A federal judge has blocked a new Texas law that drag artists fear will be used to shut them down or put them in jail. U.S. District Judge David Hittner in Houston issued the temporary restraining order on Thursday. A group of drag performers and LGBTQ+ rights advocates sued to keep the law from taking effect on Friday, saying it violates their First Amendment rights. The Texas Attorney General's Office says it will “aggressively defend” the law. Critics say the law's expansion of what is considered an illegal performance of sexual conduct in front of children is so broad that it could criminalize the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.
