In the early stages of his famed carving career, Mooney could not find a store-bought knife to hold its edge while carving dense materials. So, at the age of 17, with knowledge from working in a local steel mill, he began forging his own carving knives, with great success. That led to his mother asking him to make a kitchen knife of similar quality, which he presented to her on Mother’s Day in 1902.
