The 51 annual Upstate South Carolina Boat Show ends Sunday at the Greenville Convention Center. Like many events over the last year, the show looks slightly different this year.The show features almost 500 different kinds of boats and watercraft and other boat accessories. This year, there will also be COVID-19 safety precautions in place. “As soon as you walk in the door, you’ll see signage trying to separate people,” Greenville Convention Center general manager John Wilusz said. “You’ll see hand sanitizers. You’ll see sneeze guards.”The convention center is also operating under a 50% capacity limit. Masks are also required on the show floor.“That will allow us about 5,000 people in this hall,” Wilusz said. “We have the advantage of having space. Our total exhibit space for the show is about 230,000 square feet, so people can easily social distance.”Wilusz says they don’t expect to reach anywhere near that capacity limit though. He also says the overall experience will be almost exactly the same as it is every year.Boat dealers are happy to be back this year after what they call an explosive year for boat sales.“It blew up,” Christian Joyce, with Palmetto Boat Center, said. “We saw about a 25% growth last year, which is fantastic for us.”Palmetto Boat Center is one of a number of local vendors participating in the show. Joyce says they saw boat sales skyrocket last spring and summer.At the show, he said they are trying to keep people distanced on and off the boats.“We’re making sure we’re wearing masks —making sure we try to stay apart from everybody," Joyce said. "Maybe one family per boat or things like that. Maybe not as much touching of the boats.”Despite the rules of COVID-19, event organizers still expect a large turnout. Wilusz said they’ve just started to get back into hosting events regularly.“We’re excited about just being able to have it,” Wilusz said. “We’re not concerned about if numbers are down 20% or not. It’s just a big win.”The event runs Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
