Detailed description is The Virginia College Advising Corps places recent UVA graduates in high schools throughout Virginia to assist underserved students with college applications, financial aid, and making the transition to post-secondary education. The University of Virginia launched the Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC) in the fall of 2005 to address the widening gap in college access for low income, first generation, and under-represented students. It is the founding program and model for the College Advising Corps, a national college access non-profit now present in 14 states and growing. . . VCAC is a public service program designed to increase the number of students entering and completing higher education in the Commonwealth. The Corps places recent U.Va. graduates in high schools throughout Virginia to work alongside counselors and other college access organizations. These near-peer College Advisers assist high school students and their families with college searches, essay writing, SAT/ACT prep, college applications, FAFSA completion, scholarship searches, college visits, and successfully transitioning to post-secondary education. . . College Advisers serve full-time in their placement sites for two years. They become mentors within the school setting, and are often the key person providing encouragement for students to persist in their education beyond high-school. Currently, 13 Advisers serve in 16 partner high schools. Since 2005, our Advisers have done the following:. . • 120,475 one-on-one appointments with students . • 15,856 classroom visits and workshops . • 9,175 meetings with parents . • 3,355 campus tours . • 7,503 assisted on SAT preparation . • 7,437 FAFSAs completed . • Over 10,000 students enrolled in post-secondary institutions.
