The Village Movement began in the Boston area in the late 1990s in response to an identified need for support for older citizens who wanted to remain active in their communities but had some difficulties that might otherwise have driven them to consider moving away from the homes they loved.. . Since that time, "villages" have been developed in communities across the country and a Village is being developed in Union County.. . Interest in a Union County Village program is growing. Leadership Marysville, of the Union County Chamber of Commerce selected the Village as a project they could support. They developed a Community Needs Survey – targeting persons over the age of 50. Those completing the survey received a $2 bill in appreciation of their time. Results of the initial survey were shared with the Chamber of Commerce and interested stakeholders on May 7th. More than 200 surveys were returned with clear interest in access to vetted service providers, volunteer services, as well as organized social opportunities.. . Funded by an initial grant by Interim HealthCare, the Union County Neighbor to Neighbor idea is registered as a "Village under development" on the National Village to Village Website. Union County Representatives attended the Mid-West Village Symposium in Lansing Michigan in April to connect with other Mid-West Villages.
