Detailed description is A group of researchers from the University of Texas San Antonio who study issues affecting military personnel in non-combat settings. The Military Workplace Research Group is a group of scholars headquartered in the Psychology department at UTSA. It consists primarily of department faculty and graduate students in the department's doctoral program. The goal of the group is to better understand how individual differences and workplace experiences impact the behavior and well-being of military personnel, both on and off duty. Our hope is that this will help policy makers in their efforts to find ways to reduce or eliminate potentially destructive behaviors and health problems sometimes associated with military life, which in turn would help improve the health and productivity of current military personnel and future veterans.. . Our group designs and conducts research drawing on theory and findings from a range of areas of psychology. Although we draw most heavily from areas of Social Psychology, Organizational Psychology, and Health Psychology, we incorporate theory and findings from other areas as well. Given that many of the current theories in these areas were developed in and for civilian populations, some may not be applicable to the military workplace. However, several recent articles on active and former military personnel suggest that there may be more similarity between the military and civilian workplaces than is commonly thought. We make use of this research and theories developed in civilian samples to help us narrow the search for variables to assess in our research on military samples.
