Detailed description is The Four Candles is a fully refurbished 16th Century Freehouse Pub & Restaurant which opened in May 2016. Call 01295 760593 to book your table. Originally “The Red Lion” pub in Moreton Pinkney for nearly 400 years, Roy & Samantha Murphy acquired the derelict shell of the formerly renamed “England’s Rose” pub (1996-2004) in August 2014. Having been structurally condemned and closed in 2004 due to serious subsidence and disrepair, this Grade II Listed building set within a protected conservation area had lay dormant, neglected and weather-beaten for over a decade.. . With development of new houses on the pub’s land, formally used as a dairy market, the renovation works began on the pub itself by righting the original dilapidated stone walls and making the building structurally safe. The building was underpinned and foundations were set under the failing old structure which originally had none at all. The crumbling rubble stone walls were excavated, pinned and reinforced with modern building materials to make a rigid abatement which maintained it’s original appearance and character. Steel reinforcing was added to areas where structural walls had been removed over the years and many original roof trusses and purlins dating back to the early 17th century had to be sympathetically replaced with green oak in accordance with strict conservation rules to protect its national heritage.. . The second part of the rebuild was to sympathetically extend the building to accommodate room for a large restaurant and commercial kitchen with much larger, modern washroom facilities and greatly improved access with the formation of a dedicated car park to the rear. The gardens to the Old Cottage next door, also belongs to the pub, were sacrificed in order to create better access and extra parking space.. . Once the pub was conserved and expansion works completed, it was time for “Project Phoenix” to breathe new life into the building, creating a modern pub and restaurant whilst retaining as much character as possible of the original. After huge re-investment, Moreton Pinkney has a pub it can be proud of once a again.. . Renamed “The Four Candles” by a village vote, this beautiful free-house was re-launched on 26 May 2016 after being closed for 12 years. After many, many months of hard work, Roy and Sam have finally completed construction and renovations and their restaurant launched six months after the pub opening on the 26th November 2016.
