Zeugma, MÖ 300 civarında Büyük İskender'in generallerinden Selevkos I Nikator tarafından kurulmuş bir antik şehirdir.Bugün, Gaziantep ilinin Nizip ilçesine 10 km uzaklıktaki Belkıs mahallesi eteklerindedir. İlk olarak kurucusu adına Fırat'da Selevkosya anlamına gelen "Selevkaya Euphrates" olarak anılan şehir Roma İmparatorluğu tarafından ele geçtikten sonra köprü anlamına gelen "Zeugma" ismiyle anılmaya başlandı. Antioch (Antakya) Çin arasında Fırat yoluyla oluşan geçitte liman olarak büyük bir ticari değer kazandı.Yapılan kazı çalışmalarında A, B ve C olarak üç bölümde incelenen şehrin villaları ve çarşılarının bulunduğu A ve B bölümleri bugün Birecik Hidroelektrik Baraj gölü altında bulunmaktadır. Henüz kazı yapılmamış C bölümünde ileride bir açık hava müzesi oluşturulması planlanmaktadır. Antik şehir, Roma döneminden kalan mozaikleri ile dünyaca ünlüdür.Zeugma kazılarından çıkarılan mozaikler bir süre Gaziantep Arkeoloji Müzesinde sergilendikten sonra, 2011 yılında Zeugma Mozaik Müzesine taşınmışlardır.Zeugma'nın kronolojik tarihçesi MÖ 300 - Büyük İskender'in Generallerinden Selevkos I Nikator Belkıs/Zeugma’nın ilk yerleşimi olan Selevkeya Euphrates kentini kurar MÖ 1. yüzyıl - Kentin Selevkaya Euphrates adı korunarak Kommagene Krallığı'’ın 4 büyük kentinden biri olur. 1. yüzyıl - 1. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde Roma İmparatorluğu’nun topraklarına katılır ve ismi de “köprü “, “geçit” anlamına gelen "Zeugma" olarak değiştirilir. 252 - Sasani Kralı I. Şapur Belkıs/Zeugma’yı ele geçirerek yakıp yıkar 4. yüzyıl - Belkıs/Zeugma geç Roma hakimiyetine girer. 5-6. yüzyıl - Belkıs/Zeugma Erken Roma hakimiyetine girer. 7. yüzyıl - İslam Akınları sonucu Belkıs/Zeugma terk edilir. 10-12. yüzyıl - Küçük bir İslami yerleşimi oluşur. 16. yüzyıl - Bugünkü adıyla Belkıs Köyü kurulur.
