W2C began in September 2009 by recruiting families from Lake County United member organizations. W2C served 25 students and their families in 2009-10 and grew to 33 students for the 2010-11 school year. Had 50 students for the 2011-2012 school year and has reached its maximum capacity of 60 students with a wait list for the 2012-2013 year.. . In the pilot year of W2C:. - 5 of 5 graduating seniors went to college . - 12 college visits and applications were completed, four 4-year college acceptances, one $17,000 scholarship was awarded to a W2C student. - 7 of 25 students were promoted to more challenging courses within Waukegan Public Schools. - 19 students enrolled in additional college readiness programming, including summer college programs. . Unique aspects of W2C:. - Holistic approach, focusing on families, not just students. - Intensive and personal programming--individual family counseling, one-on-one tutoring, student-coach relationships. - Advocacy for each student winthin the Waukegan Public School system to ensure that each student is enrolled in the most challenging courses according to his/her abilities. - Advisory Board with a collective total of more than 100 years of college counseling experience, advises W2C students and works with W2C staff to develop workshops. - High participation rates using a relationship-based approach--member families, and volunteers recruited through one-on-one relationships fostered in Lake County United organizations. - Taps into a county-wide desire to help by recruiting a corps of over 90 hands-on volunteers
