The announcement came after workers in a chicken farm in Chiba found around 220 chickens dead last Wednesday, to which they reported immediately to local government officials.
In response, Chiba Governor Kensaku Morita has asked the nation’s Defense Ministry to assist in culling 1.16 million chickens and burying them in Izumi, 80 kilometres south-east of Tokyo.
This incident marks the 32nd outbreak of avian influenza this season, with the government culling more than 4.6 million chickens in total.
