TALLAHASSEE --  A pair of FSU quarterbacks, a two-time women’s soccer player of the year and the unanimous 2021 men’s collegiate golfer of the year highlight 70 Florida State student-athletes spread over all 20 sports who will receive degrees during spring commencement exercises this weekend in Tallahassee. Current Seminole quarterback Jordan Travis and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner and New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston will receive bachelor’s degrees during the Saturday morning ceremony.  Back-to-back Mac Hermann trophy winner Jaelin Howell is already playing professionally and cannot attend the ceremony, but last year’s Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins Award winner John Pak is taking a break from the professional tour to march. “Our student-athletes have the goal of obtaining their degree set in front of them from the moment they are recruited.  It is an absolute priority for us,” said Florida State Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford. “I’ve said it before, but we want them walking across that stage with a diploma in one hand and a ring on the other.  Of all the opportunities that intercollegiate athletics offers, education is the most valuable part of being a student-athlete.” Travis will return for his junior season in 2022 after starting eight games last year and throwing for 1,500 yards and rushing for 530.  The only quarterback in FSU history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a career, Travis threw 15 touchdown passes and scored seven on the ground. Winston led the Seminoles to a perfect 14-0 record and the 2013 National Championship as a redshirt freshman.  Over his two-year career, he passed for 7,964 yards (third in FSU history) and 65 touchdowns (second in FSU history), while compiling a 26-1 record. His career pass efficiency mark (163.28) ranked as the 10th-best in college football history and is the FSU and ACC record holder. Howell also led her team to the NCAA Championship as FSU won the 2021 College Cup after losing the title the previous season by penalty kicks. Florida State’s student-athletes are having an outstanding year academically as they have already won 60 individual academic awards including the ACC Scholar Athletes of the Year in women’s soccer, men’s cross country, men’s indoor track & field, and beach volleyball.
