Detailed description is Our goal is to provide a meditative environment where youth are able to focus on personal development away from the chaos of impoverished living.
The James McDaniel Youth Inspiration Center (TJMYIC) is an invitational retreat whose mission is to provide a place of respite and rejuvenation to youth living in communities of adversity.

Our retreat is held on the grounds of the James McDaniel Botanical Gardens.
It is truly a magical place of serenity, a native Hawaiian forest that encourages the participants to reconnect with nature and the life giving forces of the planet.
The center is located on the southern tip of the Big Island of Hawai’i – an area revered by Polynesian peoples as the “piko” or life center of the earth.

Invitations to participate in the program are extended primarily to African- American youth ages 9 – 16, living in poverty-stricken, crime-ridden areas of the United States.
The youth selected are those who show fortitude, resilience and leadership qualities.
Many of them may already be in the criminal system, but these are the youth who have used their wits and creativity to survive in a hard environment.

The majority of these youth have never travelled outside of their neighborhoods, have never experienced a different life style, never imagined a way out.
This program will literally transport them from their present environment to a totally different place in both location and attitude.
They will be shown a real choice of a positive life style with a program that focuses on meditation and education.

Here, participants are able to shed the armor of survival mode needed to exist in the inner-city environment.
We will help them explore their interests and ambitions and develop realistic action plans towards achieving those goals.

In conjunction with the youth education program, the center will also provide a parallel program for the parents of those selected.
They too will be brought to the Center for respite and meditation and given support in building their own life skills in the area of vocation, education, and financial management.
