Μόλις 15 χιλιόμετρα από το Ηράκλειο στο ιστορικό χωριό Κρουσώνα βρίσκεται το μουσείο ελληνικής παραδοσιακής μουσικής, μουσικών οργάνων, έρευνας και τεκμηρίωσης με το χαρακτηριστικό όνομα «ΘΥΡΑΘΕΝ»* θύραθεν παιδεία = η κλασική παιδεία (στο βυζάντιο η παιδεία που είχε κοσμικό χαρακτήρα).
Σε ένα ανακαινισμένο παραδοσιακό σπίτι, στο σημείο όπου οι ήχοι της φύσης γονιμοποιούν τα παραδοσιακά όργανα και γεννούν αενάως αξεπέραστες μελωδίες, επιφυλάσσεται στον επισκέπτη ένα ταξίδι στη γοητεία της μουσικής.

Η συλλογή των μουσικών οργάνων πραγματοποιήθηκε με την χρηματοδότηση απο τον ΑΚΟΜΜ και ταξινομούνται σύμφωνα με το σύστημα E VON HORUBASTEL – S.
SAHS με κριτήριο τους παραγόμενους ήχους απο τις αντίστοιχες παλμικές κινήσεις των υλικών σε αερόφωνα , χορδόφωνα, μεμβρανόφωνα και ιδιόφωνα.
