Detailed description is 終戦の翌年（1946年）4月5日建立 終戦の翌年（1946年）の1月、米軍の命令により旧真和志村（現在の那覇市真和志地区）の人々が糸満市米須に移動させられてきました。当時の真和志村の村長はひめゆり学徒の遺族でもあった金城和信氏でした。真和志村民らは金城氏の呼びかけで遺骨の収集を始め、それらの遺骨を納骨するために2月に「魂魄の塔」を建立しました。戦後初の慰霊の塔でした。.
同年4月5日、真和志村民らは、沖縄戦末期米軍のガス弾攻撃を受け、多くのひめゆり学徒や陸軍病院関係者が亡くなった伊原第三外科壕の上にも「ひめゆりの塔」を建立。建立から2日後の4月7日に第1回慰霊祭がとり行われ、学徒隊の引率教師だった仲宗根政善先生が「いはまくら かたくもあらむ やすらかに ねむれとぞいのる まなびのともは」のうたを霊前に捧げました。9日には摩文仁に男子学徒を祀る「健児の塔」も建立し、魂魄の塔・ひめゆりの塔・健児の塔と合わせて平和を希求する3つの慰霊の塔としました。
