5.9 Earthquake Shakes Wide Area of California

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake rattled a wide swath of of California late Thursday afternoon, bringing reports of shaking buildings and rockslides that closed at least one highway.
"While there are no preliminary reports of damage or injuries, this is a rapidly evolving situation & more details will emerge in the coming hours," the state's Office of Emergency Services said in a tweet at about 4:15 p.m. PDT.
The earthquake centered was centered south of Lake Tahoe on the state line near Smith Valley, Nevada, according to the U.S. Geological Service.
