Local Bugatti sale third best in 2020
Money makes the world go around, and exactly $7.1 million made a very special Bugatti go round the Bonham's auction block during its March 5 sale near the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance to become the third most expensive classic auctioned worldwide in 2020.
The top 10 auction sales for 2020 are listed in Hagerty's wrap-up as they routinely keep tabs on the auto auction markets, French-made Bugattis of the '20s and '30s making up much of the field of dreams.
The most expensive was a 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports at the Gooding & Company “Passion of a Lifetime” auction on Sept. 5, for $12.66 million. King Leopold III of Belgium was one of its five owners. Third place is the Amelia sale, a 1932 Bugatti Type 55 Super Sport, one of just 14 to leave the Molsheim factory with Jean Bugatti’s roadster body. It has its original engine and chassis, and was also the most expensive car sold in Amelia Island this year.
