Detailed description is Working on restoring The Holly Springs Depot so it can be open to the public as a venue for events. The Original and still present Depot was built in the 1850’s. . . It survived 60 raids during the Civil War. The most famous one was General Van Dorn's Raid in December 1862. The Depot building was not burned down however the raid did burn the Depot supplies. This raid caused General Grant to return with his wife to Holly Springs and prolonged the Civil War.. . It took awhile for Holly Springs to get back on its feet after the war and the Yellow Fever Eidemic of 1878. Once it did, the Illinois Central bought the Depot and made some additions of their own.. . In May 1886, the Depot was reopened as the grand structure you see today. Many famous people stopped by the Depot during this time including President Theodore Roosevelt and William Faulkner. During the 1930's the Depot was shut down and was left in poor condition.. . During the 1940’s the Depot was bought and saved by Mr. Orange Baxter Kerr who was an inventor and businessman. Mr. O.B. Kerr restored the derelict building and converted the first floor into a factory. The second floor of the Depot was renovated and rented out as apartments. . . His descendants continue to reside at the Depot and, with the help of volunteers and Depot Divas (a.k.a. Dixie Divas in the Virginia Brown novels), are working on restoring it. . . We hope to reopen the Depot as a venue for events.
