Detailed description is Working Dingoes Saving Wildlife (WDSW) is a not for profit conservation program which is managed by Aus Eco Solutions and the Australian Dingo Foundation Australia is home to a stunning array of animals, many of which are found nowhere else in the world, however we are facing the imminent loss of many of these unique species. Australia has the unenviable record of having the worst mammal extinction rate in the world, with 30 native mammal species lost forever since European colonization and many more at risk of extinction.. . The loss of these species and the ongoing threat to many more is attributed to feral animals, changes in fire regimes, clearing of native vegetation and weed species invading native ecosystems. The role of feral animals has come under the spotlight recently; in 2015 the Federal Government declared ‘war’ on feral cats, committing $7 million to eradicate two million feral cats by 2020 and a recently released study found that long-term feral rabbit control is an important factor in the success of the recovery of small native mammals.. . The dingo, Canis dingo, is an iconic Australian animal. On mainland Australia, although it is only 15-25kg, it is the largest land-based predator and as such, is at the top of ecosystem processes (an apex predator). Recently, around the world interest has grown in the role that apex predators play in regulating the ecosystems they inhabit. This has led to calls for ‘re-wilding’ programs, where native predators are reintroduced to areas from which they had been eradicated to restore balance to the ecosystem.. . A number of studies have indicated that dingoes may play a role in maintaining biodiversity by preying on herbivores such as kangaroos, feral goats and feral rabbits. By reducing grazing pressure, dingoes contribute to the growth and biodiversity of plant cover, the home of many small mammals and lizards. Additionally, dingoes may help suppress feral animals, such as feral cats who will actively avoid dingoes and animals such as feral goats, by direct predation. Dingoes themselves are listed as ‘Vulnerable’ by the IUCN and therefore, require conservation. . . One of the more controversial means of controlling feral animal populations is the use of the poison 1080. 1080 is highly toxic to mammals and is currently only used by 5 countries, including Australia. 1080 has been used widely in Australia, including being dropped from the air in large area aerial baiting schemes. However, there are significant concerns about the use of 1080, including causing suffering to the poisoned animal and the poisoning of non-target species and pets.. . Aus Eco Solutions is a Victorian-based environmental consulting firm, which prides itself on ecosystem restoration and using methods that effectively control non-native plant and animal species while minimizing the impact on the environment. Aus Eco Solutions have the responsibility of managing Eynesbury Woodland, a 288 hectare reserve which includes the endangered ecological Grey Box community and is home to a number of endangered birds.. . In 2015 Shakira Todd, a zoologist with AusEco Solutions proposed an innovative and unique approach, using dingoes, to improve the biodiversity of Eynesbury Woodlands, control non-native species and avoid the use of 1080. Shakira approached the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre, a world-leader in dingo conservation, breeding and research. Lyn Watson, the founder readily agreed to support the project and has been instrumental in its development. This partnership is an Australian first and represents an exciting new way forward in collaborative approaches to conservation issues.. . Dingoes were historically present in the Eynesbury area, but were eliminated after European settlement. Shakira proposed that dingoes be reintroduced to this area to take up their role as natural ecosystem regulators. This release will be done in a highly regulated and monitored manner to ensure the dingoes remain within a securely fenced reserve and their influence on the ecosystem can be recorded.. . Our pilot program proposal (pending approval): . The dingoes, a breeding pair named Austin and Aalya, are to be housed in a 10 hectare fenced reserve within the woodland. Austin and Aalya will be free to roam their reserve during the day and will be kept in a smaller enclosure at night. During the day it is expected that dingoes will do their ‘work’ by performing their natural behaviours such as preying on feral rabbits and inducing avoidance behaviour in feral cats and foxes. . . Based on what is known of dingo behaviour and the influence that dingoes can have on an ecosystem, the following outcomes are expected;. . • Reduction in the number of grazing animals, particularly rabbits, allowing native vegetation to reestablish;. • Reduction in the predation of native mammals by feral cats and foxes, with a view to reintroduction of native mammals such as quolls once cat and fox numbers and predation are sufficiently controlled;. • Provision of valuable information on the effect of dingoes in a closed and well monitored ecosystem;. • A tested methodology for using dingoes as a natural and sustainable pest management and ecological restoration tool and a viable alternative to other less desirable methods such as baiting;. • A pathway for education about the role of predators in ecosystems and the need to maintain predators to facilitate sustainable ecological balance and maintenance.. .
