Following up her JUNO Award-winning sophomore album Stay Tuned!, Montreal singer-songwriter Dominique Fils-Aimé dives even deeper into the classic soul, jazz and blues that serve as her primary muse. Taking those influences into the future produces a contemporary groove that is along the lines of similarly powerful and inspired composers such as Laura Mvula and others.
Each of her records has delved into the roots of African-American music and culture, with Three Little Words winding up the trilogy.
If her debut looked at history and sorrow and Stay Tuned! the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, she is aiming for where the personal and the political meet in individuals with this release. As the promotional material notes, she feels “that we are living in an era where people don’t wish to be burdened by extra emotional weight, where there are only good vibes allowed. We should be accepting of everyone — depression, patriarchy and racism exists and we should not pretend that we live in a fictitious gated community where everyone walks around with a dog and a smile.”
