Jacinda Ardern and Australian counterpart Scott Morrison debate a "corrosive" deportation policy in Sydney in February 2020.
It is 2am, and FIlipa Payne receives a phone call.
The man on the other end of the line is in Australia's notorious Christmas Island detention centre, awaiting deportation to New Zealand.
He is calling to tell her the person in the cell next to him has sewn his mouth shut as part of a hunger strike in a prison that has been described as hell on earth for those detained there.
The man feels he cannot share the fact with his family, so he turns to Payne.
