"Transgender" (often abbreviated to “Trans”) is the state of one's gender identity (self-identification as woman, man, neither or both) or gender expression not matching one's assigned sex (identification by others as male, female or intersex based on physical/genetic sex). Transgender is independent of sexual orientation; trans people may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, polysexual, or asexual; some may consider conventional sexual orientation labels inadequate or inapplicable to them. . . Transgender. It's a term that covers a broad spectrum of gender identities and can set off a firestorm of controversy among some people in a society. They might say, "You're not that." Or, “What the hell are you thinking?" In some cases, it may provoke pejoratives like "fag", "queer", “tranny” and other nasty labels.. . Over five years ago, the Transgender Resource Center opened as an organization within the virtual environment of Second Life. We provided a space for transgender people to gather and offer support to and seek support from individuals experiencing the same issues in daily life.. . Trans people often think there is something wrong with them, that they are "broken" because of the way they feel. They have been told and believe that identifying with aspects of the opposite sex is wrong. Society tells them that wearing clothes of the opposite sex is wrong. Many believe they have been in the wrong body since birth and because they feel such intense body dysphoria, there must be something terribly wrong with them. A lot of people simply do not adhere to society’s concepts of “manliness” or “femininity”.. . Second Life became an avenue for support for people who otherwise could not find it. There are no geographical barriers on the internet: people who lived far from urban settings could now attend a weekly support meeting. Or a weekly voice-training group. They could do so almost physically via their Second Life avatar.. . And, let’s face it—in many parts of the world, it’s harder to be trans or gender-questioning than in others. A virtual meeting space can overcome that barrier, too.. . Second Life not only provides a meeting place for trans people around the world: it also presents a unique opportunity for people to express themselves in a way they feel they cannot express themselves in the real world. In a virtual way, they can present as the gender that makes them most comfortable.. . Through the Transgender Resource Center, they can discover they are not alone. That there are people like them all over the world. They can log into the Center at any hour and probably find someone there to talk to or just hang out with.. . You are not alone and you are OK!
