De Vereniging Basisinkomen werd in 1991 opgericht als een onafhankelijke vereniging. Zij is de opvolger van de in 1987 opgerichte Werkplaats Basisinkomen, die was verbonden aan de toenmalige Voedingsbond FNV. De Vereniging Basisinkomen is een onafhankelijke organisatie en de leden behoren tot de diverse politieke en levensbeschouwelijke gezindten die Nederland rijk is. De vereniging maakt deel uit van het Basic Income European Network (BIEN), een internationaal platform van organisaties en wetenschappers die zich bezig houden met het basisinkomen. Om de twee jaar houdt BIEN een internationaal congres dat telkens op grote belangstelling kan rekenen. De Vereniging Basisinkomen is tevens aangesloten bij Keer het Tij. De vereniging beschikt niet over een eigen kantoor en heeft geen personeel in dienst.. . Het doel van de Vereniging Basisinkomen is de invoering van een onvoorwaardelijk minimum-inkomen voor iedere ingezetene van Nederland. Dit inkomen moet hoog genoeg zijn om van te kunnen leven.
