Detailed description is . Üsküdar, İstanbul'un Anadolu Yakası'nın bir ilçesidir. Üsküdar İlçesi, kuzeyden Beykoz, kuzeydoğudan Ümraniye, doğudan Ataşehir, güneyden Kadıköy ilçeleri ve batıdan İstanbul Boğazıyla çevrilidir.33 mahalleden oluşan Üsküdar İlçesinin nüfusu, 2014 ADNKS verilerine göre 534.970 kişi olarak tespit edilmiştir. 1926 yılına kadar il statüsünde olan Üsküdar aynı yıl yapılan yasal düzenlemeyle ilçe statüsüne getirilip İstanbul'a bağlanmıştır. 1930'da Kadıköy ve Beykoz'un, 1987'de Ümraniye'nin Üsküdar'dan ayrılarak ilçe olmaları, 2008'de de Örnek, Esatpaşa ve Fetih mahallelerinin Ataşehir ilçesine bağlanmasıyla bugünkü sınırlarına ulaşmıştır.Köken bilimiYerleşimin Antik Çağ'daki ilk adı Khyrsopolis olup Yunanca 'Altın şehir' anlamına gelmekteydi. Üsküdar adının, Roma döneminin Roma ordusunun zırhlı süvari birliklerden olan Scutarii ve buradaki Skutarion Kışlası'ndan geldiği düşüncesi yaygındır. Özhan Öztürk Latince “zırhlı süvari” anlamına gelen Scutarii kelimesi ile Antik Çağ’da bozkırların atlı savaşçıları olarak anınan İskitlerin kendilerine verdikleri “okçular” anlamındaki skudat ismi arasındaki benzerliğe dikka çekmiştir. Bizanslılarca Hrisopolis (Altınşehir) olarak adlandırılan Üsküdar, 12. yy'dan itibaren Skutarion olarak tanınmaya başlamıştır. IV. Haçlı Seferi ile İstanbul'a gelen Geoffroy de Villehardouin, Histoire de la conquête de Constantinople (İstanbul'un Zaptının Tarihi) adlı kitabında bu semt için “Escutaire” sözcüğünü kullanmış ve bu sözcük Fransızca kaynaklarda sık sık tekrarlanmıştır. Skutarion ismi zamanla Üsküdar'a dönüşmüştür.
