A Universidade Federal de Alagoas – maior instituição pública de ensino superior do Estado – foi criada em 25 de janeiro de 1961, por ato do então presidente Juscelino Kubitscheck, reunindo as Faculdades de Direito (1933), Medicina (1951), Filosofia (1952), Economia (1954), Engenharia (1955) e Odontologia (1957).
Atualmente, está instalada no Campus A.C.
Simões, em Maceió, e em mais dois campi no interior do Estado: Campus Arapiraca (com unidades em Viçosa, Penedo e Palmeira dos Índios) e Campus do Sertão (em Delmiro Gouveia e unidade em Santana do Ipanema)..

Com mais de 25 mil alunos matriculados em cursos de graduação, a Ufal divide-se em 23 Unidades Acadêmicas, sendo 21 no Campus A.
