İstanbul'daki ilköğreniminden sonra, Konya Askeri Okulu, Bursa Işıklar Askeri Lisesi ve Askeri Memurlar okulunu bitirip Posof, Terme ve Ankara'da personel subayı olarak görev yaptı. 1958'de askerlikten ayrılarak Türkiye Selüloz ve Kâğıt Sanayii'nin Ankara şubesinde çalışmaya başladı. Tütünler Islak (1962) ve Her Pazartesi'de (1968) koruduğu bu çizgiyi, Divan'la (1970) geleneksel şiirin kalıplarına, Toplandılar (1974) ve Kayayı Delen İncir'le (1982) söz konusu dönemde yaşanan sınıfsal mücadelenin yansımalarına açtı.
