Detailed description is The Helping Hand is a mostly volunteer run thrift store.
The store supports the homeless program governed by the Concerned Citizens for the Homeless.
Organized in May 1990 by a group of local citizens, Concerned citizens for the Rehabilitation of the Homeless, Inc.
(CCH) is an organization with a mission to aid the homeless of Scotland County.
For the past 20 years we have provided housing and rehabilitation for qualified residents.

In 1998, the CCH board opened a thrift store on Main Street in downtown Laurinburg in the former Julia’s Ladies Clothing Store.
Upon her retirement, Mrs.
Julia Joseph generously donated all of her store merchandise including fixtures, hangers, counters, and clothing to CCH.
The board opened The Helping Hand to support the homeless program.
They rented the building, and provided the funds for the necessary store space, and warehouse.

With s dedicated volunteer base and much support from the community that donates all goods for resale, growth in sales at The Helping Hand resulted in the need for more space.
A larger building on Biggs Street, then owned by Thomas Parker, was rented, but after three more years of continued growth, even more space was needed.
CCH bought the building from Mr.
Parker in 2005 and now occupies the entire 9600 square foot building.

The store, which not only supports two homeless residents, also provides very affordable clothing and household items to those in need.
The community supports The Helping Hand graciously with donations to stock the inventory and over 100 volunteers who work tirelessly to prepare the items for sale.
Under the volunteer leadership of Clara and Julian Butler, sales soared and the initial loan was satisfied within 5 years and extensive repairs were made to the building.
The program is now debt free and completely self-sufficient because of the Helping Hand.
As this store continues to grow and thrive, the lives of many people in Scotland County will be touched in a meaningful way.
