The Life Boat of New Jersey was set up to help young adults and people new to recovery from drug addictions and alcoholism to develop new healthy outlets that are challenging, stimulating and satisfying which helps prevent relapse into addiction. Many people fear getting clean or staying sober because they do not know how to fill their spare time. They think their lives will be boring and uneventful. They crave excitement and adventure but do not know how to get it without using. Many began using drugs or alcohol at a young age and never had the chance to discover who they are or what they like to do. Some never developed any life coping skills or cultivated any enjoyable, healthy and fulfilling hobbies. We have been among them and have found a way out. . The way out is realizing addiction/alcoholism is a 3 fold disease. It affects the body, mind and spirit. In today’s addiction treatment world, most treatment facilities focus on treating the mental illness aspect of addiction due to time and insurance constraints. This method has its merits because the mental illness aspect of addiction is most acute in the beginning of recovery. However, 28 day treatment is only enough time to scratch the surface of the mental illness. We believe treating only the mental aspect does not go far enough. The physical and spiritual maladies must also be treated to prevent relapse. When a client is released from rehab they are still confused. Many times they are overwhelmed. They don’t know how to stay sober and avoid falling back into the same old routines and depressing situations. . At this point in time, as the client is transitioning from the controlled rehab environment to real life, LBNJ can be of significant help to the newly recovering person. We can teach them the ageless art of sailing and many other healthy, fun and fulfilling recreational activities. Activities we offer such as sailing, surfing, paddle-boarding, fishing, crabbing, clamming, swimming, etc.. These activities, much like recovery programs, are simple but not easy. They force the client to be mindful of his environment, focus on the task at hand and to be present in the moment to be successful. These healthy activities help fill their time, open their minds and lead to a sense of accomplishment. In addition, most of these activities do not require any special skills or physical prowess. .
