As an independent filmmaker it’s easy to get angry when you see incredibly poor films with budgets running into hundreds of millions of dollars – especially when you’re struggling to fund your own artistic endeavours which in this case cost less than 0.004% of those $200m blockbusters. However, the experience of creating something from next to nothing is character building and motivational, requiring an imaginative resourcefulness and passion that I rarely see emanating from people who are able to throw money at all of their problems.. . Having nothing forces you to focus on what’s important and what’s important is the story. It may sound incredibly simple and obvious, but it’s something that quickly gets forgotten by the big boys in lieu of special effects and explosions which, although fun, should be there to augment the story, not replace it. When I first read the script of The Washing Machine I knew immediately that I wanted to be involved. It was a quirky, original story and that’s something that no amount of cash can buy.. . So here it is. After two years of hard labour, my co-producer Stuart Fletcher and I present The Washing Machine. It’s been a long, bumpy road and we’ve learnt many things along the way. We’ve begged, borrowed, blagged, asked cast and crew to work for free, changed day jobs in order to use the studio and bravely (but carefully) allowed water to pour into a room full of electrical appliances. We know it’s not perfect, but then again, it was never meant to be. Just to have it finished is a massive achievement in itself and I’m extremely proud to have played some small part in it.
