns out his hero was much closer than he thought. Alex, his fiancé at the time, decided to get tested to see if she'd be a match. "People think this was a pretty selfless thing, and I had an ulterior motive," Alex said. "I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him." They were engaged at the time, and it turns out Alex and Jack were a match in more ways than one. "I was actually getting my hair cut, and I answered the phone, and she says, you're a match," Alex said. "I was pretty overwhelmed, just with relief, knowing that we can move forward with this." Despite the daunting procedure, Alex said she was not afraid, because she felt as though it was what she was meant to do. "They said, what if you go through all of this, and it fails?" Alex said. "And I just answered, well, it's not going to, I just know that. You know? I mean, again, I think it's a God thing." The procedure was a success, and now, years later, the couple said this is just a small portion of their story. "We forget about it all the time," Alex said. "You know, we got him healthy, we got married, and moved on with our lives.  They said for those looking for an organ donor, and those looking for love: don't give up hope.
