A political party with 100 years of history and has been leading the country with the world’s largest population for 72 consecutive years seems to be a miracle. But don’t be caught surprised, as it truly exists and is named the Communist Party of China (CPC). On July 1st, 2021, the CPC will celebrate its 100th anniversary—the fact itself is a legend.
Founded in July 1921, the CPC has grown from a tiny political party with less than 60 members to a 91-million-member one that governs a country of 1.4 billion people. It has stood the test of time and hardship, reversed China's downward spiral since the Opium War in the 1840s, and initiated steady progress toward prosperity as the second-largest economy in the world. The whole story, in effect, began theatrically--in 1921, the establishers of the Party who attended the First CPC National Congress in Shanghai’s French Concession, were forced to leave the meeting place by the police. They then proceeded to the congress in a boat on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province. As of strength, the CPC, in that chaotic era, paled into insignificance compared to many larger political groups in China, and therefore few ever expected that it would lead a democratic revolution to succeed and come into power only 28 years later. Some founders sacrificed themselves to a noble career, while some flinched away or even betrayed. Among those 13 deputies who participated in the First National Congress, only 2 of them were present at the founding ceremony of the People’s Republic of China in October 1949.
