Since 1993, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has been a strong educational partner for Laredo and surrounding communities. A number of educational programs were initiated with the establishment of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in 1993. Programs designed to attract students into careers within the health professions as well as programs designed to improve the quality of health care in the community and educate the community about healthy living began with the AHEC and continued after the establishment of the Health Science Center at Laredo Regional Campus in 2002.
