Your first true experience as a college student, wherever you go, will be freshman orientation. Upon reaching campus, there will be an orientation for registration, an orientation for college life—clubs, meal plans, etc.—and perhaps, an orientation introducing you to academic resources such as the library, but one thing you are not likely to encounter is an orientation for the transition to college writing, which is one of the most important keys to success in higher education.. . After ten years of teaching first-year composition and seeing many freshman college students struggle in their first semester, I want to help high school graduates transition to the demands of college writing prior to stepping foot on campus so they can succeed on day one.. . ���� ���������� ������-�������� ���������������� over three weeks, students will gain a greater understanding of:. . 1. The difference between high school and college writing. 2. The process behind college writing. 3. College writing assignment sheets. 4. Instructor feedback. 5. Writing resources available outside of the college classroom. . ���������� ���� ������ ���������� ��������������, students will send me a writing sample (e.g. a graded essay from their senior year). I will provide feedback that will serve as a guide for the revision process throughout the three-week seminar. . . ������������ ������ ���������� ��������������, students and I will:. . 1. Review their high school teacher’s comments (if available) on the graded essay so as to learn how to improve a piece of writing based on instructor feedback.. . 2. Discuss the differences between writing for a high school class and writing on a college level.. . 3. Brainstorm revisions to be made on a global level (regarding thesis, organization, development, etc.).. . ���������� ���� ������ ������������ ��������������, students will revise their essay according to (1) the high school teacher’s feedback and (2) the global revisions we discussed in the first session.. . ������������ ������ ������������ ��������������, we will:. . 1. Discuss what worked and what did not work in regards to the global revisions and the changes made in response to the teacher’s feedback.. . 2. Brainstorm edits to be made on a local level (regarding sentence structure, grammar, mechanics, formatting, etc.).. . 3. Review sample assignment sheets from a variety of college courses to expose students to the expectations of college writing.. . ���������� ���� ������ ���������� ��������������, students will revise their essay according to the local edits discussed in the second session.. . ������������ ������ ���������� ��������������, we will:. . 1. Reflect on the revision process undertaken during the first two sessions, reviewing what worked and what did not work on a global and local level so that students can become more aware of their individual writing process.. . 2. Discuss resources available outside of the classroom (on campus and online) to help students improve their writing on their own and become more independent writers prepared to succeed in college on day one.. .
