HISTORY, being the sort of discipline that it is, means that every new year brings with it new anniversaries.
Given its age, that is particularly true of Maldon. With a documented story dating right back to the 10th Century (and archaeological evidence of a settlement that is even earlier than that), it has evolved over time and, in the words of one author, has “gained light, life and colour” in the process.
Fixed dates (dates that many of us had drummed into us at school) are attached to key local events, surviving buildings and important people.
As we enter 2021 there are some special milestones for us to mark. Foremost among these has to be the 1,030th anniversary of the town’s most famous event of all – the battle of 991.
