Detailed description is Inviting new connections among the people of Bethany through meaningful gatherings, shared resources and neighborly service. Last fall, the new priest at Christ Church invited a small ecumenical team of people together who were interested in taking part in some community leadership training. The training was sponsored by the Episcopal Church in CT and the Boston based Leadership Development Initiative. With members of both Christ Church and First Church, as well as another Bethany resident who is a clergy person, the team began doing one on one conversations all over town, asking community leaders and residents to share on this question: “What breaks your heart in our community?” . . . The team heard a variety of stories, but all were linked by one common denominator - isolation. Isolation is an increasing societal problem, but there were specific ways people were being impacted here in Bethany. People’s busy calendars keep them from getting involved in community activities. People don’t feel they have gotten a chance to get to know their neighbors. People don’t hear about what is happening around town and feel out of the loop. Children and youth do not connect with one another as often in person as they do on line. And people feel that there are deep divisions that are showing up in town politics.. . After doing research in the fall and early winter of 2014, the group reached out to a number of community leaders in town to talk about their findings and how we, as a community together, might address isolation. At first, the group partnered with another leader from the historic center of town - our public library. It was decided to call the group “The Heart of Bethany,” not only because it originated at the heart of the town’s historic district, but because the group addresses issues at the heart of what it means to be good, caring citizens and neighbors in community. . . This is the collaboration’s shared purpose:. . With a desire for a thriving and unified community, the Heart of Bethany is committed to deepening our town wide sense of place and belonging by inviting new connections through meaningful gatherings, shared resources and neighborly service.. . Although the project originated in Bethany’s churches, the Heart of Bethany is becoming a collaboration weaving together members of the many community organizations of Bethany. We have members from the parks and recreation department, the Bethany Community school and the Lion's Club in addition to the library and town churches. We come together as an economically, politically and religiously non-partisan group. We are guided by sensitivity and respect for others, and a desire to encourage nourishing community connections between us all. . . Our first projects have been centered around our town meeting process. Since every citizen has the opportunity through these meetings to connect and participate in our common life as a town, it has been our hope to invite and encourage as many residents as possible to take part in our common civic life at our town meeting. We have offered food and conversation before many of the town selectmen, finance and budget meetings leading up to our May 18 town meeting to encourage open communication and wider participation. We hosted a Storytelling event at the library with the theme “The Heart of Bethany,” and hope to host more story sharing events. We were present at the Memorial Day Parade, giving people Heart of Bethany car magnets and cold water. With the town meeting season drawing to a close, we are pondering new ways to bring people together and strengthen our common bonds of community in the future. Your participation is welcome!
