Wheelock Academy started as a mission station established by the Reverend Alfred Wright and his wife, Harriet. Upon arriving in October 1832 at the log cabin built for him by Choctaw friends, Rev. Wright named the mission Wheelock in honor of his friend and mentor, Dr. Eleazer Wheelock. From this mission station, a church and small school was founded. The school would grow to become influential in many lives of young Choctaw and other Native women and their families.. . The school has changed many hands from its early beginnings in 1832. First operated by the American Board Missionaries, students were provided both a Christian and secular education that was more geared to making these young ladies into capable wives, mothers and managers of households.. . The school was expanded in 1842 when the Choctaw General Council enacted legislation creating their own national school system. With this support from the Council, needed buildings were added including a dormitory, school building and kitchen. Known as Wheelock Seminary at the time, it would close at the beginning of the Civil War. Not long after the war, several of the buildings including the dormitory would catch fire leaving but two buildings to stand watch until funds for a new boarding school were appropriated in 1883. The site selected was near where the old Wheelock mission buildings had stood. The new school opened in 1884 with a two-story dormitory, a schoolhouse, storehouse and laundry. The dormitory, named Pushmataha Hall still remains the most prominent and recognizable feature of what would later become Wheelock Academy.. . The Choctaw General Council took full control of the Wheelock Female Orphanage in 1894. The curriculum had changed very little from the school's inception and because these students were being prepared to live within the dominant white population, their native language was forbidden. Those that were caught speaking their language were subject to punishment.. . In 1898, Choctaw schools were placed under the control of the Secretary of the Interior. One hundred and ninety acres of land was allocated by the Choctaw General Council for use by Wheelock. There was a hay meadow that comprised 120 acres and 60 acres was farm and pasture land including orchards and gardens. The remaining ten acres were occupied by buildings. A 1904 survey of Wheelock reports that in addition to the two-story wooden structure used as the dormitory, kitchen and dining room, there were four other small buildings on campus, the laundry, storeroom, school and barn. In later years, a bath house was built as well as an addition to the dormitory and a new school building to accommodate a larger student population.. . The federal government assumed full control of the school including the financial responsibility in 1932. It became a school that was open to young girls of all tribes. The education remained much the same with a strong focus on academics and vocational training. Students were able to take classes in or participate in music, arts and crafts, sports and home economics. Because of numerous eidemics and other concerns for the students’ health, measures were taken to improve these conditions including constructing a separate clinic building, keeping a physician on staff and using immunization techniques.. . In 1955, Wheelock Academy was closed by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. There were 75 students enrolled at the time and many of those students transferred to Jones Academy near McAlester. Eighteen structures still existed on the 10 acre campus, adjoining an additional 35 acres. The title was eventually returned to the Choctaw Nation when a buyer for the property could not be found.. . When the Choctaw Nation took over the property, many of the buildings were in disrepair. Only 15 recognizable structures existed and 11 were deemed to be beyond repair. A feasibility study was conducted on Pushmataha Hall as it is the symbol of Wheelock Academy to many. The study indicated that there was very little hope of restoring the structure although there were measures taken to protect the roof and stabilize the foundation. Only 4 of the remaining buildings on campus were identified as being salvageable. These buildings were restored. There has been a revived interest in what could be done for Pushmataha Hall. The site was recently visited by architects and engineers to see if it can be potentially restored (at a minimum) to a level that guests can visit inside the building safely. The staff is now waiting to hear the results.. . One of the restored buildings is LeFlore Hall. This former teachers’ dormitory, currently houses the Wheelock Museum and Gift Shop where guests can see numerous artifacts, pictures and stories of the campus and area. They can also visit the campus itself following the self-guided walking tour, reading about Wheelock and imagining the life of a young native girl attending school here. Facility staff is always happy to meet and talk with guests about the Academy. Each member on staff at the museum has had a family member or two attend Wheelock Academy and they have a vested interest in telling its story and preserving it. We hope to see you soon!!. . .
