In 1998 we moved from the Hunter Valley, NSW to Mission Beach area in Far North Queensland. We bought house built in the middle if a natural rainforest block; actually the day it became legally ours cyclone Rona was heading right for us and although it swerved off to Cape Tribulation at the last minute we still had trees down and the house was plastered with leaves.. We moved in, cleaned the roof and outside walls of leaf debris and as we were changing the lock on the back door there was a crunch on the gravel behind us and when we turned around we saw our very first cassowary. From that very first moment we fell in love with the resident big birds watching over everything we did in the rainforest garden. .
