Detailed description is Located approximately 37 miles from Cody, WY along the upper South Fork road Valley is a unique, one-classroom school dedicated to its students! Surrounded by the Absaroka Mountains Valley rests on approximately 5 acres of land leased from the United States Forest Service. Valley School was constructed in the summer of 1918, with the exception of a floor. A box lunch social was held to raise the necessary funds to install one. According to one account of the occasion, a stunningly beautiful woman can be thanked for attracting several cowboys to the event. When it came time to auction her lunch the bids skyrocketed and the $50.00 needed to build the school floor was raised in no time. This original maple floor is still polished each year before the school year begins.. Additions to Valley continued as the years went by, and three years later side rooms were added to the main classroom area. Heat for the school was provided by a coal stove located in a corner of the room, where our present-day library shelves are located. Coal was stored in a smaller, adjacent room and water for the school was carried 100 yards from the Shoshone River. A horse barn was also built to accommodate students' horses. Some students rode up to eight miles one way in order to attend Valley School! The original horse barn was later destroyed in a flood and replaced by a small, four-stall structure. Valley Middle School students remodeled this structure in 1997 and today the building serves as a handy storage facility.. Valley School continued serving South Fork students until the fall of 1978 when the school was closed due to the fact that all attending students had moved away. Thankfully, the school reopened in the fall of 1982 for two kindergarten students. Valley Middle School was opened to four students in 1996 and remained in place until the end of the 2000-2001 school year. Since, Valley has remained strictly a K-5 elementary school. . Presently, Valley School continues to be a proud addition to the Upper South Fork community as well as a unique member of the school district. Six students (four kindergarteners, one second-grader and one fourth-grader) make up the current Valley school student population along with their Teacher, Leah Andren, Para-Professional, Malia Dimler and the school pet and guardian, Annie. Students still arrive on horse every now and then in addition to tractor, four-wheeler, vehicle and bus. Hunting jackets are worn at recess during hunting season for the safety of our students and, in addition to fire drills, bear drills are practiced in the event that the school has any surprise visitors! . Following district standards Valley uses a blend of technology, Quantum learning, and traditional teaching methods to provide students with a quality, one-on-one education. Fundraising efforts continue as additional needs within the school are made known. The school playground is an ongoing project with funds being met via grants, chuck-wagons and raffles in order to obtain equipment, and efforts continue to be made in the hopes of completely revamping the playground's appearance. . Proof that education is never too far to be reached, Valley is an example of academic excellence. As recited each morning with our Valley School Pledge: "Today is a new day. I will act in a safe and healthy way. I will respect the rights of others. I will treat all property with respect. I will take responsibility for my own learning. Today I will be the BEST me I can be! Be safe, be respectful, be responsible!". . *The above information was obtained from a research project completed by Mike Denning's students in 1995 with comments and additional information added by Pamela Jackson.
